  1. Many cachers like to exclude micros (and nanos, if GS damned well had a size option for them!), etc, from their PQs. I'd be annoyed to arrive at such a site, realise the CO was being "clever" and that it was really a nano or micro. Sometimes I don't mind taking the time to hunt for peanuts in poo, but I always like the choice to be mine. Thanks for asking, though.
  2. Stripping all the "got my back up" reactions away, I think the most relevant answer was given in Post 14:
  3. One of the most responsible descriptions of geocaching I've ever read from the media. I'm impressed (even with half of it being a direct quote from GS). Yet to see any comments on the article, though I'm sure the inevitable opinions linking it to Al Qaeda will follow soon enough... I expect the string may have been from a yoyo, or something similar?
  4. Yes, it is possible to do that. But that's not what I'm after, and still means the View New Content link (and method of reading) is useless.
  5. Not entirely sure if this is in the right place, but it seems to fit... Most forum software I've used in the past has the ability to exclude/ignore unwanted sub-forums -- specific geography, language, topics, etc -- but I can't see how to do this in this forum. Is this possible to do, or is this a feature we could get added, please? If it's unclear why this is useful: it makes a huge difference when reading via the View New Content link in the top-right.
  6. Failing that, there's always the coverage they gave it some years back:
  7. Thanks for the heads up. Most AV vendor signature/pattern files act like simple whitelists and blacklists: occasionally a vendor will accidentally block a site, but it's usually corrected within 24 hours. Often quicker if people complain. I remember one vendor blacklisted '*' (i.e. everything) once. It didn't last long.
  8. If you go to Google Maps and type "N 57° 28.698 W 004° 25.286 (test1)" into the search box and zoom in, you'll see it show a point near the end of Wardlaw Road. Try changing the last digit by 1 in both of the values (e.g. "N 57° 28.697 W 004° 25.285 (test2)") and see where the pointer displays when you zoom in. That's the maximum level of accuracy you can expect from the GPS of both the cache owner and yours. This Wikipedia article gives more information that may help. In my vast geocaching experience (*ahem* 34 caches), I do what bootsycat does: once I'm close to the location I put it away and use my head and eyes. tl;dr: As the coords cover an area larger than the 1x1ft patch you're standing on, the cache probably won't be under your feet when your GPS reads "0ft".
  9. Nearly all of mine are: "dd/mm/yy Jumile TFTC!" Assuming I can remember the date.
  10. A blueboxing cache? 1980s phreaking meets geocaching... I like it.
  11. I see the oldest their website provides is the 1300. Did you try Googling for it? I found it in about 30 seconds. This link requires you rate and comment on "how good" the product is, which unlocks the link to download a PDF (58 pages). Or if you have a sense of humour: http://bit.ly/IxIPLP
  12. In a previous life as a security consultant, social engineering was an occasional part of the job. The common theme to all aspects of it was confidence (something I don't have too much of when there's not a Get Out Of Jail Free card already pre-signed ), and most of the time Plan A worked first time. I've used similar techniques in the few caches I've found in highly-trafficked areas. Already it's clear that carrying a mobile phone is a free pass to being anywhere without a second thought. "Why's that guy just standing there when I come around the corner?" becomes "Oh, that guy's on his mobile..." A GPSr like an eTrex looks enough like a mobile that you can get away with it, providing you don't try to put it up to your ear when they're close enough to see it's a GPSr.
  13. Nope, it's just you. TomTom, CoPilot, etc, all have the ability to Allow, Block or Ask whenever the software tries to route you through a toll road or bridge.
  14. Coordinates or not, unless you're on an empty street with one postbox and nothing else, you're still going to have a challenge finding the cache. Particularly if you're in dense canopy woods with a lot of debris on the ground. I still (says me sounding like he's been doing this for longer than a week!) use my phone's satnav to get me to a suitable parking area, then the rest is determined by the terrain. Still no caches logged? C'mon... get out there and have at it!
  15. TomTom allows you to record your current location (without resorting to changing the Home waypoint) by going into the map view, showing the current location, and then adding a waypoint (Favourite?) at the current location. Can't remember the exact sequence, but all versions of TT that I've used allow this.
  16. My first post. Hi all. I recently upgraded away from an iPhone 3G to an HTC Desire (Android). Happy with the decision, and there are some good apps available on Android for geocaching. After trying a few different apps, I've settled on one that the forum won't let me name or link to*, Radar (provides a proper radar-style blip display), and I switch between a few traditional GPS apps for lat/long or compass navigation: GPS Status, GPS Test, Maverick and Orienteer (just haven't settled on one yet). There's also the Google Maps/Navigator that comes built in. Some GC apps can natively integrate with some or all of these tools. Whichever you choose, see if you can have a play with the phone (preferably with the apps) before you commit. YMMV to mine... -Jumile * A search of the forum doesn't return the application's name, so I have no idea why it's unauthorised: not enough posts from me to allow external links, competition for the (still beta?) GC app, breach of ToS, etc, etc. ETA (16-Jul): Managed to answer my own question about the software-that-shall-not-speak-its-name by searching elsewhere on the Internet. It appears that said program breaches the GS ToS because it mimics a web browser and 'scrapes' the GC website, the claim being that it negatively impacts GC server performance. With that in mind, would GS/GC care to make a list of banned programs and/or provide a list of 'approved' programs (either/both in FAQ form)? As things stand, I could have found myself banned before even making my first post to the forum. Please be a little more open and help us to help ourselves?
