  1. Challenges are more incentive for me to get out there and do more caching, even though I've only completed/signed logs on two of them. If I'm a far way from home and there's a challenge I know I can complete, I'll sign the log ahead of time. To me though the final is usually a reward for the achievement.
  2. Do you really think that the majority of those who log caches abroad do know the local language well enough to bring all this across properly? I do not think so. I use to write all logs in English, but I would not dare to say that I can transport the emotions in all cases in a way that is unambigious and cannot be misunderstood in the context of a different culture. What you want to get is fairly (to put it polite and not to say too) ambitious. I actually agree with what you're saying, left out probably the most important part. Most cachers brings something unique to the cache, whether it's a swag item or a story, it's their mark on the cache. There should be no problem with someone expressing themselves the best they can. I'll take a log written in Japanese WWII ciphers over a simple "TFTC" anyday lol.
  3. Even if the log was in Spanish, French, or something else, if you tried to translate it the text itself would lose meaning. Some words don't mesh between two languages, at best you'd get 90% of what the cacher was trying to say and barely any of the emotion from their log. Translations are like playing that old telephone game: you lose part of the message as it's passed along.
  4. What's even worse than this is "discovered it = stole it". Can't blame the intro app cachers because it seems these trackable items go missing in caches where recent finders were experienced. Don't know why people feel the need to keep trackable items. What good is a small trinket or keychain going to do for you? Just something accumulate in the junk drawer? I could see people wanting to keep the geocoins, I would never release mine into the wild. Regular TBs going missing so frequently just puzzles me. Of course this has been discussed for ages. Armchair logging on trackables though? Weak.
  5. I judge it based on the difficulty of the puzzle, in my opinion. If the hide is also difficult I usually up the rating one star and the terrain is solely based on the final.
  6. These caches can be good for those in wheelchairs, but what's wrong with having gap fillers for those that like the numbers aspect? The best part about this game is that it has a little something for everyone. One man's trash is another man's treasure. One man's favorite point'd cache is on another's ignored list.
  7. To me it seems like a chain reaction. Lots of small children out there caching and getting a prize for finding it is the incentive for them. The adult doesn't leave anything typically because "what's the big deal if one item is missing?" Well if everyone takes that approach, there will be nothing left in the caches. Personally I don't take anything out of a cache unless it's a trackable item and I know I can move it. Small toys serve no purpose to me except for dropping them into another cache on a future date.
  8. Can the possibility of time travel be ruled out?
  9. Found it = Found it twice. We had a one cacher in the area host events all the time with "bonus" caches to find. They were never publish, just little extra containers to go out in find, but you were allowed to log them on your profile. So they ended up with anywhere from one to 20 finds on a single event cache.
  10. I was at a puzzle cache final last week and since I hadn't updated my GPSr in a few weeks, didn't see the last log that there were wasps near the cache. Lifted the skirt up and here they come. Avoided being stung but I'm always very wary of stinging insects. Best way to make sure they're not around is to check the recent logs. If the cache has been found within, I'll say at the most a week, then you should be good to go. In the case a few stragglers are just starting to build their nest, listen for buzzing or like others have said tap on the skirt a few times and then step back. Sadly on these wasp caches someone has to discover them, that's one kind of FTF that you don't want lol.
  11. I'm curious as to why the people bringing up bomb scares with geocaches and defending Munzee are here considering these forums are for Geocaching.... Anyways, just ignore the stickers. I see them all the time on signs when I'm not out caching and then all over trails when I am caching. They're easier to place than a cache and don't require as much effort. I'm a numbers guy, not a big fan of Munzee, but other numbers guys like me may enjoy it. Certainly this activity is easier than caching. This isn't much different than a LPC or GRC. In one sentence: ignore the stickers, nobody is forcing you to find them.
  12. Generally the purpose of an archival is to put to rest caches that are missing with an AWOL CO, on private property, or for any other reason that would keep away cachers from trying to locate the container. Sometimes there are archived caches still out there but it's best just to focus on the active ones.
