  1. I picked up one the 6 volt version of this Browning flashligh two weeks ago (go to cabelas.com and look for item QR-516440 should be $31.99). I took this with me camping last week and found that it was extremly bright (the cabelas guys said it was brighter than similar surfire lights, and it was brighter than a relatives stream light polystinger (he is an EMT) rechargable light). Even though its only rated to last 1.5 hours, I was able to make one set of batteries last the entire week that I was camping. Several of my freinds were extremly impressed with how much light this flashlight produced, and a few took to calling it a "minture sun". Wyatt W.
  2. Well I made my simple converter, and it seems to work. It is pretty crud (made with a couple pieces of wire, an old CD, and some screws) but hopefully it will allow me to download my track data to my PDA at the end of the day. Now my only other problem is a program that saves track data with altitude. Edit: I solved my other problem with G7toCE (http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/ ). Sadly the current version does not want to play nice with my meridian, so I can't tell if they fixed the altitude problem since I last tried this program (but fortunately I can save the track files to the Meridian SD card, so I am in pretty good shape for my trip). Thank you every one that offered help. Wyatt W.
  3. I would buy one but it will not get here in time for my camping trip (and living where I am I have about 0% of a chance finding a garmin cable for a computer let alone my PDA). Wyatt W.
  4. Found the link from Joe and jacks website: http://gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/trackbacks.html Wyatt W.
  5. I was lookin to do this for data transfer only with my PDA (and I only have a magellan cable for the pda). So is the magellans data in/out pins basically setup the same as garmins (and if so are two of the garmin/magellan pins used for power, and two for data (or is there three))? Wyatt W.
  6. Do these units have a directional pad? The picture kind of makes it look as if there is not one (it looks like the biggest button on the unit is the GOTO button). Wyatt W.
  7. I just saw this today, they seem to be geared to the same crowd that would buy a Geko. http://www.magellangps.com/en/news/release...ease.asp?id=308 http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/explorist.asp (pictures) Wyatt W.
  8. Although the tracklogging abilities on Garmin units is pretty good, the backtrack function is horrible (and a joke). There use to be a page on Joe and Jacks website that showed the backtrack funtion and it's lack of following the actual path one took. I know the trackback function on my GPS V (v 2.50) is also severly lacking. There probably is nothing wrong with your unit. Wyatt W.
  9. Hi, I have a meridian cable for my Pocket PC. I am wondering if its possible to arrange something that can make the pin outs fit a Garmin GPS V (I am looking for something that I can just wires together without destroying the Magellan end). This will not be used for powering the unit, just for data transfer. I am looking to do this since I plan on taking my GPS units with me on a weeklong camping trip (starting Saturday, so I don't have time to order the correct cable). During this trip I would like to save the tracks from the GPS V to the PDA since I am extremely unhappy with the way Garmin saves the tracks internally. One other question, does any one know a program for Pocket PC that saves the track data with the altitude (I would really like to have the altitude since I will be hiking in some hills)? Wyatt W.
  10. The feature we are talking about is in the newest firmware version 5.12 (for gold/platnium). Wyatt W.
  11. Have you tried reloading the firmware? Wyatt W.
  12. I think it is based on a search that you did near another point (e.g. goto (nearest)- some feild (user waypoints, cities, highways...)- cities or other). It seems to only save three previous searches, so you could just replace those by looking up other places. Wyatt W.
  13. The pin outs are the same, so it should work (my 315 cable works with my meridian). The only problems you may incounter is the fit will not be quite right since the 315 cable is curved (but it should be good enough). If it is also a power cable you may run into some problems (it seems some of the 315 cables did not deliver enough power to run some of the newer units when the backlight it on (gray box units should be okay)). Wyatt W.
  14. The Magellan is also nicer in the regard that you can search for those items you listed (in my GPS V you can only look for cities, POI's, exits, intersections, addresses). On the Magellan units you can search for bodies of water, all POI's (airports, TOPO POI's, parks... this is not possible on Garmin units). And over all the magellan 16mb and 8-9mb (the 8-9mb basemaps have less shoreline detail than the 16mb version) basemaps are more detailed than their Garmin counter parts (and it seems that the 60's basemaps are even less detailed than the GPS V's). Wyatt W.
  15. USAphotomap is a free (donations welcomed) program that downloads aerial and topo maps. You can download tracks/waypoints/routes from most GPS units. You can download it from here: www.jdmcox.com . Wyatt W. (I am just a user of this program, I have nothing to do with its development)
  16. I don't use the compass on my Platnium that much, I probable would use it allot more if Magellan did not include the northfinder on all their GPSr (displays the sun and the moon on the compass screen, you then rotate that to match up with the sun or moon in the sky and it will point to north-after a while it becomes second nature to do this). I got use to use that feature on my 315, and still use it now with my Platnium (I think I prefer north finder over the compass). If my GPS V had the meridians compass in it I think I would probably use it allot. I remember that I was lost without the north finder (or a E-compass) on the GPS V and I kind of wondered how the Garmin people could stand not having that feature. Wyatt W.
  17. The diffrence between the meridian gold and marine is the color of the casing and the marine version has the marine basemap (same detail as the gold, but has an extra 1mb of marine POI's). Wyatt W.
  18. The term is called questing. They will climb as high up as 3 feet on tall grass stalks and cling at the very tip with their front legs projected outward in preparation to snag onto the first mammal that walks by. Thats what I have heard too. I also heard that allot of ticks are at the edges of a trail, and if your on a trail that is not wide enough to avoide touching the tall grass on either side, you may be better off walking off the trail. I know where I live ticks are a way of life, I can walk out into my back yard for just a couple of mins and come back in with a few ticks. And I do agree they seems specially bad this year. Wyatt W.
  19. I had the Magellan GPS315, and with the GPS loaded with Version 3.15, it was a very good GPS, and led me to the caches ok, but of course it didnt have mapping. The 315 behaves allot nicer with software version 3.15. Before that you had to walk 2-2.5 mph before it broke out of the averaging feature, with the newest version it is down to .5 miles (same as the meridian and sportracks). Wyatt W.
  20. In the past I had the meridian compass where it was off by 180 degress. It took a few advanced calibrations to get it to read right. Wyatt W.
  21. I have a screen protecter om my meridian, and I do think it is necessary to prevent scrathes when you have to clean the screen (I hate those stupid circular scratches that appeared on plastic screens). Wyatt W.
  22. Check to make sure you did not unseat the battery springs when you removed the batteries. Wyatt W.
  23. If you can get it real cheap ($15 or less), then it might be worth purchasing. Otherwise it is not really worth it since the program has not been updated for years. I also think your limited to the number of categories you can load to the 315 (e.g. you can load restraunts, hotels, golf cources and that may be it- not sure on the number but I am thinking 3 to 5). Wyatt W.
  24. Not really from the NE, but I am from Huron (finnaly got my first cache placed this weekend-its pretty simple though, but I guess you have to make do with what you have available). I have a Meridian Platnium, Magellan 315 (my oldest-4 years in June), and a GPS V (I also have gps add on for my Ipaq). Wyatt W.
  25. Not sure what you mean, Mapsend Direct Route is new and it uses Navtech data, just like Garmin and every other in car navigation system. They also said the plan to release a new version each year (it is on their FAQ on their site). Wyatt W. edit: capitlization of Mapsend Direct
