    Australian travelling to California, suggestions wanted

    Opposite Disneyland was California Adventure Park - I think you get in on the same ticket but well worthwhile - some great rides there.

     

    I've heard that Legoland is pretty average if you don't have children.

     

    Idk if you're a health freak but everyone who goes to Cali has to have an In'n'out burger/meal.

     

    If you're in LA go to Universal Studios and surrounds - can't miss it if you're in the area.

     

    If you're a sports nut you may be able to catch a baseball game.

    Might be a better idea getting them a cheap android phone (sub 100) and installing cgeo. No need for any data, just load pocket queries or gpx files at home and then use the phone like a gps (you don't need a sim card)

    What would go a long way to solving this would be requiring a valid "paid" e-mail address, one where an ISP somewhere knows your personal details. You could still use a free e-mail address on the site, but Groundspeak would have the real e-mail address on file for every user.

     

    Nowadays many people do not get email addresses from their ISPs. Google Fiber for one I know wouldn't provide a paid address.

     

    I personally have a paid address but TBH captcha on signup would slow down this far more effectively whilst still letting in legit cachers.

    Salut, tout d'abord, désolé, je ne parle pas français (mais je le fais en anglais et en allemand).

     

    J'étais en France il ya quelques mois, je me souviens qu'il y ait deux caches à faire avec des graffitis de Space Invader. J'ai trouvé un (Bastille) mais il ya un je ne peux pas trouver. Est-ce que quelqu'un sait de quoi il s'agit ou si elle a été archivée.

    Hi, first of all, sorry I don't speak French (but I do English and German).

     

    I was in France a few months ago, I recall there being 2 caches to do with Space Invader 's graffiti. I've found one (Bastille) but there's one I can't find. Does anyone know which one it is or if it's been archived.

    It doesn't mean they're not there, more likely that people just haven't visited the area.

     

    I found two caches yesterday that hadn't been visited in 6 months, despite being 6km away from Sydney. Where are you located?

    Anaconda is basically a supermarket for outdoor stuff.

     

    Yeah it's not all flash and professionally designed but it sells other trusted brands like Garmin, Avanti, Giant etc.

     

    When you buy from Anaconda you generally get something that another company has made (it's a retailer) whereas Kathmandu sells its own stuff.

     

    The quality really isn't that bad.

    I need to get a few things to do a 2 night hike in the Blue Mountains (NSW)?

     

    Should I get my stuff from Kathmandu, Mountain Designs, Macpac? etc.

     

    What do you think? Fellow Australians I ask for your help :)

    Purely depends on what you want. Kathmandu tends to be a bit pricey but is always on sale.

     

    I personally got stuff for a recent camp at mixed places after doing comparison:

     

    Sleeping bag at Mountain Designs

    Tent at Kathmandu

    Backpack at Kangaroo Tent City (It's in Chatswood)

    Anaconda for bits and bobs (Heximine, Matches etc)

     

    Bear in mind that Anaconda Will Price Beat so look online and then go to the one in Belrose (assuming I can approximate your location)

    I cache predominantly with my HTC Sensation and find myself using "that free app whose name shan't be mentioned" and CacheSense. I like them both, CacheSense has a more clean feel and is official whereas "that free app whose name shan't be mentioned" is constantly under development and has great support on Facebook. Both I use but "that free app whose name shan't be mentioned" edges just since it is free and It's storing cache function I prefer. Either import PQs or store the cache from the page.

    Australian Souvenirs - Why don't we have them?

    Congratulations Groundspeak!!

     

    With the publication of the two millionth geocache, Groundspeak has begun releasing the souvenirs where the artwork currently exists. I've noticed I now have a NSW souvenir already and am expecting a Victorian and an ACT souvenir shortly. This is great news. I'm looking forward to receiving souvenirs for the other states and the Northern Territory when I visit them in the near future.

    There's also a WA souvenir but no QLD or VIC yet...

    Any teen geocachers?

    In Sydney we have multiple families who cache (with kids operating the account) or kids by themselves.

     

    I personally am 14 and often use public transport and my bike to find caches (It helps being 1km from a station).

    I'll tend to choose high favourite, close to train station (sub)urban hides. Maybe if you prefer bushbashing you'll see less kids (unless they're driven around by their parents.

     

    However I try to make as many events as I can even if that involves driving and if I'm holidaying somewhere I'll be sure to pick up a few caches.

     

    So yeah there are a few of us around, your best bet is to turn up to an event or meet some people in the 'wild'

    That's how it would work in a perfect world, but that definitely wouldn't be how it would work in today's world. Based on past experience and the trends I'm seeing, I can guarantee and would wager a large sum of money on niraD's scenario being the one that would happen. Having a reward for hiding a cache would create a massive number of low-quality hides.

    But wouldn't low quality hides not receive favourites...

    I do see where you're coming form though.

    Then your Favorites points can go to the best of the best caches in your area, the top 10% of the caches that have already received Favorites points from others. Your Favorites points can help the best of the best stand out from the ones that are merely good.

     

    But I don't think it's worth changing the meaning of Favorites points now. And inflating the supply of Favorites points changes their meaning.

     

    This new system would encourage cachers (like me) to place better caches that may be awarded favourite points to try and accumulate 20 favourites. Overall this will make there be more quality caches.
    That's another thing... I don't think it's a good idea to create an external incentive (e.g., more Favorites points) for hiding a cache. One of the things I appreciate about Groundspeak is that they minimize the external incentives for hiding caches. Challenge Caches can't require cache ownership, breeder caches and "curse of the FTF" caches aren't allowed, etc. IMHO, this is a good thing. People should hide caches because they want to own and maintain a cache for the long term, not because they want some external reward.

    In Sydney there are a multitude of great caches and to me favourites are about awarding above the average caches, where the CO has put in effort.

     

    About the basic member thing. This could be a way to allow Basic members to award favourite points.

     

    Unlike niraD, I will favourite the cache if it shows me something cool, has nice camo or requires an effort to get to (not just if it's in my top ~10%)

    For my all time favourites I bookmark them in my "More than Favourites list"

    I currently use my iPhone3GS and it works well but unfortunately drains the battery like no other, so...

    I have looked at the above mentioned units and like what I see, so thank you.

     

    That being said, I am looking to spend around $200 for a beginner unit...

    suggestions?

    A few years ago I struck it lucky and grabbed an Oregon 300 for $200

    Don't know the range too well now but the new etrexs look promising
