  1. I may have solved it Ku Thank you for the link to GPSRchive, I skimmed over anything that might look promising and one thing caught my eye - Filters. I went into filters in Geocaching and selected the show all filter and tada they are now showing up, have no idea what happened previously as I don't remember going into this in the first place to have altered anything but it seems to have done the trick.
  2. Thanks for that, I also connect via USB and then download and extract to the GPS file in Garmin but its only showing as waypoints and parking co-ords, no actual geocaches. As its working as it should with my Dakota 10 I am beginning to think there is something wrong with the GPS - it really shouldn't be this complicated. I may have to look into sending it back.
  3. I am tearing my hair out over this, been onto Garmin three times today and they have suggested various fixes but nothing is working, at what point do I think its the GPS and not the files itself. Interestingly I plugged my old Dakota 10 back in this afternoon and clicked 'send to Garmin' direct from the cache page on Geocaching.com and it worked perfectly pity the same thing is not working for the Oregon. How do I try loading over Wifi? Also downloaded Pocket query and list and they have both gone on to the Dakota fine, what is wrong or what have I done to the Oregon.
  4. The same thing is happening with my Oregon 700, whether I click on the send to Garmin in the actual cache page or if I download a pocket query. They are going onto my gps as waypoints. So I cleared out the waypoints on the GPS, downloaded the PQ and made sure to highlight both files and then clicked extract all on my Computer. I selected the Garmin, GPX folder, everything has still downloaded to my waypoints. So I spoke with Garmin this afternoon and they suggested that I use Basecamp so I downloaded and put in a local cache and then sent it to my GPS, nope still only on as a waypoint file.
  5. Thank you and that is where I have put them. luckily there was already one on there that I knew worked so just put it in the same place. I can see the GPX folder with the query in but its not showing up when I search for a geocache on the GPS just the original one. I realised this morning that its downloading them and storing them as waypoints on my gps which was why I couldn't find them. What have I done that's making it do this, whether I just send an individual cache to my Garmin or the PQ, did I change something without realising it.
  6. Just jumping on this thread. I did the pocket query and then it emailed it to me with a link to download, which I did and ended up with a zip file, I have no idea where to extract the file to in the Garmin folder, I thought it was in the GPX folder which I did but no caches come up on my GPS list.
  7. Several times now I have wanted to do a specific series of caches, at the moment a series of 25 started on 1st December, I can search and find a list of them but when I use display on map I get hundreds of caches displayed not just the ones I want. I also cannot seem to create a pocket query from this search list either. Anyone help or is it not possible. Thanks Tracy
  8. I checked the account settings and the box is ticked for weekly newsletters, the email address is correct but I don't get anything at all and stopped receiving stuff quite a few months ago.
  9. Hi It has been some months since I have been on these boards and I am having a problem with the new map searching thing which maybe someone can help me out. When you go into hide and seek and I always use the search by maps option but when the map comes up I cannot get the satellite view that I used to use not sure where to click to get this and also when I am searching for caches by area I now cannot see the place names or road names because all the little cache boxes are over the top of the map and as there are so many it virtually obliterates the map I keep clicking to zoom in and hoping that I am in the right place. Thanks for your help
  10. My premium member filters are greyed out on the front page, any idea why? I can hide my finds but thats all.
  11. It's very strange it's the only site that I am having problems with even the home page is taking ages to come up and when I eventually get the map of my home area its not showing my finds and there are even some missing on the page which I know should be there and I haven't found. The little cache symbols are not matching up with where they should be on the map (if that makes sense). I have never known it to be like this.
  12. Both yesterday and today I have been trying to register my finds after a weekend in York. Every time I try to go into a different page it takes about 3 minutes to come up. When the page comes up with the map showing all the caches they don't seem to be in the right place. It took me 20 minutes last night just to log one find, and its taken 10 just to post this. Any ideas??? I have been on to other websites since and they are loading instantaneously which is why I thought I would post the question here as it only seems to be a problem on Geocaching.com Tracy
  13. I set the PQ last night and set it to run on Sunday and couldn't understand why it still hadn't done it this morning but I forgot that the whole thing is set to PST time so when I was looking this morning it actually was not Sunday. It has just run as it has turned midnight and is now Sunday on the West Coast. Thanks for your replies.
  14. Hi To cut a long story short I am leaving the house for a week in about 1 hour and need to download a PQ to my GPS but can't seem to get it to run immediately, is there a way I can do this? Thanks
  15. Think I may have found the answer and I think it was something to do with the attributes I was excluding, so now I have to figure out which attribute it was.
  16. The only one that I normally tick in That is 'I haven't found' I tried going back and not setting any paremeters at all and it still missed off these caches. I think I shall have to run the query and then add to the GPS individually any that I think it has missed off.
