  1. Carl, be sure you put the GPX file in X:\\Garmin\GPX. Then, check your zoom settings in the Map-Setup-Zoom menu. The default setting on the newer Garmins is set really low, so caches only show up on the map if you zoom all the way in. To change that, set the Geocache setting in the Zoom menu to 'Auto'. Thank you! I looked all over the Garmin support website for this answer. Makes no sense that you don't set the geocaching zoom level in the geocaching menu, so I wasn't seeing this option until you pointed me to it.
  2. We are aware of the bug with the caches along a route form. The engineering team has already fixed the issue and it will be released ASAP. Based on another post in the Release Announcement Forum, looks like this issue has been addressed and should be fixed soon (hopefully).
  3. I was trying to generate a pocket query along a route, but have been unable to get a query to return any results as I am unable to enter the search radius and number of caches to find in the PQ page. The fields are missing. I went back and looked at old PQ's along a route, where I had previously defined those parameters, and they were missing as well. I tried in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge- both were missing the fields.
  4. I also do not like the Challenge concept as it pertains to the geocaching website- I think this would be more appropriate for Waymarking. Any way you go about it though, please have Challenges reviewed prior to publishing. Otherwise, what's to stop anyone from saying "Go to these coords and find the box that I hid" because they couldn't get their local reviewer to publish it? We're going to see a lot of inappropriate/dangerous/commercial challenges that could potentially give geocaching a bad name. I also do not plan on using this feature of the website. The community wanted Virtuals back, not Challenges, and this was just an attempt at a substitute. I'm ok with their being no virtuals if means Challenges go away completely. I bet there are many other cachers out there who feel the same.
  5. Agree. Please remove the avatars from the cache pages and return the correct actual dates. Me Three. Dates back and avatars removed please.
  6. Thanks everyone for the useful information. I tried renaming the file name to gmapsup1.img but the oregon didn't recognize it. I've already been renaming the files and putting them in different folders like a few other posters have suggested- guess that will have to be my work around for now. I wish I had know about this problem before buying an 8GB card- I would have bought two 4 GB cards!
  7. So there's no way to have multiple files with different names? I understand that the files can't be larger than 4 GB, but are there different names for the files I could use to have two 4 GB files on 1 SD card? (and both readable by the Oregon)
  8. I'm trying to upload maps to my Oregon 300. I've got topo maps for all the US, CN NA, Metroguide Europe, and some 3rd party Germany topo. The problem I'm running into is that when I try to send the map data to my 8 GB SD card, mapsource will limit me to 4GB of data. So, I tried selecting all the maps on one or two products and sending them, then changing the name of the .img file on the SD card so I could upload the next 4GB of mapdata. The problem is, my Oregon 300 won't recognize the file unless it's named "gmapsupp.img". I have two sets of "gmapsupp.img" files saved on my GPS- one on the internal memory and one on the SD card that are readable. On the internal memory, there are other .img files (gmapbmap.img & gmaptz.img) that supply the basemaps. My question is, are there any other .img file names that can be used on the SD card so that I can upload two mapsets (for a total sum file size greater than 4GB)? I've tried gmapsupp1.img, etc... but the Oregon 300 will only read the file specifically named "gmapsupp.img". If there aren't any other file names that will work, does anyone know of a way to upload more than 4 GB of mapdata? Thanks.
  9. I asked an "official" person to be the 3rd party and to help intervene, and basically I got told that it's not their place to and won't. I agree with you- he's a thief. Problem is, we have no police with jurisdiction and no incentive to make the guy play right.
  10. I've seen a lot of people release laminated pictures of their geocoins... that way if someone steals it no big deal, just print out another and start over again. Keep the original in your collection! Most people think paper copies of geocoins are lame. See this thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=197664 They are lame, but I still don't blame people for resorting to that...

  12. Interesting take on all of this- I like it.
  13. Did you edit this to count your NAH NAH's?? Like I said before, I'm not out to go after people, I dont' have time for that. I'm just suggesting an easy way for cachers to be more accountable for the TBs and coins they move.