  13. Considering that a GeoCoin is a type of trackable with the primary purpose of belonging to it's owner or traveling as much as possible, I don't like it. Traveling around the internet isn't really much of a journey. However, going to a cache and finding a coin that's been across the world? That's interesting. This just seems like something to boost trackable numbers. It's better to keep the game physical rather than armchair logging a bunch of trackables.
  14. Nope never signed the log, didn't solve the puzzle either unless he was extremely lucky since the puzzle was useless. I'll have to delete it.
  15. This is one of my personal favorites from a little over a year ago. I went to a cemetery cache placed by X (not the guy's name, just protecting the identity) and since he had neglected to install a new log sheet I went ahead and put a new one in for him. An hour later my log is deleted with no explanation. I emailed him, no response. Two weeks later a puzzle cache I publish had a major flaw that I didn't catch which led to archival. X still claims a find: Again no email even asking for permission. Didn't even solve the puzzle. Still wondering if I should delete the log.
  16. I believe this extends outside of this game but today's world has too many people with a false sense of entitlement. Whatever happened to "this land is your land, this land is my land"? Now everyone is worried about protecting their land. Most of the time these people don't even own the land. Instead, they want to be vigilantes. Ever read any of those stories about the police investigating caches that were reported? I'm sure most of you have, almost always the person who reported it does most of the talking. In fact you can find up to five quotes from those people. They want to be the hero for their 15 minutes of fame when in reality they are just wasting the time of our resources that could be saving someone's life. Sadly most people just lack common sense when placing caches. Don't put a cache on a guard rail on the side of a busy road with limited parking space. Don't place a cache five yards from someone's mailbox in a tree that's on the border of their property unless you get permission. If there's any chance for controversy, play it safe. Won't completely eliminate the nasty muggle but it'll certainly improve the game's reputation.
  17. Wouldn't things be pretty boring if you found the cache every time? The satisfaction of finding a cache after I've DNF'd it at least once increases dramatically.
  18. I came across a magnetic sign at a park, it was on a utility box in plain sight, but blended in perfectly. You can buy these on eBay, or make them at home. Just take a magnet that you want to use and tape the log sheet on the back. Maybe check out some of those lesser known cache container online stores. Geocaching.com doesn't sell them, but I'm sure you can find another site that does.
  19. If you have a coin that near and dear to your heart, don't put it in a geocache for someone else to take! I would never put my Geo-Achievement coins in a cache, I just share them at events with others. Besides, I'm finding that there are more experienced cachers stealing trackables/coins than newbies not logging/accidentally keeping trackables/coins.
  20. I'm brainstorming ideas for a cool tribute cache to honor another cacher who is going to complete a unique challenge. So I thought I'd make a forum and ask what are some of the cooler tribute caches you've seen? Personally, I haven't found that many, but I'd like to make something special.
  21. An Africanized honey bee, about the size of my thumb. It was sitting on top of a container in a Michigan rest stop. My dad and I tried to get it to move, but that thing held it's ground. I just took my DNF and moved on.
  22. 1. People who send mean emails because you requested maintenance on a couple of caches 2. Wasp nests, spider webs, or any kind of animal/habitat under a lamp skirt 3. Any cache that turns into a field day for the bomb squad 4. Garbage covering GZ, might as well go dumpster diving 5. Event stackers or multiple attended logs on an event by the same person
  23. What part of Ohio are you going to be caching in? I know of a several really cool caches around the state.
  24. Mine is a tribute to my favorite football team. If you follow the NFL, you'll understand the reference. If you don't follow the NFL, google "Ndamukong Suh stomp" and everything will be clear
  25. I have nine caches placed: eight puzzles and one traditional. My puzzles are meant to be challenging and a couple of them of are meant to be very difficult while some reward you with a larger sized cache. I love puzzles caches, they've made me a couple of friends and it's a great way to challenge myself or kill time. The traditional is at a former golf range converted to a park and it's one of my favorite places to take my dogs. It's a neat little spot you probably wouldn't go to unless you were a cacher or were looking for a spot to walk your dog. Plus the container is very unique.
