I have a Megellan 200 Explorer. A really basic model but just what I needed in the price range I was willing to pay ($140) since I'm new to this wonderful sport. I didn't want to get stuck with an expensive GPS if I ended up not liking geocaching. (But how could that be?!?! ) Turns out I'm totally hooked!! Magellan is great for those who haven't used GPS before. It does a great job in getting me withing 5-30 feet depending on the variables of weather, tree cover, etc. I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone who is just starting out.

I have a hunting fanny pack (called a day pack) that I take. It has some basic first aid stuff, some Clif Bars, batteries, a regular compass, whistle, and basic survival gear. Not that I plan on using the survival gear but you never know when you may get caught in an unexpected downpour in the woods. Water is a must. I always carry a good pocket knife, too. Never know when that psycho squirrel will attack! LOL

Good point about the FTF being a dud to some folks regarding the prize. I hadn't thought about that. However, I think I have placed some good swag in the cache so it shouldn't matter who gets there first. Shoot, I've had more fun putting this thing together and I'm excited to get it out there! Thanks to all for your helpful input.

Thanks, briansnat. It seems the folks here in Syracuse like to include FTF gifts and I'd like to do the same. I think it also helps get people out to new caches. I'd like to reward the first cacher in some small way. Also, I was cracking up reading the best/worst cache finds...what a hoot!

I'm getting ready to hide my first cache and was just curious...what is an appropriate "First To Find" prize? What is generally acceptable as far as what one might spend to reward the first cacher? Thanks!
