  1. Perhaps everyone else has already figured this out. When you press the PWR button, you get a Magellan splash screen for a few seconds, then a Woodall's copyright screen for a few seconds, then the lawyer screen which requires you to press ENTER to continue. Waiting through the first two screens was a pain. I found out that you can press ENTER any time during those first two screens, and you'll move to the next. So, PWR then three ENTERs and you're cooking.

  2. I believe the problems relating to USB-serial adapters go back to the application (mapping)software you are using. Most older serial communications libraries relied on the fact that when a character arrived on the serial port, the port hardware raised an interrupt on a particular IRQ (interrupt request queue). As I recall, serial ports used IRQ 3 and 4 by default. The USB adapters will not trigger the hardware interrupt. Any software written lately uses Windows services instead of hardware interrupts. If your application can be configured to use serial ports greater than 4, it should work with the adapter.

  4. I'm just getting acquainted with my Meridian Platinum. It works fine with Streets and Trips 2002. The Meridians can output NMEA data in three different revisions, and at several different speeds. You'll need to set it to NMEA 2.0 and 4800 baud for most mapping software to be happy.

I also bought MapSend Topo for Meridian. It has all of the streets, as well as elevation stuff.

I questioned the value of the compass and altimeter in the Platinum, but now that I've used it, I like it a lot. Because you get direction info even when not moving, I can stop for a moment and let it get a solid location fix. Then just slowly turn until the desired point is straight ahead and walk the distance to the waypoint. As might be expected, however, the compass does not work well in the car.

  6. I live in Belton, MO and work in Overland Park. I've been away from the fun for a while, but my new Meridian just showed up. I downloaded all of the caches within 100 miles into the Meridian, so I expect to have lot of fun!

Good to see the local area perk up.

  7. I've owned a 310 for a year or so. It's primarily used with Streets and Trips on my laptop. I just received my Meridian Platinum, and it's fantastic. It's going to take some time to learn the features, but I've already uploaded all of my local caches to it as waypoints.
