  1. PQs are data. Bookmarks are just pointers to cache pages. Apples and Oranges. So you are saying that I can own an Apple but not and Orange. The end result of Apples and Oranges are the same, to end up with a list of geocaches. Does it matter whether they are carmel on a stick, sliced and baked in a pie, dipped in chocolate, or mixed with vodka. They both will be consumed if allowed by the owner of the tree. Huh, what was that all about. Anyway, do you get my confusion. I'm just saying if someone wants to share their favorite PQ with me, what is the problem? Actually, it's more that you can own your apples (PQs), but not share them with others. And you can show people pictures of your apples (bookmarks) which they can use to order their own apples. Groundspeak is the owner of the PQs and licenses the access to you for your personal use. You just can't get your PQs, slap some caramel on them and pass them out to the kids down the street. KK, that is the best yet. I am just about in tears here LMFAO!!!

  3. Bookmarks can be shared easily, Edit the book mark and check the box that says I want to share. After that, anyone can click on the bookmark tab on your profile and there is an option for that person to build a PQ off of your BM or they can just look at the list directly. So once you put together the BM, anyone can download it. If you also click the make public check box then a link to the BM will show up on every cache page thats listed in the BM. I won't touch the issue of sharing or posting PQ's and addressing that the data really belongs to the cache owner and gc is just a listing service. This BM option is a nice solution with the exception of public use BMs are not consolidated and listed in one place. Would it not be convenient to be able to query BMs in a region or theme or other criteria, similar to the way routes are listed and open to user perusal. Naturally a user/owner would have to give permission to view and dl their BM listing by posting.
  4. Cache data does belong to the cache owner, period, at one time GS did acknowledge this in the TOU and I believe they still do. The cache owner "grants GS a license to list/distribute the info" (I'm not looking right now so may not be exact wording of the TOU, but you get the gist). A BM is simply a list of caches, nothing more, really nothing to copyright or control. A PQ is actual cache info (not just a list of caches, but also their description, coords, etc). This is an original work of the cache owner (and by copyright law, their info to control as they see fit). When you submit a cache, you "grant GS a license to list/distribute", your not giving up your ownership rights. As a side note, GS would have serious liability issues if they claimed copyright to the cache info, after all, if its theirs, any problems related to it (think bomb squad, and the fact that most are now charging for false calls) is also their problem, as a "listing service", its not their problem (think google, just because it lists bomb creation instructions doesn't make google liable if someone uses those instructions). GS never claims copyright, they just claim control over distribution of the data, as granted by the original cache owner in exchange for accepting the listing. GS is strictly a listing service, beyond the layout of their pages and original software they have written to support the site, there is nothing for GS to copyright. They can't claim copyright on something they didn't originally produce or where copyright wasn't specifically assigned to them. Well, that was quit a mouthful PF. Thanks, that answered a lot of my questions. I really appreciate your taking time to fill me in. I have more questions but perhaps I have run this topic into the ground.

Mmmm, how does a PQ belong to an owner and a Bookmark does not. It seems to me that both are owned by GS and would be restricted to their TOU. Both are created and used by an end user, just Bookmarks can be shared and PQs can not. Just looking for the logic in that design.
  6. Did I miss section of TOU where it allows for sharing PQ data between Colorados or Oregon. I saw where is specifically prohibits electronic reproduction. When the Colorado was released this came up and how it violated the TOU and TPTB are allowing the data exchange between the GPSr unit's. Interesting, would you know where this permission is documented?

