  1. I wonder if you can get one of those "foam" keychains so the maglight can float. Those are the ones you see in camping stores so when you are fishing if you drop your keys they float; usually they are foam and oval shaped.
  2. Wasn't to sure if this should go into this forum or the "topics" section. I want to buy a flashlight for geocaching and for other uses. I would like it to be waterproof and float if dropped in water. Any suggestions on a good one? I don't want to bother with a headlamp because I would like to also use it like a normal flashlights when not geocaching. edit: Oh, forgot something. I don't want to spend a ton of money on a flashlight. I was thinking of under $30 if that is possible; not looking for the best of the best just a good one.
  3. I also have the Explorist GC, how are you trying to send them to the GPS? If you are viewing a geocaching on the website you can click on the "send to gps" button a new window will appear. Then click on the Magellan tab, you will have to download the magellan communicator plugin to able to send them to the gps. You can also use the vantage point software, LINK (free), or you can use GSAK, LINK (free but after 21 days it displays a nag screen). Since you are a premium member you can setup "pocket queries", help on pocket queries that way you can just download a whole bunch of geocaches and then load them into one of the above software. These should allow you to send over the pictures in the cache page unless they are the ones that people have posted in the find logs or the ones that are right above the logs section labeled "View the Image Gallery of X images" those don't transfer over.
  4. Welcome to the wonderful world of geocaching. I have the Magellan eXplorist GC unit (company website), (link to reviews on geocaching) and I love it. It does cost $150 at Target right now. A note on the paperless caching; it means that the description page can be loaded into your GPSr so that all you have to do is carry around the GPSr instead of printing out a lot pages BUT you have to become a premium member ($30/year well worth it and it supports geocaching.com). 1) having a gps is just about required in the game / sport. When you have a gps and enter / load the coordinates into the GPSr (GPS receiver) it will lead you to the general area (GPSr are accurate within about 20feet. Some people will tell you to buy more expensive GPSr's because they might have a better accuracy but that is also the fun of it; not being right on top of the cache and hunting for it. 2) from what I have found the most common shapes seem to be film containers and lock-n-lock style containers but there is no real standard container. Link that will tell you about different types of caches It is all based on what the "size" says towards the top of the geocache page. 3) the one thing about geocaching is that you do not have to dig for them; as in use a shovel to dig up the earth. 4) Yes some are on private property but they have permission to place it there; most of the time it states on the bottom of the geocache description page. Main thing is don't be afraid to ask questions here because a lot of people can help you out and explore this website for help. Some links: Tips about finding
  5. Just finished creating the different pocket queries with the different dates; there ended up being a total of 7 of them and one for the Seaway Trail geocaches. This should work, now I just have to wait for them to run on the different days. The first one ended Feb 26th 2006 (with about 995 caches) so I made the next one start Feb 27th 2006. Thank you very much again. I guess you could do the same for the whole state just expand the mileage out to what it would be for across the whole state of NY. I have no idea what it would be to cover NYC because the site I normally use, My link, is not showing the map portion right now. Just a note for anyone wanting to do this, if you tell it a date that doesn't exist (Feb 30th of any year) it seems to jump right to 1,000 caches
  6. I will have to try that. Never thought about just using dates, I was just placing the from location as different point at WNY (WNY = Buffalo area). Thanks for the tip. It would be neat if geocaching did setup an option in the pocket query that just "all of state ..." so I could load all of NY or something that said west / east / north / south of city in state.
  7. Don't know if anyone noticed but Magellan has now version 1.6 firmware for the GC unit.
  8. We also had the same problem with ours when we first got it. At first it would be completely off, location and the time. Then after sitting for a few minutes it locked onto the correct area but it still had the wrong time. After a few minutes (I think it was about 5) the time finally corrected it self. That was even after turning the unit on and off a few times. Now at that time we were still running with the stock firmware; I know you said that you uploaded the current software, was that 1.6?
  9. Instead of editing the files on the GC, when you go to load the log files from your gps onto the geocaching website you can just edit the files right from there. If that doesn't make sense: 1) When done geocaching and have marked the caches found on the GC while out caching, connect GPS to computer. 1a) You can also use the Vantage Point software to upload you field notes, it detects new logs and will bring you right to the site 2) Go to the "your profile" section on geocaching.com, then go to the bottom where it says "access your field notes" 3) Go under the Magellan section and click on the link, LINK to upload field notes, and click on the browse button. 4) If you click on the Magellan tab it will tell you where the files is located. 5) You then can enter any more notes for each one of the cachces that you didn't already type in while in the field. (What we do is just mark the cache as found on the GC, unless the log is full then we make a tiny note like "LF" on the GC to remind us) This way you are not messing around with the files on the GC and maybe messing them up.
