  1. Hello every one! Merry Christmas and happy new year to ya'all!
  2. I'm still a little conflicted over the subject myself. Still a few days of turkey season left, but after that's over I'll go out and see what I can do with the GC thing. It looks like there are suppose to be quite a few with in a mile of my house and who knows how many I go right past in daily travels. I'd hate to get "hooked" on another hobby I don't have time for.
  3. Sorry if this is considered off topic. I was afraid it might that's why I started it in it's own thread. Why do you do it? Is it the finding of the cache? Finding cool places? Comaradery of team caching? On the hiding side, is it just the desire to share a cool place you happen to like or something else? Maybe a "pay back" obligation to the sport for caches others have set up for you to look for?
  4. I.e., we need to assert our rights to be able to place caches on public lands. Wonders where JR got that from reading that post ? Most of us want to work with the DNR and the Parks Departments . Just like the Hunters and Fishermen have to work within the structures they set forth . What if they said you couldn't hunt, fish or hike these lands ? How would you feel then ? Star Sorry for the misunderstanding. We are just learning to interpret each other's comments. I'll try to do better not to jump to conclusions. I'm sorry, it's a habit developed from posting on several rather more "combative" messege boards. I believer Geo Cachers and hunters have a lot in common and could be a force for good benefit to both, if we co-operate.
  5. Exactly correct. Sometimes. Some areas do in fact have lists of approved activities others have list of prohibited activiets, some have both. You have to know the rules of the land in which you wish to play but nearly every public property in Indiana banns carrying things in to the woods and leaving them unless it is specifily exempted. The list of prohibited activities includes carrying items in to the forrest and leaving them. Other than specificly identified activitys on the list. which also identifys items that may be left in the forrest temporarily and also lists the requirements for leaving them there and when they must be removed. For example, treestands must be labled with the owners name, address and be remove at the end of the hunting season and may not be installed prior to hunting season. Allong with a list of several other prohibitions they must meet. Most uses of public land by organised groups for organised activity, it is expected to notify the property manager. As a member of Indiana Bowhunters Association I know this. Use of archery equipment is allowed on most state forrest property and most national forrest property. Most of those propertys have camp grounds or allow camping at large. It is allowed to wander at will and shoot your bow and arrow in a safe manner on those propertys, yet any time the organisation PLANS an IBA sancitioned activity the property manager of the land we wish to use is notified, solicited for advise and permission, and he nearly all ways has "suggestions" for a procedure it would be wise to follow if we want to make use of the property.
  6. In order to deflect this discussion from the personal "you" to the universal "you", I point out that of my 10 cache hides most have land manager permission. After all it is only polite to ask. That was the particular sense of the word "you" I intended. Sorry for any confusion. In the future unless otherwise noted all use of the word 'you' by myself, is with the intent to indicate the general population of Indiana. My apologies for any misunderstanding. I don't believe I've ever run across any park or property rules written specificly for any one particular "you" or "me". As far as I know all rules and regulations apply to the general sense of the words "you, we, me, and you'ns". Not to include park personel or law enforcement. They are exempt from all regulation.
  7. Hi, I'm known on the web as Jack Ryan and I say what ever I want where ever I go. I'm not much of a cache'er but I know messege boards and the more you restrict and censor one the more you choked it down. They get dull and boring and soon die. If people like and respect each other they won't "want" to hurt each other's feeling and that is the best kind of board but you can't "make" it that way. The people using it have to want it to be that way. I've only been here a little while but I haven't seen any thing I'd call a flame war worth getting one's pantys in a bunch over. All seems pretty civil and tame yet interesting to me.
  8. You're not kidding. My total was $16.49. For 25 tacks! For comparison, my 50 Bright eye reflective tacks were $2.00. But people found them in the day. Yes, I think I'm truly addicted now. I thought this sounded like a good idea at first but that's to expensive for those. I won't pay it. there's got to be a better way. Have you ever tryed those ones that look like a bread sack twist wire? I've never had a problem with people finding those. They have red and white.
  9. I think I just noticed I'm not the only one to get what I was saying mixed up with what I was meaning I thought I'd read.
  10. No snow here this morning, 40 degrees and constant wind. Pretty breezy. I've seen a lot worse. Like when the lights went out couple days ago and it was raining buckets. Buckets with wate in 'em too. I cut the grass all morning and I'm gona go out and do the trimming if I can catch the weed wacker next blow around.
