  1. Welcome aboard. You should be fine with the Iphone. When you get close to the cache, you should put the phone away and start the search for the cache. Look around, where would you hide the cache. Look for man made signs, foot prints, crossed sticks, unusual piles of rocks or sticks. Expand you search out in a circle around where the phone thinks the cache is. All gps devices have some error and can be off 20- 30 ft. It will not take you directly to the cache every time. Start with large size caches first untill you get the hang of finding them. The small and micro caches can be very difficult to find, they can be very well hidden. You will get better with a few finds, once you know what to expect. See if you can meet up with some local cachers for a few finds. It wouldn't be fun if some were not hard to find. Even after a couple hundred found I get stumped. There are a bunch i've been back to 4 or 5 times before i found them. Good luck
  2. You can download the waypoints from the website and use free EasyGPS software to load them to your gps. Here is a link to the software, it's what I used when I had a 60cxs: EasyGPS Software
  3. Welcome aboard. I got my wife addicted last year. She has almost caught up with me. It's getting like a competition. We were out yesterday and found 23 in a great park in RI. Great for seeing new places.
  4. Welcome aboard. It's very addicting. I managed to get my wife and kids addicted. Good Hunting!!
  5. The LOC file is used with a program named EasyGPS to download multiple waypoints to a lot of different gps's. The software is free and saves you making a mistake while typing. The software can be downloaded here: GPS Software
  6. Try taking out any memory card and powering up.
  7. A regular can be anthing from a large lock&Lock(Tupperware) to an ammo box usually easy to find, only so many place to hide a larger object. A small is usually a smaller lock&lock(tupperware) or army decon box, little harder to find, easyer to hide. A micro is can be as small as a dime up to a 35mm film can. Very easy to hide and a lot harder to find. If your caching in town you will see a lot of micros, once you find a few it becomes a lot easier. I have a micro in a cemetery that is a dime sized magnet on a wraught Iron fence and a lot of people have trouble with it even thought the coords are right on. Some people pick it right out. Cam you hook up with some locals and go out with them a few times. Once you see a few it gets much easier.
  8. Welcome Aboard. Pick regular or large caches to start. No GPS will bring you right to the cache. When you get to what you thinkis the location put the gps away and start searching. Look for places you would hide a cache, look for signs of others searching, slowly expand your search in a larger circle(All gps have a certian amount of error) so be prepared to look in a larger area. Don't give up, sometimes it helps to back away from the area and approach again with the GPS. Some times it takes me several trips to find a difficult cache. You can also email the cache owner for a further hint.
  9. Welcome aboard. Part of the challange is finding out where to park and approach the cache. On the cache page at the bottom is a link to geocaching with google maps. If you click on the link a google map will come up showing you the cache, all near by roads, and also other near by caches. I usually find the nearest road and get as close to the cache as possible. From there it's all up to the GPS.
  10. You can submit the cache listing without the Is Active check box checked. This way you can see the page and make changes without the reviewers looking at it. When it's all set just check the box and save the changes and the reviewers will review it for you.
  11. I use GCStatistic V1.7.1 by MacDefender. Its a cool program that will do most of the work for you including uploading the updated stats. It's free and can be downloaded here: [cachestats]
  12. I upgrade to the 550 from an oregon 300. I'm realy happy so far. The new compass works great, I used to have to calibrate the 300 compass all the time. I find my self taking more pictures, much easier than taking out the phone. Also 5000 cache limit is an improvement over the 300. The screen is definatly easier to read although the 300 screen never realy bothered me. I have done over 500 caches so far with the 550, it's definatly a caching machine. I use the 24k northeast topo maps, the roads are routable and have lots of detail. Garmin is realy good about updating the software. I try to stay up with the latest version. I did get one bad beta version but i just loaded an older version to recover. My wife is using the 300 and it's easy to xfer caches back and forth. It's a lot harder on the batteries than the 300 when using the camera. Plan on getting good rechargables and a good charger. I always carry spare batteries but can usually get a full days caching with one set. Over all it's a good unit. Forgot to say welcome aboard. It's an addiction.
  13. It works in firefox but not in IE 8. Definatly a bug.
  14. Some of the best times I've had with my kids have been Geocaching road trips. We did a numbers run last labor day weekend to Maine. We drove 8 hrs to get there and then did 85 caches before finding a hotel. They had a ball.
  15. It works in Firefox but not IE 8. Looks like a bug.
  16. Sorry you had a bad experiance. Swag in caches tend to go down hill over time. Owners are supposed to maintain thier caches over time but its tough to keep the swag up. When I go out it's not to trade, I'm out for the adventure of the hunt, seeing new places, getting some exersize. My kids used to love to go for the swag but as they have grown now they are like me, it's the hunt. I like a good challenge and enjoy difficult micros now. An underwater cache would be cool. We have one in my area that I havn't attemped yet. I go kayak caching all the time.
  17. I cache alone all the time. I started caching as a way to get back in shape after a bout of CHF. Now I have my wife hooked. We go out together all the time. I still get out by my self once in a while.

  19. I got it this weekend. I created a mapset for the entire coverage area and it took up 4gb on an 8gb stick. The detail is great, the roads and trails are routable, and the map is not locked to one gps. Much more detail than the free maps and the roads are accurate. A good purchase.
  20. Does any one know if they are locked to one GPS? We have 2 in the family and I'd like to use them with both.
  21. You cannot always count on GPS to be 100% accurate. A typical consumer GPS will have an error of 20-30 feet. The guy who placed the cache also had an error. So when the GPS said you are at GZ you are probibly within 40 feet of the cache. When you start out you should pick larger cache sizes and easy difficulty untill you get used to how people hide the caches. Micro caches can be very difficult to find at first. When you get to GZ put the gps away and start looking, ask yourself where would I hide the cache? Look in a wider circle. Read the hint, can help some times. Also read the past logs, sometimes people give clues. Stop looking when it stops being fun and move on to the next. Some difficult caches itmay take more than on trip to locate. Have fun and welcome.
  22. It is assumed the cache owner has permissions if the cache is published. This may not be the case all the time, people don't always ask for permissions. If I don't feel comfortable I don't do the cache. Thats all you can do.
  23. On the main page click on My profile, then on the right side pick My Account Details. In there you can post a profile picture and an avatar.
  24. Been caching since 2002 on and off. I was a slow starter due to health problems. Did the bulk of my caches in the last 2 years. I post now and then in reply to others and rarely start a thread. Geocaching is my way to get out relieve stress and get some exersize. It helped me through some really tough health problems. I've always been happiest in the woods, I'm a bit of a loner. As my kids say I'm the sketchy guy in the woods.