  10. I have the explorist GC for about 3 months now and I love it. All over the forums I hear people talking about how it is not accurate. When ours beeps (telling us that we are with-in 20 feet of the cache) that is when you should pay more attention to the area around you anyway not the GPS. With the GC when it says that we have 2 feet to go to the cache it is usually dead on. I think you might have just had a defective one. Even in this day products are sometimes defective right from the company (doesn't mean the product or the company or bad). If you didn't already request a new one from Magellan I would have said to bring it back to the store (never hear of REI) and just exchange it for a new one.
  11. At the very least here is some instructions on how to create your own: LINK I am thinking at the very least it wouldn't hurt to put it in the larger boxes.
  12. No I do not have a smart phone. One question why would I filter it using GSAK? Would it just be for the older caches? I am not interested in just older caches or ones of a certain type.
  13. The main reason I want all caches is so that when we go out for a normal day (shopping, seeing sights (especially since we live so close to Niagara Falls) we can say "hey, I wonder if there is any caches in the area". This way we can just do some caches without spending a few hours planning. If I have all of the caches in the area then I don't say latter when we log the ones we found "that would have been a neat one to do" type of thing.
  14. Let me start by saying I am sorry if this is in the wrong form section; couldn't figure out the right section. I already of individual pocket queries setup for different sections of WNY (Western New York, where I live) so that I believe that I can cover the whole section. What I did is choose my house, a place that is towards the top left of WNY, a place that is towards the bottom left of WNY and some other areas. I have the settings be a total of 1,000 geocaches for each pocket query and a max of 100 miles away staying just in NY state. The idea is this way I can load them all onto my Magellan explorist GC unit (which holds 10,000 caches, also just updated to firmware 1.6 if anyone didn't know) and when my wife and I are out we can just turn on the unit and see if there is any in the area we missed. I like to delete all of the caches each month and re-run the pocket query to get new logs, caches, and other new stuff. What my main question is is there a better way of making sure that I am covering all of WNY? I want all of the caches from Rochester over to Buffalo; Rochester is the farthest we would travel in a day. When I take each one of my pocket queries and load them into GSAK each one has a lot that already exist from other pocket queries but also contain some that they didn't.
  15. Did you originally mark them as found on your explorist? Why are you trying to do this? Maybe if I understand that I can better help you with want you are trying to do; I have the explorist gc also.
  16. You can also take a look at the eXplorist GC; I own one. LINK It is designed for Geocaching, can very easly download caches right from geocaching.com is waterproof. Take a look at the website. I love mine and so far there are no problems with it. If you do get it make sure to check to see if it has the latest software; a lot of bug fixes. Any questions about it just ask.
  17. If you want to log them immediately when you find them, then that is the only option that I know of right now. What I do is once I found the cache I log it as found in my eXplorist GC and then when I get back home I connect it to my computer and upload the field notes using the Vantage Point software. I then just type in any notes I want. Since I mark the cache as found, using the eXplorist GC, when I find it it using the current time / date of the find for the log.
  18. I found this: To reset the eXplorist GC, open the USB cover, insert the end of a paperclip into the small reset hole, and the eXplorist GC should reset and re-start. from here: LINK I know the main problem is a little different but it does tell you how to reset it. I just don't know if it resets it to factory defaults or not.
  19. I have the same unit but when I go to upload the "newlogs" file I uncheck the "ignore logs before ..."; I believe it says something like that, going off memory. This way it takes any of the logs from the file and uploads them. When I am done the VantagePoint software then asks me if I want to clear the log and I say yes. See if that helps.
  20. In the settings, tools, stats section of my eXplorist GC the "avg time to find" is completely off. Right now is says 49710d 6hr ... Is there a way to reset that? If I press the menu button while on that screen all I get is "view awards, reset geocache history, & clear all favorites". I don't know what the "reset geocache history" will reset.
  21. Yes, it shows part of the name then a "..." at the end. You will see the whole name if it is 30 characters or less. If it is over 30, you will see the "..." at the end. Most cache names are under 30 characters (and spaces.) Thank you. Still new to this and didn't know if there was just something that I was missing. I was mainly asking about that because of the seaway trail caches in our area. They over take the 30 letters. Seaway Trail caches
  22. Yes, it shows part of the name then a "..." at the end.
  23. When I bring up the list of geocaches, in the Magellan eXplorist GC, and then I click on one the name that appears on top doesn't always show the whole name. The area I am talking about is when you bring up the details on a cache. You see the description, logs, hints, etc. All the way on the top (above the difficulty section) when a cache name is long it just rolls off the screen. Is there a way to scroll / view the whole text?
  24. Thank you. I saw that button before and was typing in my username / password but nothing ever came up. Since I am new to this I didn't understand what it was talking about. It is currently downloading the caches right now. Thank you.
  25. I am using the software that Magellan tells me to use. It is the vantagepoit software found here: Link to software
