  1. Your safey is your responsibility. Always. It is never on the CO or the reviewer. It is only the CO's responsibility to maintain the cache and the accociated listing. The reviewer is responsible for making sure the cache complies with the guidelines and that the cache is kept maintained. If a cache has a maintenance issue and a reviewer needs to get involved a warning must be the first communication. It's only fair to give the CO a chance to rectify the situation. Think of it this way. If I got hurt at one of your caches, would you take responsibility for it? Would you be happy to have legal proceedings against you if it was serious enough? Or would you consider it my own fault because I am responsible for my own safety? If a landowner finds a cache on their land that they don't want to be there. I am not. I was stating that the concerns you raised were comparable. You seem to want a reviewer to review for safety. We can never do that and will never do that. It is not our responsibility It is always the responsibility of the finder. If you don't feel safe doing a cache you walk away. In situations like this one you express your concerns. If the CO does nothing you get a reviewer involved and they do what is necessary. All of which has happened in this situation. If the reviewer was ignoring the situation then that would be an issue to raise. As I have said, we have to give the CO a chance to rectify the situation. There may be other places a cache can go that are safer. They have the option to move them. They can't do that if we archive them. If we get no response, then the cache will be archived. Either way the problem is solved.
  2. None of the above is anything to to with a reviewer or the CO. It's all on the finder to decide where they go caching and if they should attempt a cache when they get to GZ. The CO and the reviewers are not responsible for your safety and never have been. All the concerns stated above can be applied to caches where you have to climb a tree but we'd never take action against such a cache. These caches are disabled with a note from the reviewer to give the CO a chance to respond and rectify the situation. If there is no response from the CO the reviewer will archve them. There are very few cases where we would archive without warning. This CO is being treated the same way as everyone else. Please be patient and the situation will be resolved. 3. Hi Welcome to the game. It's great that you want to place your own caches. However, you should familiarise yourself with the guidelines. We don't allow food in cache containers If you have any more questions, please don hesitate to post in the forums, Facebook groups or email your friendly local reviewer. 4. You are quite correct, this is a UK and Ireland sub forum on an American run website that is used globally. Anyone can post in any forum they like and reply to any posts they like. No-one is interfering. I don't quite know what you are referring to but if someone (say a reviewer from outside the UK & IE team or a Lackey) responds to a question in this forum, that's not interfering. I am now locking this thread as it serves no purpose to the community to have it continue.
  5. I've had a coupe of reports showing concern about the post from La Lunatica and the subsequent post from Simply Paul The concerns are that this appears to show a change from the original announcement and that it could be misleading. All that has been said is that we have come up with these clarifications on the existing guidelines and that as they are still guidelines we are flexible. I would hope that people can see that Simply Paul's post was, as he said, a suggested edit and not an official re-write.
  6. Hi Will I live in Bournemouth and I'd be happy to meet up for some caching shenanigans. If you use Facebook, there is a group for Dorset based cachers.
  7. I'm going to close this thread. Puzzle hints should be in private, not in a public forum.
  8. Moved back to the Geocaching Topics forum

  10. The answer to your question is B and no it's not a crock. You're obviously misunderstanding the facts here. Just because the GAGB have negotiated land agreements does not mean that we take orders from them. It is not part of Groundspeak's (or any other listing service) remit to negotiate land agreements. That is up to the community. You are taking exception to an organisation that has done that on our behalf without being asked to do so. I'm not saying this means you should support them or agree with anything else they may do. But just think how many of those agreements would not have existed without them because the vast majority of the community expects someone else to do it. Yes, they've made mistakes but so does any such body. So in conclusion. The GAGB have no power over any listing service. If you don't agree with them negotiating land agreements, please feel free to do it yourself as others have done. There's nothing to stop you doing it and I bet the GAGB would be grateful for someone else taking on some of the work. 11. Hi Can we all just calm down please? Anyway, I'm going to clarify a couple of points once and for all. The GAGB do not dictate any policy to us as Groundspeak reviewers. They have negotiated land agreements and have a list of places we can't cache. These are landowner decisions, not GAGB decisions, and we as cachers have to abide by them no matter what listing service we use. Let's go back to having a friendly discussion. 13. HH Bans may start with an issue being raised to GS by a reviewer but that is where our involvement (and knowledge) ends. We can't give you the answer you seek but the guys monitoring contact@geocaching.com will be the best people to ask. 14. See this post from Miss Jenn This is the situation in this case. Paul Geohatter Volunteer UK Reviewer & Forum Mod - geocaching.com UK Geocaching Information & Resources http://www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk Geocaching.com Knowledge Books http://support.Groundspeak.com//index.php
  15. You are right, temporary caches are not allowed. I have contacted to CO to make them aware of the guideline that this cache violates and that had I known their plan for it I would not have published it. 16. Not sure how many cachers from that area use this forum but you can try their local forum http://www.wmcaching.co.uk
  17. You will notice that I have now published the series after Groundspeak reversed my decision on Thursday. Sorry it took me til this morning to publish it but as Deci informed you I have had trouble with my internet connection so I didn't get the email until today. You appear to be citing precedent but since there is no precedent for cache setting, the decision had to be made by Groundspeak. Thank you for following the proper procedure and going to Groundspeak to make your case. Not a lot of people do that. 18. Yes we do use common sense. Have you considered that the land the car park is on might be owned by the same landowner as the SSSI??? This could be why the Magic map indicates it as such. The landowner will not be happy if we publicise that location as a cache and they haven't given permission. 19. Spot on. I wasn't about to make it easier by giving away their gender (whichever that may be).
  20. Good evening. As some of you have noticed there is a new moderator called castagnari. I have recruited this person to help on the forum as my reviewing duties are taking up a lot more of my time and to reduce the time lag when I get reports while I'm at work. It also makes sense that my counterpart is based in the UK. mtn-man does a good job when I need him to but he's based in the states and has other volunteer duties. I hope you will be gentle with them while I get them up to speed. In the meantime, let the guessing games begin. Paul geohatter
  21. Hi all The requirement to have an open to all element as part of a 'camping event' goes back a few years when the reviewers at the time had a massive complaint from someone who lived a few minutes from the campsite but was denied attendance because, quite rightly, they were unwilling to camp. There is no such thing as a camping event as far as Groundspeak is concerned. There are only events at campsites. As they are event caches you cannot compare them to regular caches that have specific requirements such as scuba diving. Events are the social aspect of the hobby and excluding people just because they won't/can't camp is just not on. There are plenty of camping events that manange to comply with this with no complaints from the organisers. I have my own annual camping event but I set aside 2 hours from the whole weekend for a bbq/drinks. That's all it takes. Just an hour or two. You don't even have to do anything special. You could all just be drinking round the camp fire as long as there is a set time. No effort involved there. This is the current position of the reviewers as representatives of Groundspeak. The only way it will change is if TPTB tell us to. If you want to effect a change please use the feedback site and get the votes in for your idea. They will seriously consider it. I just can't guarantee the outcome.
