I've had my Meriplat for about a year, and I think it's great. I use it a lot for kayaking, and driving, (don't look at it while moving). Got mine at GPS Discount back when they were doing the rebate thing for $255 minus $50 rebate which I had no problems with. Delivered from CO, to CT four days after I ordered it. Good luck!

When I start the engine of my Explorer, the voltage output of the inverter is zero for about 2-3 seconds. I think this would be a disaster for my laptop. Windows does not do well when you lose power.
-
I have been using my laptop only with the engine running. I see at least one person leaves their computer on while starting, and stopping the engine. I have a '02 Ford Ranger PU, that has the cigarette lighter plus one accessory plug. Both go to 0 voltage for a few seconds when the engine is started. Guess I'll wire up something direct to the battery.

Apparently didn't carry all the way through. Go to support-installation guide-XP, or whatever system you have.

Ran across this at the DeLorme site. Thought it might be useful for those wanting to install new stuff with Win XP. http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe.js....delorme.com%2F I will give a holler about how the Earthmate works in my PU shortly. Frank

I don't really know where, or to whom I should post this, so I'll put it here. Recently when I post some kind of warn box comes up that seems to indicate I have posted no messages. I don't have many that have been posted, that's true, only 22. My page also says that I am a premium member, which used to show when I posted something, but no longer does. I have not changed anything, my email, and user name have remained the same. Confused??

I got an APC inverter/convertor? at Best Buy for $49. It is 12V to 120V, 75 watt. Works fine with my Gateway .

I would like to get a USB Serial adapter to use with my laptop, and Magellan Meriplat. I have seen prices from $112, to $29. Magellan has one for $42. I was wondering if any one works better than another, and what is a good source at a reasonable price. Thanks, Frank

Does turning off the compass in my MeriPlat effect any other screens, or info such as COG? Thanks

Sorry, Tempest went to the wrong group, and the the forum masters won't let me delete it.

At a recent open house, I had the opportunity to try a few bigger, and better (??) boats. I took the Necky Looksha IV, the Necky Elaho DS, and the Wilderness Systems Tempest 165 (all rotomold) for a ride. The Elaho DS has a huge skeg. I thought the Tempest was the steadist of the bunch. Tough to tell which was the fastest. The Elaho was the best carver, but felt very unstable to me. I am in my second year of paddling, and currently have a WS Cape Lookout 145. I think it's a good boat, but would like something a bit quicker and more agile. I went to the review section and found only one other person who has experience with the Tempest. I would appreciate any guidance. I plan to get either a FG, or Kevlar model, tired of the dents, and the weight. BTW, I'm 5'10", 160 lbs. Thanks

Check the contacts inside the battery compartment. Sometimes they get a bit crunched, especially on the + side, and don't make a good contact. You may need to pull them out a bit.

quote:Originally posted by hipsterdoofus:Hello there fellow meridian users. I am taking a trip soon and want to see about getting something to mount my meridian in a car. I have seen 2 possible options. One of them lists itself as just a swivel mount...I am not sure what it mounts to...it says it can mount to a dash but i don't understand how it does that. The other option is the suction cup mount. The "swivel mount" i have seen for as low as like $14.95...the suction cup mount is insanely expensive..i've seen it for OVER $50! That seems a little steep to me seeing as how i barely paid over $200 for my GPS...anyway, if someone could give me some insight on these..or offer other alternatives if they exist. Thanks HipsterDo0fus -Edmond, OK I have the suction cup Magellan mount (#701241) in my Ranger pickup. In addition to being able to clip a power cable in from a lighter plug, I think it is great. It just snaps into the mount and is powered. It appears to be well designed, and has been holding my MeriPlat for over a month with no sign of coming loose. I got it after I bought the unit, so I had to pay a solo shipping charge. It arrived at my door four days after ordering from GPS Discount.com, for $39.17 total. Subsequently, I bought a mount for my motorcycle at the local West Marine store, and found it to be the best deal around

A few days ago there were a few posts about customizing, and adding EPE to a display line. Even though it is not listed in the manual as one of the 13 options available, it is there. I put it in the compass screen in place of speed. Now all I have to do is find out what it really is> Any comments, or sites with information? Thanks, Frank

Magellan Meridian Platinum Accuracy
dencor replied to GPS_Brian's topic in GPS technology and devices
How do you customize a screen to display EPE? Sounds like a good idea. I don't see it in the list of 13 available options in the customize list. Of course that doesn't mean anything, I'm pretty new at this stuff, and have a lot to learn. Thanks, Frank -
I configured my NS 7, and EasyGPS now can open the downloads from the cache list. Each time I download one, it opens in a new window by itself. Doesn't look right to me, so I must be doing something ?? Thanks for any help,,Frank

Thanks, Looks like another waterproof layer. I don't do WW, but I do use a skirt (on the boat) once in a while. Can you operated the buttons through the clear front?
-
My Platinum should arrive 6-5, I plan to use it on my WS Cape Lookout 145. I was wondering what kind of system you kayakers are using to mount the GPS. I plan to have it in clear bag, but would like to have something better than a cord around my neck. Thansk

Thanks again for the helpful, and informative advice, I ordered the Magellan Meridian Platinum today. From what I can determine on the Magellan site, the manual is on the CD only (I downloaded it from the site). If my assumption is correct, it doesn't make me too happy. I can't see myself in East Goombah, or somewhere lugging around a 100+ page of manual from my printer. Are there any alternatives available?

Tomorrow I plan to order my first GPS. I have been looking at the the Magellan Meridian Platinum,, and the SportTrak Pro. I looks like the Pro has a slightly larger screen.Does the larger built in data of the Platinum give more detail, or just more info? The difference at GPS Discount is about $31, which is not an issue. I will be using the unit for kayaking, some hiking, on my MC, and car. Any last words of wisdom before I make the leap. Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks to the many who replied to my query. Informative, and helpful, as usual!

I am looking for a Platinum. So far I have found it at GPS Discount.com for $255. I don't know anything about the company, or if this is the best deal along with decent customer service. Appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

Is there a place where I can see images of the basemaps loaded with the Garmin Vista, or GPS Map 76S? I have looked around, especially at the Garmin site, and have found lots of other images, but none of the basemaps. Thanks, Frank
