  1. You may also want to recompiling your regions on mapsend, there mighty be a bad spot in one of the regions (and if you used the same region on both SD cards that would explain the problems with both). I had a few cases where I got that message, and I recompiled the regions and that fixed the problem. Wyatt W.
  2. This could become a self-fulfilling myth (some one does it because they hear everyone saying that it mighty happen- or they don't like people saying it will never happen so they do it-there is no limit to some people, and they don’t think rationally like you people would like them too). It kind of like the legend of a woman micro waving her baby, eventually a woman did the exact thing because of the legend (I know this sounds like I making it up). Either way it is not going to stop me from finding them when I get the chance. Wyatt W.
  3. Well the direct route maps should be more accurate (well as accurate as mapoint-since most of thr data from mapoint is probably navtecq data too). You should also be able to find the software cheaper than $150 ($100 is pretty common, may find it for less). You may also want to wait a few mounths to see if Magellan releases a new version. Wyatt W.
  4. This was posted in the sci.geo.satellite- nav group. http://products.thalesnavigation.com/en/pr...asp?PRODID=1021 Looks like it is priced way out of range of most geocachers. some features: Sub-meter GPS Ready for RTCM real-time corrections Extremely rugged and waterproof Integrated Bluetooth wireless technology Full-color daylight readable display with touch panel Removable SD memory card Integrated alphanumeric keyboard with back light Removable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery Embedded Windows CE .NET Optimized for Mobile GIS applications Wyatt W.
  5. Turn the tracking off (menu (on map page)-maps setup- off) when your done mapping the trail, or before the unit gets a lock at your house. Wyatt W.
  6. It kind of depends on the program. A general rule is to have NMEA off if the program lets you select the type of GPS (easygps, magellan products, ozi), or NMEA v2.1 on for programs that don't let you select the type of GPS (USAphotomap for example). And usually set the baud rate to 4800 to start, and you can go up till it quite being reliable. I don't quite remember if it has to have a lock before it sends waypoints in NMEA mode, if so just turn the simualtor on if you can't get a lock. Wyatt W.
  7. I have a Compaq Ipaq 3955, and a Navman sleeve. I found I don't like to use it for navigation (either car, or specially outdoors), and much prefer a dedicated unit. To me trying to touch the touch screen while the car is bumping around is just too hard, and out doors the unit is unprotected (or becomes too balky when protected) But the nice part of the PDA is storage (more handy for all units that are not a Meridian-saves all data to SD card internally) of data from the GPSr (need a cable), or for pocket queries. Wyatt W.
  8. You can become a premium member and get pocket queries, and it covers the entire state (thats what I do) or what ever you search criteria may be. Or you can do what you have been doing by downloading each page, and open each of those in easyGPS and send each page to the GPSr (I use to do that, but pocket queries are allot easier). So did you quit using you Meridian Gold, and now only use the Etrex? Wyatt W.
  9. I have had a 315 for 4 years (its a back up unit know since I know have units that have mapping), its a pretty good unit as long as you have the newest firmware installed (3.15). I never had any problems with the unit and it has been fairly reliable, and seems to hold a lock as well as my platnium or GPS V. Wyatt W.
  10. So, what is this about? I have the Navman 3*** sleeve, and the Ipaq 3955. Love the Ipaq, not to crazy about the Navman (but I like that it can use CF cards-I use it more for that than I do a GPSr). The Navman just takes to long to get a fix, and not sure how well it holds it (had this over a year, and still have not fully tested it). I personally prefer to hook up my stand alone GPSr to my PDA. Wyatt W. Edit: spelling
  11. If you can read french (I can't) it is listed on that side of the site. Wyatt W. Edit: here is the french link http://www.lebaron.ca/pdf_fallfrench/outdoors/fnew_magel.pdf
  12. So are you kidding? If not, too bad about the battery. Wyatt W. edit: I bet the 400 model is similar to the 500 but it does not have teh ecompass and barometer.
  13. Of course, that only matters if you believe those figures; I use the EPE (Or garmins "accuracy" figure) mostly to judge how long someone has been using a GPSr. If you still want it, it's displayed on the position screen when the unit is not averaging If you have software version 4.06 or above there is an option in the setup menu to turn on power button guard. To shut the unit off you have to hit the power button, followed by the enter button in five seconds. Wyatt W.
