  1. Hi again! Thanks for replying. Another cacher on the forum was kind enough to help fix my mangled German writing, so I'm set!
  2. Thank you SO much! Confirming my belief that most geocachers are pretty darn awesome.
  3. Hello! I have been working on an earthcache for a site in Switzerland, and finished writing the description in English. Because the cache page also needs the description in the local language, I used Google Translate, but I have a feeling it doesn't sound quite right to German speakers? I imagine it sounds like the bad kung fu movie voiceovers I used to watch. Here is a sample: I posted on the General Geocaching forum, but thought I might try here, too. My mom's German is conversational more than written, so she can't help much, unfortunately. I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to edit/clean up my German Google-translation so it at least won't make the German reader laugh too hard? And as a token of my appreciation, I can send you a new unactivated trackable! (Since I can't send a pint of beer or a California fish taco, I hope this is just as fun.) Danke, -tvchick.

  5. Thank you for the tip! I am actually in Rome now, so I hope I will get to the one at villa borghese! And if I go, I hope I find it... I've already had two Dnfs on our night walk! All the muggles make me nervous, I guess. Yup, that's what I'm blaming it on! :\
  6. Greetings! I am planning to travel through Italy and have a bunch of trackables I hope to drop off. Does anyone know of good travelbug hotels in the area?
  7. (That's Coachella as in the over-hyped-but-I-still-love-it music festival.) I don't know if this is even possible, but I thought it would be interesting to see if I could combine my geocaching hobby with my music addiction hobby. I'm sure it would be crazy to try do a brief event in that mass of people. Finding each other would be a D3 on a T1, or T1.5 if there's lots of litter everywhere, T2 if mudpools happen. My random idea for the day.
  8. Okay, I am very happy with my app, which gave me the opportunity to use the iTunes giftcard I thought I'd have to re-gift. (I'm an amazon mp3 kind of girl.) So here's my top 5 list for Why the iPhone app was worth the $10 to me: 1. Map search feature PRO: Insanely better map than the free demo app. I can stand in one place and see the 25 closest caches to me all in one screen. Compare to free app: three max. (I think. It's been a while.) I can use that same map screen to go after all of those based on location without necessarily having to load each one individually. CON: Too easy to use means you spend your lunch breaks finding caches instead of eating, which means you wolf down M&M's at your desk an hour later. Also, you sometimes cache at happy hour, which leads to the unstealthiest caching ever. 2. Text message integration PRO: New cache posts. I get a text. I click on link. App shows me where and how far away I am. CON: You post so many FTF's that local cachers make voodoo dolls with your name on them, which could explain that weird tingling you get in your left foot sometimes. 3. Advanced search options PRO: Some days you feel unknown. Other days you're more traditional. And sometimes I want to find caches that have the word Beatles in their title, because I love those (yeah yeah yeah). I can filter the map search to show me only what I want to. CON: With great power comes great responsibility. 4. PQ's PRO: Pocket queries for the discriminating geocacher. You can download and save PQ's to your phone, which are useful if there's a specific batch or trail of caches you want to get but can't be sure if you'll have great coverage out there. I use this when I travel. All the puzzle caches in Hawaii? I saved them right here. Is that a query in your pocket or... CON: Leads to unfortunate pocket query joke. 5. Loggability PRO: If you don't want to wait til you get to a computer to post your log, you can app it. Or you can post a field note that saves a draft on the site until you get home to do it. Useful when you do twenty caches in a day but can't remember which one you left the geocoin or gold bar in. CON: Autocorrect always turns my "muggles" into "muffles" and "trackables" into "trackballs." Which leads to regrettable post where you proclaim your love for grabbing trackballs. I can probably think of more when I get a chance, but it's happy hour and I've got to go grab a drink to help numb this weird pinching pain I have in my back... -tvchick
  9. Greetings, fellow cachers! Just looking through the caches on the Big Island and wondering if anyone had caches they particulary recommend? Also, any good TB hotels? I come bearing trackable gifts from the mainland. thanks! -tvchick
  10. I've never left a throw-down before, unless the two times I lost a container and replaced it count. (One fell off a cliff, the other was eaten by a booger. Seriously!) I thought I'd try to be creative and do both the CO's requested logging method while bringing a cache container with an actual log. So I had my crafty crafting person construct (build? smelt? I don't know the term) a small stone a bit smaller than a tiny egg but with a hollow that fit a plastic container that fit a log. Sort of micro sized. I thought since the previous film containers had been muggled so often, maybe some better camo might work better. And if nobody wanted to sign it, well, it still just looked like another rock in the pile. I didn't realize this would be considered unethical by geo-standards, and I apologize if the idea was. My purpose wasn't for the numbers or the logging, but visiting those sites while in Madrid was pretty amazing. I just thought the cache was a very cool idea and thought it might be a nice gift for the CO and future finders. My geosenses are still in training, I guess. -tvchick.
