  1. I never would have even thought of that, Thanks for the link Cardinal!
  2. If someone that actually knows the answer to this question could please respond, that would be helpful . thanks!
  3. I had a question / suggestion regarding pocket queries. With many of the newer GPS units being able to store 1000 (and more with SD cards) waypoints, would an increase of PQ size to 1000 be out of the question? I realize we can run 5 searches in a day, but for my needs I would rather run one 2500 query per day or at least have the option of one day running one 2500 , and the next day two 1250, and the next one five 500 item searches...and so on. Also as a general comment on pocket queries, it seems like they are a little hidden in terms of navigation. It is such an important feature, I would want to put it in a more visable spot. (I just go to /pocket, but it took the forums to show me that). Anyhow, I have only joined a few days ago, and have found a couple of caches already...my girlfriend really is enjoying this as well. Awesome job on the web site..Keep up the great work! Mantis7
  4. I wasn't sure where to ask this question...so here goes.. I see on GSAK theres a spot for "user notes" which is really useful. Anyone know if these can be exported into a garmin 76CS? I tried writing some test notes and they didnt seem to be..... I appreciate any help... (Did a forum search and came up empty)
  5. I love computers. So for me it is no big deal to log finds etc... But, the person who recruited me into geocaching (which I am fairly new to) and took the time to take me out caching, show me how to use my GPS, and showed a HUGE amount of respect and enthusiasm for this sport doesn't log his finds. Well, he signs the logbooks, but he doesnt log them here on geocaching.com. I guess I can see both sides, but if they are making good trades, moving travel bugs, being respectful of the surroundings, and spreading the love of the game...I see no harm in not electronically logging the finds. What you could do if you have the time, is scan all of the written log book pages and make them available as images of your cache. That would seem to balance both of your needs / wishes. Good Luck!
  6. Edit: Funny, both the 76 CS, and the 76C have the USB port...but the 76S appears not to...
  7. I would be interested in joining / buying coins also if space opens up. Let me know!
  8. If you look closer, though...the note says "placed in xxx cache at xxx coordinates" which doesnt happen when you post a note. Maybe they manually typed that in and accidentally posted the note? In either case, I'm not going to wait because this bug has been stationary for so long. I'm just going to use your advice, and make sure this bug gets the miles. Thanks.
  9. I have found a travel bug, that (according to the web site) is still in the hands of another member. The funny thing is, that member "placed" it into the correct cache, but the "place" shows up as just a "note" right now. So, my only option is to "grab" it from that user. I don't think this is correct, so I am waiting for the note to show up as a "place." Is this normal or is something wrong? Here is the reference (not actual travel bug number) RE: TDB3E6 (Stunod / Webfoot Connection) owner: webfoot. Click here to go directly to this travelbug notice that the top note says "placed" BUT still shows in their inventory PS: If something is wrong, what I could do is grab it from the user, place it into the cache myself, and then grab it myself from the cache....(would this be ok?) (Excuse my ignorance if this is covered somewhere else, this is my 1st travelbug and I tried to look in the forums to no avail)
  10. I ordered City Selct from amazon.com and got it in 3 business days with no probelms... Cheers!
  11. Granted Ive only had my WAAS enabled GPSr for a few hours...(Just long enough to do the updates, download my maps & waypoints, and find two caches before dinner) BUT... My GPSr came with WAAS disabled as a default, and as soon as I turned it on I noticed an increase in the accuracy and the "jumpiness" of the distance from cache.... Like I said this is only after a few hours of playing with it, but it seemed to make a difference to me. Edit: 76 CS
  12. Thanks for the very excellent reply , Peter! I have purchased city select, and I think I will fork out the extra cash for the 1:24,000 topo for the WEST. If I ever do any exploration in other parts I guess I will have to shell out more $$$. It's 3:45 PM local time, and I'm still waiting for my GPSr to arrive via UPS..... Hopefully I will do some caching tonight!
  13. Any idea on what the 60 CS and 76 CS resolutions are anyone? Also, are the Magellan TOPO maps in 1/24,000 like garmin has available? What would make for a better topo map and how would you find out which is better? (I'm assuming the answer to the last question is more accurate maps with more , smaller details - if so, is there any unbiased way to find out which is better?)
  14. Very good point WW. I too wonder about the differences in the software / service. Since they use different maps, there must be differences.... I have heard great things about the Garmin City Select series (it should arrive at my door any minute, /drool). Also, Garmin has some AWESOME Topographical maps. For example the standard topo map they sell is 1/100,000 but if you want to shell out some extra cash they have a 1/24,000 topo graphical map. Plus their screen being larger, and having 256 colors is very nice for topo displays. As far as the magellan maps/service goes...I am not up on it so I will let the others chime in. The one thing i can say is that my brother in law has a magellan and loves it, so either way you'll have a blast!
  15. No problem! I hope that which ever GPS you buy will serve you well! Here is Geocaching.com's definition: Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. Here is mine: People with GPS units hide little (or big!) containers all over the WORLD. They get the coordinates with their GPS units, and post the coordinates on geocaching.com. Other GPS users see the coordinates of these containers (caches) and go try to find them! When you find one: sign the logbook, if you take something out of the cache, leave something cool in return. If you choose to, you can also keep track of how many / which ones you have found on geocaching.com Take care!
  16. To you, it might be. To me (and those who won't even use the full 115 Megs) it isnt any more useful. In fact, its LESS useful to me because I have to go out and buy an SD card, and worry about losing it, getting it wet, etc..... I would think that the SD card feature is really only useful if you do A LOT of long distance travelling or changing maps. And even then, a laptop / usb connector is still better (given that you have a laptop in your vehicle).