  14. I got my CD yesturday (7-14-04), but have not decieded yet if I want to shell out the $75 for an update. I basically ordered it so I would have it incase I have to travel to larger cities and I needed the newest maps. Wyatt W.
  15. Here is a post from sci.geo.satellite-nav, posted by "bob" "Magellan Replied to my email: Hello! The eXplorist 100, 200, and 300 are 14 channel WAAS enable GPS receivers with a patch antenna. The 100 contains no basemap. The 200 and 300 contain a North American basemap. All three units are capable of saving 20 routes and 500 waypoints. The 100 is capable of saving 3 track log files. The 200 and 300 are capable of saving 5 track log files. The 300 will have a 2 axis compass and barometer. Aside from those differences the the rest of the specs are about the same. The battery life is 18 hours on two AA batteries. Waterproof standard is ipx7. The display backlight is a two level amber backlight. All three units do not support MapSend and are not capable of data transfers. Thank you for choosing Magellan Magellan Technical Support" Hopefully magellan uses a full size patch antenna, not the smaller ones found in Garmin's etrex units. I also wish that magellan would have used a 3 axis compass (like the platnium/ sportrack color) in the 300. Wyatt W.
  16. Only advantage the sportrack pros has is the size of the unit. Having the SD memory in the gold allows you to have multiple maps sets (consisting of the same map program or a mixture of programs e.g. topo and direct route), fast uploads of maps with a memory card reader/writer, basically unlimited waypoints/routes/tracks, and as many maps as your card can hold. Wyatt W.
  17. I liked houchers hide away, Theodore Rosevelt cache, and Spearfish Falls cache. But then again I have not done too many in the hills. Wyatt W.
  18. It is kind of funny how where debating whether a model that basically came out 3 years ago (as the gold) is better than another companies newest and greatest model. With that said, I do think the Garmin 60's screen is better than the meridians’ color screen. And it probably handles autoroutes better than the Magellan units (have to keep in mind the current models that auto route where never designed too). I personally have my doubts about a color screen on a unit that will be used outside most of the time. I have found in the past with other transflective screens that they do a pretty good job in direct sunlight and in areas when you can have the backlight on, but they get harder to see when the light source is not directly on the screen. Wyatt W. its late, I am tired, and I forgot what my point was.
  19. I think 5.34 (meridian color) and 5.35 (platnium/gold/marine) software versions are available on the yahoo meridian group. I uploaded 5.35 to my platnium a few days ago, and the only diffrence (I don't have directroute, so there may be some diffrence (e.g. handle multi turns better)) I noticed is the unit sorts waypoints faster and it displays address ranges when you do an address search. Wyatt W.
  20. I heard this a few times and in those cases, no one ever fixed it, so I will. The altitude that the Meridian displays on the position page (or in any customized fields) is GPS elevation (not barometer elevation if its a platinum, nor is it from the topo data). The only time you see the TOPO elevation is when your scrolling on the map page or using terrain/horizontal projections, and in any routes you have on the GPS (track profiles are GPS altitude based). The new Magellan’s SEEM to be lacking a port to connect to a computer, or plug into external power. Mapsend Direct route works on most of the newer meridian units except: the meridian green, sportrack yellow/map (not enough room on the sportrack map to justify the purchase of direct route), and the map 330. Wyatt W. Hmm... it seems to be past my bedtime. That would explain why I am so tired and cranky.
  21. I have heard that these units don't hook up to a computer (also the GPS store seems to support this). This seems like a major flaw. Wyatt W.
  22. This may be a crazy idea, but have you tried adjusting the contrast? Wyatt W.
  23. So what exactly are you looking for the software to do? I recently found G7toCE (free) that will store waypoints/routes/tracks. You can then save that data into several formats or upload it again to your GPSr. Wyatt W.
  24. The bigger basemap in the pro will contain more highways, parks, waterways, and most important more city name (you can only search names of cities that are in the basemap, even if you have detailed maps loaded). The bigger basemap in the meridian series contains better coastline detail when compared to the PROs' basemap. Wyatt W.
  25. You may also want to try the advanced calibration a couple of times (it might take 1 or more times to make it work). Advanced calibration is menu right-left-right-left (or until a box pops up with 00 in it). change that to 21 and hit enter and follow the directions. Wyatt W.
