  1. There have been years of threads that have solved my issue. In fact, I had it working last year but now it's not again. Can I use the mini-usb to connect to a Mac USB now? If so, what driver? MacCaching does not recognize my GPS via usb. I also have a USB-Serial converter, but my driver must be old. Bottom line, I can't upload/download from my Mac G3 to my Garmin GPS 60 anymore! Anybody, please help!
  2. Fellow Macintosh lovers, I downloaded the serial driver as referenced on web site at http://www.mct.com.tw/driver.html (very BOTTOM of page) but after installation it gave an error message on restart & the GPS would not use the USB/Serial connection to communicate- I found the help I needed to make changes to make it work after many searches and have included the step-by-step instructions below. After making these changes to the driver, it now appears as an option when communicating with the GPS & is identified as "USB Serial". These instructions may prove helpful to others. (my current configuration is: Garmin GPS 60, U232-P9 converter with serial-to-Garmin cable, iMac G3 using OSX 10.4.7 operating system) ****************** Go to Application/Utilities and launch the Terminal application. Now type: sudo su Then hit return. You will get a warning and then you type in your administration password and hit return. Do not type in your root password. Up will come the name of your hard drive followed by your user name and the characters root #. It will look something like this: userid:/Users/username root# Now type or paste the below line in and then hit return. chmod -R og-w /System/Library/Extensions/USBSerialDriver.kext Then type or paste the below line in and hit return. chown -R root:wheel/System/Library/Extensions/USBSerialDriver.kext You will then be shown the permissions and you are done. Quit the Terminal application and restart. You will no longer received the message that it was installed incorrectly and the driver will now work. Here is what your Terminal will look like following changes. Use this for reference. ****************** Last login: Mon Jan 19 18:42:24 on console Welcome to Darwin! userid:~ username$ sudo su Password: userid:/Users/username root# chmod -R og-w /System/Library/Extensions/USBSerialDriver.kext userid:/Users/user root# chown -R root:wheel/System/Library/Extensions/USBSerialDriver.kext usage: chown [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] owner[:group] file ... chown [-fhv] [-R [-H | -L | -P]] :group file ... userid:/Users/username root# ********************************
  3. ...anyone, in the know, have an idea of the status of GPSY update for Mac OSX? thanx
  4. I just bought the Digital Camera/Camcorder screen protectors for my 60CS from Radio Shack. The product number is 16-3687. Included are 4 universal self-adhesive protective films that can be cut to fit. 1 wet/dry cleaning wipe and 1 squeegee card which is nothing more than a credit-card like angled card with the RS logo with sharp ragged edges. Cost of the kit here was $5.97. I ended up with a few small bubbles but I'm not concerned because the screen is protected. Hope this helps. simple trick for custom fit: (I used, similar to yours, Fellowes WriteRIGHT PDA adhesive protector sheets) Take one and remove backing and cover GPS screen (bubbles not as important on sheet #1). Once it is applied, take a fine point Sharpie marker and trace exactly the outline you want to cut out. Remove this sheet that has the markings and before you trim, apply it to a clean sheet. Cut out along marker lines. When you separate, sheet #2 has no markings and fits exactly onto your GPS screen. On this one, you may want to squeegee out the bubbles.
  5. I'm not going to co-op the brotherhood and infest my Mac with VPC in order to get this to work! Why downgrade a superior machine & dumb it down just to make something that should be natural into something against the will of the Creator.
  6. Stantastic, You're right - I am using a USB/Serial converter cable connected to my iMac USB port. I was able to get the cable for ~$45 from pfranc.com vs. ~$70 elsewhere. I found a compatible USB/Serial driver on the web. I agree with you regarding using the Garmin GPS60's USB port with a direct USB connection! I am using MacGPSBabel 1.2.5, but it didn't work with my USB. Maybe I'll try it again.
  7. GPSBabel uses the USB with windows, but I'm using a Mac and MacGPSBabel. Everything that I read said that the Garmin USB Driver for Mac was not available and I needed the USB/Serial Driver and a serial converter to the USB on the computer..... Anyway... already have the serial USB converter connected to the USB on my Mac and MacGPSBabel works.......
  8. Got it to work. 1) pUSB32 cable from pfranc.com ($45 incl shipping) 2) GPSBabel latest version to upload/download waypoints 3) ?? wondering what software I might find to track routes, waypoints on map graphically... or if I even am going to miss it if I don't have it b-N-b
  9. ..posted both places. Thanks for your reply. I unfortunately have only the OSX 10.2.8 Jaguar version, not the Panther. Any hope for me except to shell out for a serial-to-USB cable? b-N-b
  10. Thanks. That program's profile looks like it will fit exactly what I want to do but.... I went to that website, but didn't see that it was compatible with the Macintosh OSX operating system, just Windows. I'll go back and check. ~~~~~~ Checked again, only in Windows format. It looks like GPSConnect will do for me what EasyGPS does for the non-Macintosh user, but it needs the file to be in GPX format.... I'm trying to get GPSBabel to convert the .LOC files to .GPX files. How far off track am I? (no pun intended)
  11. OK, I'm pretty techno savvy, but can't seem to get the right combination on this one. I'm hoping that I'm just having a bad day. Please help. Macintosh (iMac G3) w/ USB port Garmin GPS 60 w/USB cable Questions: Because geocacache.com downloads waypoints as .LOC files, apparently I must convert them to another format to upload to Garmin. 1) What options do I use (GPSBabel has a lot to choose from, but I am unfamliar with what to choose as the UPLOAD file format and the OUTPUT file format) - what suffix needs to be on the files that the Garmin needs uploading? 2) Once I have accomplished translating the .LOC to the proper format, do I then use GPSBabelto upload to the Garmin? 3) The only port listed in the GPSBabel is the 'modem' port. ??? Is this referring to the USB port for which I have a supplied cable? I've read many things on the Web to-date, but have not been able to find specifics enough to get me past this point, especially the 1st question which keeps me from going any further. If GPSBabel just listed its choices with SUFFIXES only, instead of descriptions it may be easier for me to make intelligent guess.

  13. Thanks! What are the primary advantages of mapping capability vs. just the base maps (especially as it relates to neophite usage). B-n-B
  14. Brand new empty nester with by best friend (wife of 25+ years) and have chosen Geocaching as our new back-together-again-without-kiddo hobby. In fact we haven't even ventured out the first time yet. After some web research and face to face with a savvy salesman, have ordered a Garmin GPS 60. Considering its specs and my wallet, it seemed like a good match. Basic Question: Opinion of all who care to comment regarding its comparison to other moderately priced units and especially vs. the Garmin 60CS Mapping. Thanks, b-N-b