  17. Hi I searched by google maps for caches around me and noticed amongst the many that there were a series of not too hard ones around a reservoir about 5 miles from me. I ran a pocket query to catch these and many others so that I could download them. When I checked the query after running this series and one other which I happened to notice were near me were not in the query. Now I have checked the query and other than virtual I said find all containers and set a difficulty/terrain level of 3.5. The ones missing were a variety of small and micro and difficulty/terrain of 1 up to 3.5, what is going wrong? Thanks for the help Tracy
  18. The other week we found a cache in a place which was overlooked by someones bedroom window and the ones either side of them as well and the thought crossed my mind. What if the person who hid this lives in that house? Can anyone see their cache from their house? do you find yourself watching it sometimes to see who finds it? Tracy
  19. When you choose 'log attempt' on the Dakota, it adds an entry to a file called geocache_visits.txt, that's in the Garmin folder when you connect the Dakota 10 to your computer. If you go here, http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx when your Dakota is connected, you can browse to the file on your garmin select this file and upload it to the site. After you've uploaded it : http://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx will show a list of the caches you marked as 'found', 'not found' etc on the Dakota. So you can go through them and log them on the site. The site will get the status and date from your upload (it will also upload any comment you added on the Dakota. Personally speaking, all I use the comment for is to add a reminder if, say, I've taken or dropped a TB or geocoin so I can remember which cache it was from) It depends what your PQ is. I use a PQ that selects 1000 caches nearest to my home coords that I haven't found. It's a fairly basic query (because, imo, the rest of the options are mostly guff anyway. e.g I can select caches with the cycling attrib and get caches that you can't cycle to and miss lots that you can. Similarly, cache size, terrain, and difficulty are all fairly arbitrary and meaningless ime) So, I figure you may as well just get as many caches as you can near where you want to go that you haven't found before, and do any extra filtering with your brain. The PQ interface is an ugly mess too imo, which doesn't help. So the most simple answer to your question is, the caches are in a file on your Dakota (if it's from a PQ it'll be called something like 4547574.gpx with the number corresponding to the zip file you get from the PQ page) If you delete or replace that file, the caches will be deleted or replaced en masse. You can't delete individual caches, just the whole file. Although you can have more than one file with caches stored in it on the Dakota if, for example, you have more than one PQ and want to copy both. But, presumably if your pocket query doesn't filter out found caches, then they will be on the Dakota (marked as found) when you copy it. It's all much easier to do than to describe I think. Perhaps not helped because the site doesn't do a very good job of presenting all these options. When I first bought premium membership I already knew all the features I now had access to, but I still found myself hunting for where they were amidst the mess of links and pointless guff (do I need to be told what GPS I own?) stuck on the rhs of your profile page. But persevere and you'll see you probably don't need a geocaching for dummies, it's something that's very simple that's just made to look more complicated than it is because of bad design. e.g The fields notes interface. You're supposed to find a link to upload your field notes by clicking a word at the end of this sentence "While Geocaching with the Garmin Colorado or Garmin Oregon you can upload your geocache finds directly from the device once you return back from your day geocaching. Click here to upload Field Notes from your Garmin Colorado or Garmin Oregon." ?!?! It's the interface equiv of "programmer art" in early games I think. It doesn't mention the Dakota either, but I hope they don't add any more words to correct it (because there are about 5 other similarly verbose sentences with hidden links in them on the same page) Yes, if you drag and drop the latest version of the query into the gpx folder before you go geocaching, you should have fairly up-to-date info (you can configure the site to email notifications to you if you want the very latest info) Thank you Needaxeo things are starting to become a little clearer
  20. Sorry forgot to say its a Garmin Dakota 10
  21. Hi I am up to 13 finds now and I am really enjoying going places that normally I wouldn't think to go or even know are there. I have some questions - what's the easiest way to log visits I have been going back and forth between my GPS and finding each one again on google maps and then logging my visit? I ran a PQ before I went on holiday and now that I am back how do you delete all the caches off. I am going to run a PQ for caches near my home, how do you keep this information up to date on your GPS, do you have to keep deleting it and then reentering them every so often. Has anyone got the 'dummies guide to geocaching' is this a good read and will it answer my questions? Thanks for your help Tracy
  22. Thank you Chris this worked a treat and took me less than a minute and they are now all on there. Tracy
  23. Thank you now I am really confused, at the moment I have just been plugging the GPS into the computer and clicking on each one that I want individually and it sends it straight to the GPS but I thought as I wanted a few it would be easier to run a pocket query and then only have to click once to download the whole lot, only there didn't seem to be this option. I forgot to say that I have a Dakota 10 so that I can go paperless.
  24. Hi I am a fairly new member and have run a PQ for our Wales holiday the only problem is I am confused as to how I now get them onto my GPS, can anyone help explain. Thanks Tracy
  25. Hi Sarah Yes its me, I knew that sooner or later I would cross paths with someone from another forum, do you have different user names on all your forums - I wouldn't be able to remember who I was where if I did that. Tracy
