  1. It could be that you both do not have the same settings for routing .... or like Koikeeper and myself (with identical 60C units) they each have a mind of their own and more often than not they are different. This past weekend they differed by as much as 130 feet at times .... but as we got closer to the cache the differences became smaller. Each unit got a little different "bounce" off the surrounding terrain. When we autoroute to a cache they sometimes pick different routes even with the same settings for routing. ImpalaBob
  2. Based on the N.H. proposal for banning caches ... Bring back virtuals for those locations not allowing cache containers. ImpalaBob
  3. February 11th, 2007. Congratulations to my wife Koikeeper for getting to 1500. Koikeeper did her first cache March 20th 2005 while under the watchful eye of "The Caching Nuts" at a SEPAG geo-teaching event. Her passion and persistance have never wavered during the past 2 years! Although we are considered a "team", the true geo-passion lies with her. I'm glad she found something she loves to do. Our next goal is to reach 2000! Thanks to SEPAG, Lehigh Valley Geocachers, and all our geo-friends who have helped us along the way. ImpalaBob
  4. Traditional cache = Add new log and let owner do maintenance. Micro = Replace log sheet and contact owner as to if he wants it mailed to him or thrown out. I have replaced numerous nano logs when I found them full. Majority of owners just thank me and tell me to throw out the old log sheet. I would say "Use common sense!", but I feel it is not being taught any more. ImpalaBob
  5. loc and gpx files are simple text files and can be opened with Notepad or any text editor. ImpalaBob
  6. I definitly remove items that I feel do not belong in a cache .... based on our guidelines. I remove broken and trashy items. Koikeeper and I do constant maintenance on our caches trying to keep them clean. I would have no problem with someone removing junk from our caches! We routinely re-stock our swag. If a cache is packed ..... I often remove the major offending item and re-place it in another deserving cache. Thank you for doing the same! ImpalaBob
  7. WAAS is a pilot thing that helps improve the accuracy when using a GPS for piloting an aircraft. It can only help a ground based GPS. As said .... backlighting is the biggest energy hog. Koikeeper and I have recently switched to Eneloop rechargeable NiMh from Sanyo and are very pleased with them. They do not have as high a milliamp hr rating but hold there charges CONSIDERABLY better than other rechargeables (PowerEx)we have used. We bought ours at Circuit City. ImpalaBob
  8. Frankly ..... The 60CSX does a a lot of stuff very well ... but storing enough data to go paperless is not one of them. Get a cheap PDA and the Cachemate program along with a Premium membership so you can do pocket queries.
  9. Got to topozone.com and check some out in your area. ImpalaBob
  10. Some Info: A gpx file contains ALL the important info on a cache page. A loc file contains the cache name and coordinates. Any member can download a loc file. Both files are text files and can be opened with any text editor such as "Notepad" and viewed. ImpalaBob
  11. The ones you found should have a red check mark in front of them. By becoming a Premium Member you can use pocket queries and get results that filter out your found caches. ImpalaBob
  12. Yeah! Tell that to all the geo Wart Hogs that tear up the cache location looking for it. Put a micro in the woods and I guarantee that it will get torn up. ImpalaBob
  13. Your GPS is the least reliable when standing still. Movement lets the GPS calculate its position and direction of movement giving accurate readings. ImpalaBob
  14. At least when you have a "Members Only" cache you can look at the audit log and see who has been looking at your cache. Never list the cache contents and do not let anyone log info about the contents .... that way it is always a suprise to the finder. Image courtesy of JMBella ImpalaBob
  15. I am really liking the Sanyo Eneloop batteries! They claim to hold 90% of their charge for a year! We bought ours at Circuit City. 1000 recharges @ once per week = 19 years of use. ImpalaBob
  16. I would first say that anything you do to help the geocaching community is never a disservice! None of us like to go looking for a cache that is not there!!!!! Log a "needs maintenance" first. NO RESPONSE within 2 weeks .... Log a "SBA" (Should Be Archived). Once archived put out your own new cache if you think the area warrants a cache. ImpalaBob
  17. Thanks Alphawolf!!! I'll try the National Geographic paper ASAP. I'd say look at the package and see if it says "use lazer jet". I stand corrected. ImpalaBob
  18. No matter what waterproof paper you purchase (I use Xerox brand bought at Staples) , you need to remember that they only work with lazer printers!!!! Your inkjet will run and smear when you print on waterproof paper. I print on plain paper and then take it to work and use the lazer jet to copy on to the waterproof paper. ImpalaBob
  19. "3) When you select found, have it display the time and date. I can never remember the date when I'm filling out a cache log." When you select found it makes an automatic entry in your units calander page! We use a seperate Palm PDA. ROT13 conversion, brail convertor, morse code, and add more deciphering help files as we come across them! Good topic! ImpalaBob
  20. Archholes And Elbows by Team Skadog (GCXV08) This cache is not for everyone!!!! But having completed it; all I can say is it is an adventure that will take you places that you thought you would never go! ImpalaBob
  21. Garmin 60CSX does not have the ability to hold all that great extra data that the PDAs / PPCs will hold. What it will get you is ultra fast Sat lock and better reception under cover .... and being able to handle outdoor environments.
  22. We usually go to the nearest Library. Even when they are closed it works in the parking lot! ImpalaBob
  23. Castanea gives good advice!!!! Koikeeper and I have been using Garmin Map60C units for caching and driving for almost 2 years. The new "x" series are better than ours because they can hold more maps or all the maps depending on the size of the replaceable memory chip, and get faster / better Sat reception. If driving direction is the priority item ..... then units that give voice commands while driving may be a more appropriate choice. Garmin NUVI or IQ3600? ImpalaBob
  24. You can delete waypoints by symbol ..... and choose the open treasure chest symbol .... to get rid of your found cache icons. It is a good idea to wipe the slate clean on a regular basis so you are not trying to find a cache that has been archived or disabled. If you get hooked you will want to use pocket queries, Cachemate / GSAK, or other tools that make caching easier. Logging ..... There is a tool called "Express logger" that you could do a search on. I am not familiar with it enough to help you. We enter our finds in our PDA and sit and log them one at a time. ImpalaBob