  11. This exemplafies why I don't understand their position concerning Geo Caching during hunting seasons. They don't restrict any other activity based on those guidlines other than to recomend season appropriate clothing and behaviour. Suggestion. If you see a hunter and are concerned they are not aware of your presence, NEVER WAVE OR MOTION to signal your presence. ALWAYS ISSUE AUDIBLE WARNINGS such as whistle or speak to alert them you are present. Normaly just a short whistle is all that is required. They most likely are already aware and will signal back to indicate such and all may proceed with their activity safely.
  12. That explains a lot of your problems. You THINK you have a right to use public ground how ever you please. The fact is YOU HAVE NO RIGHT to use public ground in any manner not prescribed. When you recognise this difference and begin seeking permiission instead of asserting a nonexistant right, I suspect you will enjoy a much different expirience with the property managers. It some how was seeming to me, the inability to place an actual cache pretty much summed up the situation we were addressing here. If that is not the case I'm sorry. I missunderstood the situation.
  13. I too was concerned with this issue. I have since learned the hourse bars were shut down due to enviromental concerns with the waste run off.
  14. I just thought of a new angle to geocaching. Hunting Geocaches literally, you know with a gun. Good chance to use that high powered scope, no need to get off the trail just shot the cache from .25 miles away . Not all DNR regulated properties are under the same rules for intended use. State parks are specificly "no gun zones". It is not permitted to have a firearm in the park for any reason or of any type. Not a bow and arrow. Not even a BB gun. Except for, always an exception, specific designated herd reduction hunts. The park is closed for all other uses during these hunts. I'd advise against disturbing tree stands or other hunting equipment. This is an extremely touchy subject among the hunting community and likely to lead to no good for anybody. Indiana DNR rules allow for tree stands to be left on public property during the hunting seasons where hunting is allowed, but they are supposed to be removed at dates specified in the DNR rules. I'm very "green" on the subject of Geo Cacheing so please excuse me if I get terminology wrong, but I'd suggest the form of cache that involves taking a picture to verify your acheivment and virtual logging on line would be much more acceptable to all property managers. In fact I don't see any way they could stop it at any time of year. I think it would be wise to give due consideration to the hunting seasons when cacheing but I don't think it could be stopped if you want to be beligerant. I think the hunting community could be one of your largest alias if they were courted to participate. I myself only learned for the first time of Geo Cacheing in a newspaper hunting column a few weeks ago. Best of luck and good caching to all, JPR
  15. I like it, but I don't see their logic for it from them. I didn't see any rule on the DNR page where they discussed cacheing and display the permit request disallowing any time frame. Is this a general denial for all DNR propertys or just one in particular that see's a lot of hunting pressure?
  16. That would be a new trick for an old dog? It doesn't sound promising. Why would that make a difference when the coordinates are all in Long Lat? Is the an informational page explaining the specifics of what WGS84 is? I'm not sure my Garmin EMap even has that.
  17. I hadn't thought of that one. Guess I'll HAVE to give it another try.
  18. I like gadgets. I like GPS and topos and compasses. I like going out finding stuff not just everybody else has seen and I don't like a bunch of signs telling me where to go and when to go there all the time and I don't like a pack of people telling me I have to do what their sign says. I really shouldn't say I've come to a final conclusion on GC. I like the secret messege and treasure hunt aspect. I guess I'd like it better if I'd thought of it. ...but yeah, I join forums that look interesting just to chat. There aren't that many interesting people around ya know. Ya gotta take 'em where ya find 'em or accept a life of conversing with dolts. Is that a problem?
  19. I've got a sad story about Smokey and a Doberman if you want to hear it and have a hanky handy.
  20. And There lies the problem Jack ! Your Found log states it quite differently : Sorry I am not trying to confuse you , really just trying to help . So you just join forums to chat then , not actually because you like the sport/game? Seems like a lot of trouble to go thru to join if yer not into geocaching . Star How'd I say it? The rail is south of the mark. The mark is north of the railroad. The rail road generally runs east and west and the county road cross's it at 90 degrees. Standing in the middle of the tracks and the county road at the same time facing north and extend your left hand at a 45 degree angle between front and left. Now extend a suitable finger and you'll be pointing directly at the surveyors mark in the big cement thing they are talking about. It was my first logged "find". I don't know the protocal yet evidently. =Edited below to clear brain fog.- I must need to get more sleep. When I passed that thing yesterday, my first thought was I had logged that wrong. Then I read it last night after you mentioned and I could have sworn my logged said the noth side. It wasn't the way I remembered writing it but that sure was the way I read it. Evidently I've just now totally comprehended what I read in your quotes of my own log and see what you are saying. Any way, I know where it is. I'll take a little nap now and read it all over again tonight.