  17. Heres some more differences: Magellan500/600 --------------- 500 waypoints internal / unlimited via SD cards Display : 1.4 inches x 1.8 inches (16 color) (Backlit???? Does anyone know??) Resolution of display: 120 x 160 (16 color) (anyone confirm this?) 17 Hour max. Battery Life via LI-Ion Battery (rechargable) the 600 Has the compass 500 doesn't (barometer / elevation rate of descent??) 14 Parellel Channel GPS receiver Antenna: (???? I couldnt find this - anyone know?) Memory: 8 Meg Internal, Unlimited via SD card purchase Sink or float? (anyone know?) (it is water resistant) Topo Map: 3d / 1:100,000 scale ~$100.00 (no 1:24,000 available yet) Garmin 76CS ----------------------- 1000 Waypoints internal Display 1.5 x 2.2 inches (256 Color) With LED BAcklight Resolution of display 160 x 240 (256 color) 20 max. Hour battery life on standard AA battery Has compass / barometer/ elevation / rate of descent.. 12 Paralell Channel GPS receiver Antenna: Quad Helix Memory 115 meg internal - Cant use SD cards Floats / water resistant Topo Map 1:100,000 scale and 1:24,000 (1:24k more expensive and only for certain areas) Theres probably more differences that are important but I need some food. I'll try and fix the ???'s when I get the confirmed info.
  18. Ahh I guess i just assumed something floating on top of the water would be more water resistant than something that sank to the bottom....MY BAD...
  19. and at tigerGPS.com the list price price (before rebate) is $460.00 for the 76CS.... i guess they mustve gotten a better deal from magellan?
  20. Explorist 500: 2.2 x 4.7 x 1.3 (inches) ---- 5.3 ounces (with batteries) Garmin 76CS 2.7 x 6.2 x 1.4 (inches) ---- 7.6 ounces The garmin is half an inch wider, about an inch and a half longer and more or less the same thickness. The internal memory of the explorist is only 8 mb, but you can use SD memory cards. These cards (of course) cost money. The internal memory of the 76 CS is 115 Megabytes (actually 15 times that of the explorist 500 ;-P), but you can't use cards...on the flip side 115 megabytes is alot of memory. EDIT: Prices are changing but as of 10:00 am march 23rd 2005, you can get BOTH the explorist500 and the 76CS by garmin for $319.00 from various retailers. (The explorist500 is $319 at tigergps.com and the 76cs is $319 (after mail in rebate/and 30$ credit card sign up discount) at amazon.com ) They may be available cheaper elsewhere, but I haven't seen it.....and if the price changes again I'm not editing this post LOL. This is a very hard choice, so good luck! I guess the main reason I went with the 76CS is i didnt really care about the extra little bit of size , and SD cards aren't necessary for me (especially with 115 MB of internal memory). In all reality, I really don't see how you can go wrong with either of the units. Again, good luck on your decision.
  21. Just to let you know, the 76CS does have a list price of $589.99 BUT it is on sale! You can get it, BRAND NEW for your target price of under $350.00. If you go to amazon.com, and add it to your cart it will come up on sale for $399.99, and garmin has a $50.00 mail-in rebate going on right now, which would bring the price to $349.99 meeting your goal. In addition, they also have another 30$ off if you sign up for their credit card. Also, Amazon has FREE shipping on this item (or you can pay like $14.00 for 2-day air). (sorry i cant make the link work, will try later) (PS: I bought mine on saturday (online) and they had my tracking number to me and the item shipped on monday, less than 1 business day later. They are a great company to work with.)
  22. Also one more alternative: The 76CS has double the memory of the 60cs (Like 115MB) and is more water resistant. You can pick up the 76CS right now for not that much more than the price of a 60CS (actually for less than the price of a 60cs from some sellers). The deal that I saw (and bought) is from Amazon.com....It is on sale for $399.99 and then theres a 50$ mail in rebate (which is also available on the 60cs). In addition , if you are willing to sign up for their credit card you get $30.00 more off. Also, it is free shipping/handling. So this would bring the total price down to $319.99 (or $349 if you didnt want the credit card offer) INCLUDING shipping/ handling. ] Here is.... A link to the 76 CS on amazon I bought mine on saturday (they are closed sat and sun) and had my tracking number on monday! (Less than one business day later) (I paid $14.00 for 2-day air because i am impatient) and they are delivering today. GREAT service.
  23. Maybe it's just me, and I hope this doesn't offend anyone but here goes.... I personally find the "only dopes do dope" and intolerance of marijuana smokers/smoking pathetic. I guess those people think that legal drugs (alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and a countless amount of prescription and OTC drugs) are somehow O.k. because the government says so, and marijuana isn't because it is against the law. To me, it is the law that is broken. Marijuana should not be classed as a narcotic (with cocaine and heroine) as it is now. Many states are in the process of legalizing / decriminalizing it. Ironically, I find these kinds of people (who say "only dopes do dope" and "you must have mental problems to smoke pot") more of an annoyance than some kid who vandalizes a cache. The kid vandalizing a cache is at least understandable. The intollerance and ignorance of the "educated" adults is not understandable to me. my 2 cents
  24. Amazon.com - Especialy if you are considering a garmin 76cs (I havent priced many of the other units there). The price they charge for it is 399.99, then there is $50.00 rebate, then (if you choose) another $30.00 instant rebate for signing up for an amazon credit card. This brings the total price down to $319.99. Oh did I mention that Shipping / Handling is FREE on this unit. Or, if you want UPS second day air (if youre like me and cant wait an extra few days) it is only about $14.00. I ordered my unit on saturday (the 19th) and had my ups second day air tracking number on monday!!! (Not even a full business day later). I'm just waiting for the knock on the door now! EDIT: Oh - i forgot if you happen to be in amazon's preferred club (I don't remember the name) then second day air is FREE on everything you buy! I think I am gonna join.