  14. I understand all that you said Eartha, however the TB horder in question is not new to the game. He's logged and moved on 100s of TBs... he just keeps geocoins. He's logged 2500+ caches. I agree we need to teach new cachers how to log TBs, and if was the case that a new guy found my coin and didn't move it along, I would never be here writing on this forum, shown by the fact that my other 7 TBs that are missing never motivated me to come here. I know you're only a volunteer, not TB police. I just wish Groundspeak would try harder to help protect people's TBs- I've listed a suggestion and so have others. The end result from this is that less people will release TBs and coins in the wild, and less people will purchase TBs from Groundspeak. I personally won't buy a TB again, not because I'm trying to make a point or be rude, just because the $6 investment isn't worth it anymore. It's a shame that it's come that far and that when someone tries to offer a solution other cachers automatically think you're on a witchhunt. Owning trackables isn't fun for me anymore so I won't do it. So I'm over it. My coin is gone. I get it. I'm not going to email that guy anymore (which was never nothing but polite), and I'm not going to buy anymore TBs or release any coins. I will, however, be respectful of other people's TBs and coins and move them along.
  15. I think your compromise is a good one, considering most people think making your TB inventory public is akin to airing your dirty laundry. I think I made the mistake of trying to make a joke in the title of this thread by saying "so we can see who's hording our TBs..." I forget that nobody on here knows me and you can't tell tone of voice on a web post! I understand that when you release a TB or geocoin out into the wild, it's probably gone forever. No heart burn there. I also understand that people, no matter what features we implement, we steal them or keep them and find a clever way to hide it. I have heart burn about that but I'll live. Like I said earlier, I was just trying to think of a way to keep honest people honest... not start the Spanish Inquisition. Of course there will always be valid reasons, accidents, mistakes, whatever that may preclude you from moving on a TB in a timely manner of your choosing, I think all cachers understand that. Honestly, I really doubt that if you do have a public TB inventory, that random people will email you saying "you need to move along so-and-so's TB, you've held it too long." People don't realistically care enough about other people's TBs to do that unless they have a vested interest in a TB. I think having a public inventory isn't as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be- there will be no witch hunts or vigilantes led by the majority of cachers. There are always a few though that might... probably about the same number of cachers that steal TBs and geocoins.
  16. So if someone takes my geocoin and won't even acknowledge my one or two emails to please move it along after 10 months, do I have any other recourse? Or is that, that? I think all cachers are frustrated when they invest in a trackable and someone decides to make it part of their personal collection.... especially when their collection is made up of 27 other cacher's coins. Is Groundspeak's position on TB hording that it has no position? That it's only a private matter? Would they consider taking any kind of action to discourage TB hording? I'm not trying to start a witch hunt. I don't have the time or energy to hound other cachers about TBs. I barely have the time to keep up with my two that aren't missing.
  17. I'd probably start with contacting a moderator in the geocoin/TB section. But there is always contact@Groundspeak.com I'm not sure how long it will take to get a response from there. If you decide to contact them about this issue, will you keep us updated please? Oh, ok. I thought there was an actual webpage form you could fill out to file a complaint or something from your post.
  18. You can report this? where?? Nag screen would work well, wouldn't need to come active until 3-6 months after you pick up the TB. As far as accounts being suspended, I'm reminded of XBOX Live where cheaters who hacked the internet gaming system had their account points reduced to zero and were forced to start over, and their account page forever has a note saying why they were busted. In the teen community this is an effect technique, however, most of the geocaching community is adults who know better already and will probaby continue to geocache anyways, but now they're upset so they just muggle caches and steal TBs and geocoins to get back at the world. How horrible would that be?