  21. DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1965 1.6 MI E FROM HURON. ABOUT 1.55 MILES EAST ALONG THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO RAILROAD FROM THE CROSSING OF ROAD NUMBER 1036W AT HURON, IN SECTION 4, T 3 N, R 2 W, AT MILEPOST 136-20 AND A ROAD CROSSING, 10 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTH RAIL, SET IN THE TOP OF AN ABANDONED CONCRETE BASE FOR A SEMAPHORE SIGNAL, 71 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 50, 24 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF ROAD NUMBER 980S, 5.2 FEET SOUTHWEST OF A ROAD CROSSING SIGN, ABOUT LEVEL WITH THE TRACK.
  22. Since when did 6" of snow become a bad thing for a sled dog?
  23. Longitude and Lat in degrees and minute with a decimal instead of seconds. I'm not very familiar with the other options much beyond knowing they exist. I drive past that bench mark a couple times a day and that very thought hit me as I was passing it today. I forgot how I'd described and and noticed it was on the north side of the tracks today. Thought I'd described it wrong and meant to check but then forgot it until just now. There is no way the mark can be on the south side. It's just a steep bank you could hardly even walk up. The little disk I think is the mark is in a huge block of cement. It's not going any where. I did notice today some of the caches I'd looked for weren't as "stale" as I'd thought. I was looking at the date they were established instead of last found. A couple of them have been found this year. I post on a lot of boards of all types. Mostly politics and hunting and fishing boards. I got the nick years ago when I first started. The board thing was just intended as a temporay entertainment thing and I was wrapping up what was the current last book Clancy had written with the Ryan character. I started trolling some board under the names of all the characters in the books and sooner or later a subject came up I wanted to discuss for myself rather than the character. Then another then another. Before long I was Jack Ryan. I use it on all messege boards I post on. People call me that when I see people from the boards in the real world now. I even get junk mail and the Investor's Business Daily in that name now. It's kind of odd. I'm leading a double life, LOL. I should have stuck with the Clark moniker.
  24. Ahhhh...after prying most of the molars out of Jack's skull we get to the meat of the situation. Something's amiss here, Jack, and I think you know it. There are a lot of experienced geocachers lurking on this forum that would be glad to help you out. If you want, we can probably set you on the right path (pun intended). Specifically, if you can tell us which 3 or 4 caches you DNF'd we may be able to figure out what's going on... The meat? The only meat of those 3 or 4 was they were "stale". They hadn't been logged as found in quite a while except for the one in Spring Mill Park and I didn't find it because the property manager removed it. It's a personality trait that it drives me up a wall when stuff isn't where it's suppose to be. I'm not going out of my way for nor searching all day for something the size of a film can hidden in the woods. I just like orienteering my way around to hunt and fish. It's a challenge always know exactly where I'm at, blah blah, probably about the same as ya'all. I just don't have the patience to search around for something that may not even be there unless it's gold or diamonds, not a hand full of fungus and not just to put my name on a paper. I got a few marked on my GPS and if I'm in the area I may look around a little just to see what the attraction is. Who knows, I may get hooked. I do get a little thrill out of happening on those survey markers. They are where they are suppose to be. It sort of peaked my interest to see a few cachers had evidently been pretty close to some of my "secret" hunting spots. It would be wise not to wear blue, white or red in the woods for about the next month and I'd consider it a personal favor if possible to wait past noon to cache or hunt mushrooms. I know all about "the I got every right.... blah blah" but I got every right to be blasting with my shot gun all the way until dark too, but the absolute crack of dawn to 9 or 10 is magic time. If I had the power I'd take the turkey hunting rules back to the "out by noon" rule and add a no mushroom hunting rule until after noon. The way it is now is chaos and everybody gets screwed up.
  25. Sounds almost like a JOB! A laser range finder is a lot more handy than a bunch of tape measures and such. Come's in handy when setting up a deer blind or such too.
