I suppose you're writing to me, JALBA alias KD5OM.
I have been tearing and reasembling PCs for 20 years and I chose SIIG because in the past, their stuff always worked the first time.
As I shared, I tested this cable installation with my Street Atlas mapping program and three different GPSs and it works on all three.
I have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers, re-mapped the com ports through the Properties Dialoge box.
I wish Garmin made a USB cable for the Etrexes.

Well, with 20 years in pc's you gotta know what you are doing. Sorry for the basic questions - gotta start somewhere. I have liked SIIG for a long time. Seems strange it works for others but not the Legend. Have you tried reinstalling GSAK. There was a previous person here that got it working after reinstalling GSAK.
OT but are you a HAM operator - KD5OM sounds like a call sign.
I will do the unistall/re-install of GSAK. I have no experience with a USB to RS-232 serial cable. I was curious just how well something like this might work. I also don't have a lot of experience with Windows XP but I'm learning. I will report on the findings.
The OSs get a bit more complicated with every release. I cut my teeth on LDOS & then MSDOS back in the days of the Z80. How things have changed!

yes -
first make sure that if you have a PDA you disable your serial sync setup and quit any other program that might be using the serial port.
When you are in your GSAK serial setup screen change to magellan and see what serial ports the drop down says you have available. You are trying for COM2 but this may not be the correct port.
Sounds like you have the Legend setup properly because the other programs use it. But make sure it is in Garmin mode.

some people have had trouble with USB serial adapters - mine is a Radio Shack. SIIG is an old company in the pc peripheral business and makes quality stuff. Have you been able to use this device for anything else?
Did you follow the instructins carefully for installing this adapter? They can be picky and if you do it wrong it just won't work. I had to install software BEFORE! plugging in the adapter. Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. You'll have to do that from the Device Manager - USB section. At least one person here got their USB adapters working only after removing and reinstalling it.

I hope this is an ok place to post this. I am pretty new to caching and extremly computer stupid. I have a garmin legend and have downloaded gsak. I have successfully loaded one cache into gsak, but when I try to send to my gps I keep getting an error that says it "can't init com 2. I have double checked and I am hooked to com 2, and my control panel says it's working normally. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Advtrskr
I have the same problem. I just bought a new notebook pc and they don't put RS-232 serial ports on them any longer. I bought a SIIG USB to Serial cable and my Street Atlas sees my Garman Etrex Vista and Etrex (yellow) fine. Street Atlas also sees my DeLorme Tripmate fine through this cable. My Device Manager say's everthing is operating properly. However, GSAK on my new laptop renders the error message "can't init com 2 ( and any other available com ports)". I tried checking and unchecking the Use USB box in GSAK GPS Setup. When using GSAK on my old Notebook "P233 clunker running XP Pro" I can send waypoints to my GPSs just fine direct through it's RS-232 serial port. I figure it might be just a hardware or OS problem but I don't know where to go to fix it. New notebook is a Dell Inspiron 1000, Win XP os. GSAK is 5.1.4 Build 10.
Suggestions anybody?

I have a dedicated OLD Kenwood TH21at talkie and 10 watt amp along with a Tinytrak3 APRS controller and DeLorme Tripmate GPS as my tracker. GPS receiver, radio, amp, TT3 costs me a total of about $100.00 for a tracker. Go to http://www.kd5om.com and see my location. My tracker has been running for 2 years continuously with no problems. All this fits into an ABS plastic box and is hidden in my tire jack compartment in my Yukon.
As far as a radio to talk on, I like my Icom T7H dual band talkie and my Kenwood TH79a dual band talkie. My mobile unit is an Icom IC-207 dual band. In the shack I have an old Icom IC-27H and an old Alinco DR-112T. If you go shopping for a pre-owned radio, make sure it has CTCSS tones. Most repeaters uses tones now-a-days.
As far as a unit to do both, you would probably save a lot of doe by having 2 radios. My wife, a none ham, and I use FMRS while on outings.
Oh yea!! Congradulations on your new ticket. Ham radio and Geocaching goes together very well. Someday I hope to QSO with you on 20 meters HF.

To answer the question. A "T" hunt is a Turkey Hunt. A Turkey generally refers to an unlicensed illegal operator. For practice, we call the hunts "Fox Hunts" where the Fox is a licensed op who will move around to avoid being caught. All this is done with special radio direction finding antennas. Being a pilot, I have deployed this same technology in finding downed ELTs (emergency location transmitters).
I would be interested in a combined hunt and GPS.

A license is absolutley necessary! Hams are pretty good about self-policing our frequencies. Especially here in the D/FW, Texas area. And yes, when the Feds catch up with an unlicensed operator, it has been be both a jail sentence and $$$. Go read: http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2000/02/10/5/

Follow up on the USB to RS-232 9 pin serial problems.
I can not explain it. Today at 3 pm I hooked it all up once again and ran Garmin's software update to see if it would read the GPS and it did. Garmin's software utility has an "autodect" serial port feature and it found the GPS on com1 where the Device Manager was reporting com5? Go figure.
I started GSAK and setup for com1 and lickity-split, the transfer took place!
Note to Clyde: Please consider in future releases maybe the same "autodetect" com port feature as in Garmin's software update utility.
By the way, we have only been enjoying Geocaching for only about a month and wondered if there was a better way to enter waypoints. GSAK is definately the way to go. Good show Clyde.
