  1. Actually, it's even easier than that. Go to Settings, put the phone into "Airplane Mode" and then re-enable the wi-fi. The carrier stays switched off so no data/text charges and the wifi will still allow you to surf/do whatever when in a wifi zone.
  2. Whilst it's not really a series, AllyD created this route of around 8 miles for 7 caches. I am sure that you could modify it a little to make the route shorter: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...54-b9e4a4515a16
  3. Welcome! Where are you normally located? I am sure that someone will be willing to help you, otherwise, any questions just ask in a new thread, no matter how silly!
  4. Wish I had seen this thread before now, would have been happy to help out.
  5. I have reported this thread and asked for it to be closed/removed altogether. I am a little disappointed that it has deteriorated into a slanging match - this does not make the UK Geocaching community look good.
  6. I have two eTrex H units for my scouts to play at caching and to be honest, the kids have a heck of a time trying to get them to work. I lent them my eTrex Venture HC and they got on with that much better. Another plus is that it is USB connection for easy updating. We pickd mine up from eBay for £100 or so. TBH, paperless with the scouts is just complicating it too much. I prepped a few sheets with cache details and laminated them. These only had 4 caches each, but you can easily fit 10 or 20 per page if your format it right and if laminated will stand up much better to Scout treatment.
  7. Thought it was time to bump this thread, what with supposed summer being here, lots of newbie around.
  8. "Emergency caching?" Hahaha!! Love it! You are correct. However, the app does not show PMO caches and, obviously, no PQs (when they work...)
  9. And so my question is answered! I wonder if GAGB knows about this...
  10. SO, I clicked one of the banner ads at the top of the gc website and got to http://www.ukcachers.org/news.php Anyone heard of this "organisation"? Only been around 15 days at the time of writing. Having clicked around the site a few times, all I can think is "Don't GAGB already do this?" HEEEEEEEEEELP!
  11. It's geo-cay-shing. All n00bs pronounce it like that! I seriously doubt that FCO's first find will be an ammo-can. More likely an urban signpost nano or LPC 35mm. Of course, these will have bad coords too... For the record, I am not fed up with the cachers who only have 1 - 30 finds and then leave, they don't hurt me at all. What does disappoint is that for whatever reason (some are different to those above) they haven't stayed and carried on playing. Perhaps that's what the community (or GS of course) should try and find out.
  12. Hey Mandy, glad you liked the first show! You'll find (as has been noted already) that the second show is a little quiet. Just for info, if you can't get the laptop (and assuming that you have speakers on your PC) then if you go to the page show 2 then you can simply press the play button (right facing triangle) just below the title of the page and the podcast should play right there in your browser! http://www.ukgcpodcast.com/2010/07/06/show-2-mega/ Good luck, let us know what you think! Collin
  13. Funnily enough, when I went to London last week I bit the bullet and paid for *the unmentionable* app and had no problems with the PQs at all. Only problem was crap accuracy and far too many people!
  14. Thankyou! I am trying my best to keep it to around 30 minutes, I had a look the other night and I cut about 20 minutes from the recordings. Must have all been waffle though... I am intending to have a "guest" of the month, I am also trying to get some questions to Deceangi for "Ask The Reviewer". If anyone wants to take part then they can do so from the page at http://www.ukgcpodcast.com/ask-the-reviewer/ - Dave has said that he will record the answers in audio format and send them to me to include in the podcast. I have had three (I think) questions so far so would like a few more to make this a regular feature. I don't know what went "wrong" with the sound level. I did nothing different to what I did for show 1 and yet the volume, I agree, is low. Either that or as B&R said, music's too loud! I can't do anything about this month's, except apologise, and try harder for the August show. I have had many emails and discussion with people since releasing the podcast (and creating the "idea" on the feedback forum) about the iPhone 4 being the best yet. Unfortunately, when I recorded that particular segment of the podcast the iPhone 4 had only been available for 16 hours in the UK and I could find no reports on the GPS accuracy specifically for Geocaching. Of course, I then completely forgot to mention the 4 when recording the segment! I am going to do another segment on the iPhone for hiding in August's show so feel free to make your comments in email, on here, via skype (link on the website) or record a short piece of audio and send it to me! There is a feature that will allow me to schedule the actual post for the podcast, however, I haven't quite got to grips with the host for the mp3 file itself yet and am unsure whether I can schedule release for that. I suspect I can, but need to investigate. In the meantime I would prefer to do things "live" as such so that I know it all works before I disappear away from the PC for a week and miss yet another schedule. Many thanks to all for your support and don't forget to tell your caching friends about the podcast!
  15. Thankyou! Volume - see next post! G S A K - I am not American and hate pronouncing initials as words! Heard one the other day from an American friend. She was talking about someone who had gone into hospital for a routine op and had come out with "merser". ?????? Oh, you mean MRSA?? Took me ages to figure that one out!
  16. 12 Hours? If it stayed unfound that long around here we would start suspecting iPhone coordinates...
  17. Not really, you just have to make sure you do it while on wifi. Indeed. I thought of that after I had hit "add reply" and then got interrupted and forgot to edit the message!
  18. If you're on a 3G iPhone, you can't download ANY PQs at the moment, let alone 1 PQ for the whole UK. In theory though, there's no reason why it *shouldn't* work, in theory, as the smallest iPhone is 8GB capable. However, to get the PQ onto the iPhone you first (I believe) have to upload it to gc.com then pull it to the phone. Regardless of the time it would take to up/download, that would be a massive dent on a 3G allocation from a provider!
  19. I have a question: What on earth are people using to grab the coordinates using their iPhone? I am about to hide a cache (a nano to continue the Urban Guerilla series - Sorry!) and thought I would test the iPhone coordinates theory. No, I won't be using the iPhone coordinates for the cache page, but I may well publish them on the page to prove how innacurate they are! Unfortunately I cannot figure out what people are using to grab the coordinates. I found a webpage at http://cinnamonthoughts.org/iphone/gps-coordinates/ and that seemed to be fairly accurate in a very (very!) quick test. Ta!
  20. Unfortunately the eTrex Venture HC is one of those GPS units that cannot directly hold the PQ as it is downloaded. I have the exact same unit. I import the PQ into GSAK (http://www.gsak.net) and do a little re-working and filtering and then get GSAK to send the caches to the GPS. GSAK (as long as you have the Garmin driver for the GPS) will recognise the GPS (when you set the options) and format the cache details appropriately. Bear in mind that the eTrex Venture HC can only hold 500 waypoints (caches) at a time. If you are into multi-caches then you might want to filter GSAK to say 480 caches to give you a little space to mark new waypoints. Hope this helps!
  21. I have seen a number of people that say they use GSAK and INATN for their stats. Now that INATN is gone many of those people can't get the UK Counties map for their profile stats. I have written a (not so short) tutorial on how to use the FindStatGen GSAK macro to display the UK Counties map. I haven't gone into the intricacies of the macro for anything except the maps as I believe that playing is half the fun! Anyway... Please feel free to have a look and let me know (constructively - be nice, it took me two hours to write!) what you think: http://www.ukgcpodcast.com/gsak-fsg-macro/ Collin
  22. Certainly a well deserved win, congrats Guanajuato! I looked at the photo and it struck as to how timeless it is. Have you got photoshop? I would be interested to see the results of a Painterly type processing on it: http://www.planetphotoshop.com/a-new-painterly-effect.html
  23. I suspect not. We would have heard something, either publicly or via PM by now if they had.