  8. I would not intend to violate TOU, however if a user is already able to view another users Bookmarks and create a PQ of them, then why not allow paying PMs to post or exchange PQs by region, category, or other criteria. Seems it would make for less processing strain on the system. I could completely ignorant of some other issues here, just thinking allowed and "what if'ing".
  9. Is anyone aware of a method to share or post PQs and BMs for other users? A mass listing by regions would be nice and would be helpful in event like PQ server crash like last few days.
  10. Thanks Elias and GS for your expedient response.
  11. Rebooting, that is so funny. My IT department says that the first thing when we call from in the field. Did you Reboot? Don't even call us unless you Rebooted. If you call us and you did not Reboot, we will not service you until the next business day. Soooo funny. Perhaps the GC.com end users should have the option to Reboot GS.
  12. GS is obviously experiencing some PQ data server issues. Hopeful these will be resolved soon . I have been having PQ retrieval problems for a couple of days . If I run a single PQ it will run fine , however more than one will not run . I generally run all five a once, once a month.
  13. Same here, only I have been experiencing this PQ issue for several days now. I believe there is a load issue with the PQ system. GS should check this out.
  14. Well, Well, Well, what do I know. There it is. Thanks for the tip.
  15. Has thought ever been given to creating a link to MS Outlook Calender from a geocache event listing page? You may have seen this app with hotel and airline reservation sites. I think this ability would be very helpful and cool. tdl&claire
  16. The feature you request used to be available on GC.com at the top right of the listing page. I have noticed over the last year or so this function has disappeared. Bummer, I found it very handy.
  17. GR8, are you using the GE KML network plug in. If it is installed, just drag the view to your desired area and it will show push pins, up to 500, on the satellite image.
  18. I've had a Blackberry Curve with GPS for about two months now. I can't imaging geocaching without it now. I do not carry my Vista or my Palm anymore. The resolution and accuracy of my Blackberry GPS is every bit as good as my Vista was. I use the Trimble app on ATT service with an unlimited data plan. Everything is under 90.00 a month. The Trimble app is awesome and being able to log and upload photos from the cache site is very cool. The Trimble folks were very helpful and walked me through all the set up and configuration. I did find that the phone battery life is greatly increased if the GPS function is turned off when not in use. The first couple of days I forgot to do this and my phone was going dead every day. Now, even with a couple of hours a day GPS use, my phone will stay adequately charged for 4 to 5 days.
  19. Rich, thanks for the great reply. I think you have answered all my questions regarding smartphone caching. I have only one more question. I am going to purchase a smartphone this week, either with my existing ATT service or change to Sprint. If you were making this decision, which phone model would you go with, what service provider apps to I need to purchase and do you have a preference of ATT vs Sprint. I guess that was three questions. Thanks, Tom Tom, both Sprint and AT&T generally carry the same Blackberry models including the Pearl, Curve (soon for Sprint) and the enterprise 8820 (AT&T) or 8830 (Sprint) unit. AT&T uses a wireless network technology called GSM while Sprint uses a technology called CDMA. So while the Blackberry units look the same they are very different inside. This difference also extends to the GPS chips. The GSM units use the SiRF StarIII GPS chips (same as most new conventional GPSr's). The CDMA units use a GPS chip from Qualcomm. The SiRF chip performs better in my opinion. So my personal favorite Blackberry is the AT&T Curve and I use this phone with all of the Trimble applications. The AT&T Pearl or 8820 work just as well (GPS wise) but I have found the battery life on the Pearl and the Curve to be better than the 8820. So, if I were making a new Blackberry purchase and wished to use Geocache Navigator I would buy the 8110 Pearl or the 8310 Curve on AT&T (or another GSM carrier). You do not buy the Geocache Navigator application from AT&T though. Instead you can buy it from a Trimble partner called Handmark. You can purchase directly from your new Blackberry or on the web. All of this info is on Trimble's web site here: Geocache Navigator Info Trimble is offering a free 30 day trial though so try that first before you buy. Furthermore, if you end up buying and annual Geocache Navigator subscription ($39.99 per year) Trimble has been "known" to provide the Trimble Outdoors waypoint navigation Blackberry software and the Trimble Adventure Planner PC mapping software to Geocache Navigator users for free. This software is very helpful if you hike, backpack, boat, etc... I use it a lot for outdoor fun. Hope that helps and let us know how it goes - Rich at Trimble Well all, it has been almost three weeks since purchase of my BB Curve and install of the Trimble app. All I can say is "what the heck took so long"? I have had nothing but extreme satisfaction with my new setup and now can't imagine being on the road with out it. The GPS function is every bit as good as my Vista and the onsite logging features of GPS Navigator are outstanding. Thanks to Rich and Rebecca at Trimble for your patience, coaching and advice with my purchasing decision.
  20. Nope, I don't that is the issue. My last find log was 3 days ago and I ran the PQ this afternoon. My last find does show in the PQ. It's not that big a deal. I was just wondering about the discrepancy.
  21. One of you finds may be logged more then once by you Mmmmm, that is interesting. I will look into this. I wonder if the "system" differentiates find logs from notes posted. I would want to hope the "system" is that intelligent. Also I would think that it would only gather one find log per cache. Thanks for the feedback.
  22. Can someone tell me why the number of caches returned in the default GC.com My Finds PQ does not match the number of finds listed on my profile. My profile list 900 finds, but my PQ results only show 899.

  24. So many choices. I ran into someone with a Blackjack II. They really like it, but are not using the GPS function. It does have a data package and is less than a third the Blackberry price. I will give the BJ II a look. I did find it for around 50.00. Even without the GPS function, it is cheaper for internet access.
  25. The Trimble website doesn't even mention AT&T as a carrier option (under the purchase section).... I spoke to Rebecca at Trimble and they do support the Blackberry 8310 and 8820 through AT&T. I am still not sure the Blackberry uses real GPS technology or Cell Tower signals. I am researching the Blackberry manuals now. Found this link from Trimble on how the GPS and Cell Phone work together on the Blackberry at least. A bit tech and geeky. May be the same with other units: http://www.gpsworld.com/gpsworld/article/a...p;sk=&date=