  11. Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. I do remember skimming the posted cache while in Spain and noticing the CO had altered the listing with a commentary against the reviewer's opinion and mentioning some other sites in a not-so-friendly neighborhood way. I wasn't sure what was going on, but to avoid the "vandalism" thing, I'd actually brought my own rock from the US. (Which was funny explaining to others.). But I'd also brought another camo'd container with a log... But I guess neither really matters now. i didnt care for thd smiley so much as to thank the CO for the idea of the cache, which was a clever way to pre-explore the city. At least now I understand why the locking happened, which ive never come across. Thanks again.
  12. I went on vacation recently and like a prepared cacher, downloaded a bunch of caches to my smartphone. I didn't have the time (or data plan) to log them while I was away, but now I come home to find one of the caches has been archived and locked for any additional logs. I found it (GC1AHW1) before the official archive date, but if it's locked now, does that means there's no way I can ever log it? I'm just curious, not because of the numbers, but because it was a memorable cache that was unfortunately archived for violation issues. -tvchick.
  13. Adding a recent log on a cache I own. This cacher, JJG10101 consistently posts great, creative logs. Some short, some long, but always enjoyable to read! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=14bf8e9a-db2e-4024-89a5-29eaa2889288 Maybe this can become an ongoing thread... instead of wondering where all the well written logs have gone, maybe we can encourage people by posting examples?
  14. Ah! I didn't realize this had been added. The problem is that it's sort of buried in the app. You need to hit "Drop a Trackable" before the "Visit Geocache" option shows up. Which seems a bit counterintuitive. Maybe you could have "Visit" and "Drop" as options in the menu, the same way "Field Note" vs. "Log" are options under "Style" for submit? Either way, thanks for the inclusion!
  15. I agree... I think the thumbs down is sort of overused. What if people threw thumbs on posted caches? You'd see lots of thumbs down from puzzle haters, hike haters, bush haters, booger haters... well, you get my point. I'm not sure what the Thumbs Down's are really there for. Maybe it would be better to have the Thumbs Up's? We don't have *non*-Favorite points on caches. Just an idea. Oh heavens, I foresee someone replying to this with "Thumbs Down" already!
  16. Well, since today here at the job, our network = NOTwork, I am goofing off instead of mowing the lawn of paperwork growing on my desk. I know some cachers lament the loss of well-written log entries out there. I'm barely over a year on the scene, so I don't know if I have a worthy opinion on it, but as you can guess by this post so far, I'm not exactly a TFTC-only logger. And so I wondered: are there any logs or caches that cachers consider good/entertaining reads? I found one by a SoCal cacher about his rattlesnake bite adventure. It almost makes me wish there were "favorite" points for logs, though I imagine that could go a little nuts. I found this puzzle cache that is chock full of good reads, particularly because of the cacher it honored: http://coord.info/GC1444P Happy Wednesday!
