  1. Just as the title says...New Garmin 24k topographical map for region #2 West: California and Nevada. I paid $100+ for it two months ago. Asking $60 shipped. I accept payment via paypal only to confirmed PP addresses only. I am a PP premiere member and 100% Ebay feedback of 454+ so buy with confidence. Card has been used in my Oregon 450 for about 8 hours and functions flawlessly. This should function in any newer Garmin with a micro SD card slot. Email me at shawn.senavinin(AT)gmail.com Thanks!
  2. The Garmin 450 and the Magellan Explorist GC are Mac compatible.
  3. STEP ONE: Buy a Premium membership so you can download "pocket queries" of 500 caches at a time. STEP TWO: Try this- Downloading PQs to your GPS using a Mac Hope it helps!
  4. For step by step instructions, this might help: Getting PQs onto your Magellan GC It's Mac specific, but should work the same way for PCs.
  5. For us it's the convenience factor. Plus, we get nervous changing batts in the middle of a caching day when we haven't uploaded. I know the memory's supposed to be non-volatile, but we worry. We've had great luck ordering the lithium Energizers in bulk on Ebay. I was worried at first they might be counterfeit, but they last 18+ hours, so go figure...
  6. I don't know the seller personally, buy they are a top-rated seller with excellent feedback. This is the best price I've seen. commercial link removed by moderator
  7. We've got three caches just about ready to go out in Nevada!
  8. You are very welcome I too have the problem you described. In addition, my iPhoto wants to open every time I plug in, as it wants to "sync" with my GC. I just eject once and pull the USB cable. I wince a little when I get the error message, but I have had no problems at all with the GC afterwards. I am using OS 10.5.8 on my Macbook.
  9. In my opinion, the above quote from Dragery pretty much sums it up. We haven't been caching long, but I've met a lot of geocachers who don't use the additional bells and whistles others have touted above. I know this because I ask. Before the GC came out there really wasn't any other choice than a full featured GPSr, so they bought what they thought would work best for them on their budget. With little effort, I was able to find a used GC for $120 on Ebay. For that kind of money there should be *zero* complaints unless it's defective. It has served our newbie caching team so well I couldn't care less if there are features missing on the GC. The final verdict? For people who use their GPSr for hiking and general navigation: Probably not. For people who don't need a handheld navigation tool, but love a hassle-free paperless caching experience: Quit second guessing and debating and just buy one already, then upgrade to firmware 1.4. Done.
  10. I didn't even try to use my Mac for this. As far as I know the Magellan website won't work. I just used my work laptop (Vista PC) and did the upgrade. Took just a few minutes and no issues at all. Mmmm... firmware v1.4 goodness! Good luck.
  11. Read THIS thread. There's no reason the instructions for Mac should be any different than those for a PC. This may not be the way everyone does it, but it should work in principle.
  12. If all you want is something simple to use and straightforward you should really think about the Geomate Jr. The Groundspeak store has them for $69. It's a real GPS stripped down to basics, and more importantly your six year old can probably use it by himself. There's an arrow which tell them which way to walk and how far they are from the cache. It's cheap, kid friendly and easy to use. CLICK HERE FOR THE GEOMATE JR. AT THE Groundspeak SHOP
  13. Please please please do yourself a favor and check out the Magellan Explorist GC. It's a purpose built geocaching GPS that is so simple and easy to use. It's not the most impressive unit available, but it offer hassle free paperless geocaching fully supported by geocaching.com. Uploads are a breeze. The learning curve is (seriously) easy. The display is great, even in bright light. I'm no techno-whiz by any stretch of the imagination and I had mine fully functional with it's first downloaded pocket query in about 20 minutes without reading the instructions. If you are a back country hiker who needs satellite photos and all the topo maps this is probably not for you. I am so happy we decided to go with this unit over the way more expensive Delorme we initally wanted. I lucked out and found a used GC on Ebay for $120. Now, we can't even go to the grocery store or out to dinner without bringing it along! We cache practically every day since the kid is out of school for the summer. Sorry to sound like a shill, but I really love this thing. I doubt we would be so excited about geocaching if we were using any other unit.
  14. Glad I could help! I didn't really see these steps as limitations, especially if you are used to using external hard drives. But, everyone's proficiency level is different. There is no way to upload via email. To upload, I do this: - Go to your "your profile" (link is under your username on the main page after you log on) - Scroll down to the "Field Notes" section (in the column on the right, under your user name) - Click "Access Field Notes" link - The bottom choice if for the Magellan Explorist GC - It will tell you to click the link. - Click the Magellan tab on the following page - Further step-by-step instructions will be given from there. It's super easy! Paperless caching can't be easier than this. Once you do it a few times you can do it in your sleep practically. Enjoy your trip! I wish we were there.
  15. I know this must have been discussed before, but search doesn't seem to come up with anything. I was reading some reviews of my new Magellan Explorist GC tonight and couldn't help but notice a few people who seemed unable to move caches onto their GC or simply said it was "not compatible". I have to disagree. I run my GPX files through a Macbook running OS 10.5 Leopard and haven't had a problem. I wonder if the issue is 10.6 Snow Leopard or possibly older OS version 10.4 or older? My gut thought was that maybe some just didn't know the hoops to jump through to get from email to caching. In order to shed some light I thought I'd share my method: - Turn on your Explorist GC and let it boot up - Plug the GC into your Mac using the USB cable - Wait a moment or two until the "Magellan" drive icon shows up on your desktop - Download the zipped GPX from geocaching.com, saving it to your to your desktop (so it is easy to find) - Double click the zip file and choose to expand it to your desktop (again, so it is easy to find) - Double click the expanded GPX file folder to show its contents - Double click on the Magellan icon (which is the internal hard drive on your GC) - Double click the "geocaches" folder to open it (you'll see the original GPX file containing the pre-loaded - caches which come with the unit) - Return to the folder with the new GPX files you want to load. Select both folders and copy them - Return to the "geocaches" folder in the Magellan. Paste the copied GPX files into that folder - Close all folders - Drag the Magellan icon into the toolbar "eject" icon - Wait a moment for the unit to un-dock (the "Magellan" icon will disappear from your desktop) - Unplug the unit from your Mac - Choose "geocaches" from your unit's menu - You should see the downloded caches. If not, you can do a search for them - Once found, you can now delete the original zip file if you wish, and save the unzipped GPX files or delete them as you like I hope this helps!