  19. If you were able to see that a new cacher had a large inventory of TBs, you the experienced cacher could offer your assistance to instruct how to move them along tactfully. That's how I learned to move my first TB along! Hopefully, we would all use our discretion not to just seek out people who've held a bug too long just to nag them. I know that circumstances arise where TBs can't be moved on, or mistakes are made and the TB is misplaced... that happens to everyone at one point, including myself. The point I'm trying to make is that when you display your TB inventory publically, it will help keep honest people honest. Dishonest people will continue to steal our TBs and geocoins. Honest people will know that their peers can see their inventory and hopefully that will keep them moving TBs along instead of hording a bunch without good reason.
  20. It's not that I want to troll around and bust people. I don't have time for that and neither do most people... I hope. But, when someone logs my cache I tend to look at their profile if I have time. Knowing that someone might do the same when I log their cache, I'd want to make sure I didn't keep 28 geocoins for over a year because then the local geocaching community would be justified to start sending me at first polite then nagging emails to move the along. So far everyone that's read this post things I'm conducting a witchhunt, when actually my intent was to provide cachers with a way to be accountable for the TBs they log. People will still steal TBs and geocoins. There is nothing we can do about it, sadly. However, making your inventory public will help you hold yourself accountable to move it along. Of course some people are going to have circumstances where they can't move a TB along. That should be evident on their public profile by seeing that they haven't been logging cachers. However, when someone logs 2500+ caches in the 10 months they've had your geocoin and 27 others, you know that they're just stealing and not a beginner who's having problems moving a bug along.
  21. Its not that I want to be a TB vigilante, it's that I don't want to become one. I'm hoping that if there are no secrets about how many bugs you have and for how long you've had them, you might do the right thing and move them along. There are many ways to steal geocoins and TBs.... sock puppet accounts, just not logging them, etc. There is no perfect solution to people stealing TBs and Geocoins, if you have a better idea I'd love to hear it. I'm particularly motivated by a particular cacher who's had a geocoin of mine for almost 10 months without moving it, ignoring my emails, etc. When I did the research, turns out he has 28 geocoins of other cachers in his inventory that he's had for many months and years. I've contacted some of the owners, and they've had no luck with this guy either. He attends a lot of event caches, so if the local community saw how many TBs he had in his possession they may be able to politely intervene.
  22. click on my link in the previous post and you'll see that thread. Thanks!
  23. If you think my idea of being able to view another cacher's TB inventory is a good one, please go here to say so. Thanks!
  24. I'd like to suggest adding the ability for cachers to be able to view another cacher's travel bug inventory on that cacher's public profile. Right now you can only see your TB inventory on your account page, and if you want to see what other TBs another cacher has in his/her possession you have to do a lot of research through the public profile's trackable items tab. Here's my reasoning: Some cachers have been known to horde TBs. They can log them for their profile and them keep them for months/years. They get away with this because the only person who can readily see that the cacher hasn't moved their bug in months is the TB owner. I've been involved in a forum discussion on what to do with other cachers who horde TBs (TB horders) and I believe the consensus is that the only way other cachers will feel pressured to move along TBs in a timely manner would be from peer pressure from their local community. Receiving multiple emails from a guy in a different state/country/continent as the case may be to ask politely that you move along his TB just doesn't carry any weight, whereas the people who geocache locally with the TB horder would see that they were hording the bugs easily and would be able to ask them face to face at the next event to move them along, or perhaps a friendly email from them would carry more weight. I don't think this would be a hard feature to incorporate- the information is already available and displayed the My Account page, it would just be a matter of also displaying it on your public profile.
  25. The cache site already alerts you if you have been holding a trackable for more than two weeks. Maybe a nag o gram email reminder could be put in place. Once a week to start, then daily after a period of time, then hourly after a longer period of time... Yes but you're the only person who sees it. I'm not talking about on the "My Account" page, I mean the list of TBs you have in your possession should appear on your public profile (the page with your email address, picture, etc...) so that other cachers can quickly look and see how many TBs you're hording, I'm mean, holding onto and if you've been moving them or not.