  17. Er, the avatar thing is a neat idea, but way too cumbersome in current form. It's annoying to have that much space for a log when all the actual log on the cache I'm looking at says is "TFTC." The avatar might be nice on the more extensively written cache logs, but it's weird when there's an avatar and a huge chunk of white space to the right of it. Just a thought!
  18. Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I won't be around for the big whoopdedoo in Central Park next week. It would be fun to hit an event outside my GZ. I sent a message, but in case anybody else reading is curious too, I think I'm running the short loop with my non-caching non-running muggle co-traveler. Even before I started running, it's been a dream of mine to run in Central Park! It's hard enough keeping caches in neighborhood parks from being muggled, so these must be awesome caches to survive here. I love that there are caches in Central Park. How cool is that?
  19. Just curious: does anyone know if there'll be a Geocaching Day meetup at all in Manhattan? I know I didn't see one posted, so I figure it's a no go. But to quote 101 Dalmatians: "And yet, I wonder..." On a semi-related note, if any Manhattan cachers are reading, after Snug as a Bug, any highly recommended caches I can pick up running in Central Park?
  20. Just downloaded the update and very impressed with the personal notes fix. Which makes me wonder, then, should it be renamed "Personal Notes" on the iPhone since it syncs with that section on the geocache pages? Or should the spot on the HTML page be renamed "Notepad" to mesh? Just a thought. It's 6pm and there's still sun up, time to grab a cache!
  21. Heya, T. Sadler, welcome to the club! I'm still relatively new (1 year on me) but it's fun and SO addictive. But in a good opposite-of-crack sort of way. You've had some good replies on why Premium is good, but did someone also mention the Favorites option too? For every 10 caches you find you get to award a Favorite point to a cache. Kind of neat to keep track of memorable ones and also reward those caches that impress you (or in my case, depress you until you find them and are then impressed). Acronyms! There's a post on the Geocaching.com Facebook page just yesterday about this, but ones you'll see out there: TFTC = thanks for the cache TNLNSL = took nothing, left nothing, signed log FTF = first to find! TFTC (or TFTH) = thanks for the cache, or thanks for the hide LPC = lamp post cache P&G = park and grab Those are the ones I see most often. But feel free to make up your own, or (gasp!) not even use acronyms in your logs. One I like to use: TFTFO = thanks for the freak out. Generally reserved for caches in which I encounter snakes, leaping lizards, not-so-Disney-cute rats, or spiders with anger issues. Happy caching!
  22. Further proof that I exist for the amusement of the geocommunity. Which I consider an honor! "Maybe the cache is camo'd as that piece of dog poop?" (a moment later) "Uh, no, I guess that was just... dog poop. Oh, hey, what's that big ammo can doing over there?"
  23. Ah. I see the problem. I'm dyslexic and reading the grid backwards. Never mind. (Doh. Can't... find... topic delete button to... save me from epic embarrassment...) If a mod happens to be browsing, please feel free to lock this one before I bury myself any deeper. Yeah, these aren't the droids you're looking for. You can go about your business. Move along, move along...
  24. And on checking my cache stats on, well, my CacheStats program, it turns out that was the 2nd 4/1.5 cache I'd found. The previous one, GC2R02C, didn't register on my D/T grid either. This is like an episode of Lost. I'm even more confused than I was before. Cue creepy dramatic drums. And maybe a smoke monster, for the heck of it.
  25. Just curious if anyone else had experienced this little glitch (I assume it's a glitch?): Trying to fill up blank spots on my Difficulty/Terrain grid and todally finally grabbed one near my home that had eluded me. It's a 4/1.5, which was a sad little zero on my grid. But after logging it and updating my statistics, I noticed that 4/1.5 spot is still empty. Not sure if... maybe it was a different D/T when first posted and that's what the stats capture, or... well, I can't think of another explanation. This is when I use the famous quote: "Ruh?" - Scooby Doo
