  1. At least you cannot say they didn't get the word out pretty much every way they could, eh?
  2. Psst... your gallery is empty. Oops! Just an observation, but I also looked at your logs. All of the older ones had nothing in them at all. I don't want you to get beat up on that, but if you are not even going to comment in a log I don't see this being too much of a social game for you.
  3. Wherigo caches are required to have a container at the end. A Wherigo cartridge can be listed on the Wherigo site and have not container, but if it is listed as a Wherigo Geocache, it must have a container, logbook, etc. Fobesman, you might want to correct the spelling. It is Wherigo and Locationless with no dash. Just an FYI.
  4. "Mongo only pawn in game of life." Ack. I remember doing cache review on dial-up. You think pages load on the site slow now sometimes? Click the link to nearest caches... check back during next commercial on TV. I'll stick to my 22 mbps cable connection!
  5. Majicryan92, your issue is very much a known issue. It is explained briefly on the right side of the map, where it says that personalization is turned off at this time due to performance issues. The overall issue is being discussed in this topic. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272744 Team Polarbear, your issue is different. Perhaps you should go to the "Feedback" site and post a new topic. Geocaching.com employees do not frequent these forums so issues like that need to be posted to the Feedback site. Click the link at the left "Feedback" and you will be taken to the site. Your login will be the same as here, and clicking the "Sign in" link will get you signed into the site. As you type in your question, if it has been asked before, it will search it out and display it. If you don't see your question displayed then post a new question.
  6. That's basically a Wordpress platform website. I think you went from some valid suggestions in your first post to completely losing credibility with this one. I get his point. It isn't that it is produced with a clunky web development software set. It is the overall look and feel and layout that he likes. It isn't that bad from an aesthetic point of view.
  7. My backspace key no longer has any letters on it. I can find it blindfolded.
  8. I will say that despite how a cacher or two might frustrate me, if the cache is good to go it gets published. You cannot be personal in this or you will be gone. Keep in mind that it isn't about the cache owner totally, it is about the people that will go find it too. As Keystone said earlier: Despite the OP being snarky toward me and putting words in my mouth, I hope it works out best for him.
  9. +1. While geocaching is an inherently social activity, it's my belief that chasing the "social networking" fad-of-the-moment would be a long-term disaster. I think that having a fast, reliable database and making mobile apps is a much better use of the developers' time. See... fizzy and I can agree on stuff. :D
  10. I merged the last four posts into this ongoing topic since it was a complaint rather than just another topic asking what happened. Please feel free to read the topic to see the other responses. Fun to play with the Merge Topic tool every now and then too. Donuts were on sale yesterday at Kroger. I should have bought some.
  11. I don't think you are seen as an attacker. You have a point and want to stick to it. Heck fire, nothing wrong with that. Other think you don't get it here and want to stick to their guns too. This does point out a HUGE flaw in trying to turn this into some additional social networking site. This exchange is somewhat impersonal. You read the words the way you want to. I can see your passion, and I see others that feel passionate about their feeling about what this site should be. The impersonal nature of the exchange is bad historically in forums and such. I have a great example. fizzymagic and I have gone toe to toe here on lots of occasions. We FINALLY met in Seattle last summer. He thought I would not want to meet him. It was one of the highlights of my trip. We don't always agree and we have certainly thrown some evil barbs at each other, but when we met we had a great conversation (all too brief) and I think we both gained immeasurable respect for each other. You want social networking, go to an event. I text, yeah, but man sometimes I wish some people would just call me. You have my phone number right there! Again, impersonal and slow. I can get more done in a three minute conversation than in thirty minutes of texting back and forth. You are missing it here. This is a game. We play here and we meet friends along the way. You can then add those friends to your social networking sites and get more in touch with them in other various ways beyond just geocaching. I have many guestbooks for people to sign. They are my hidden caches. You can easily look at my hidden caches and see what people think of my work. If they like my work, they gush on my cache pages. If my cache is a stinker, they say "TFTC". Oh yeah, I bookmark/favorite the pocket query page, the field notes page, the find another user page and greasemonkey script a few other query pages (hidden by user, found by user, user's profile, etc.). I use the bookmark toolbar to one click my way to various forum landing pages. Your browser is your greatest tool. Use it wisely.
  12. It is a site traffic issue. It is being discussed in this topic. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272744 Closing this duplicate topic.
  13. I would address the social networking bit. I have some friends that have spooled every single find they make to Facebook. I put them on ignore there. If they did a 50 to 75 cache run day, all I saw was the auto-generated "Found GCWHTEVR". I don't care about every cache you find nor do I want it clogging up my news feed. I do like those that take the time to say they are heading out to a cool area for the day, then post pictures later on with personal notes about the day. That is easier to follow, much more interesting overall, and I didn't have to look at an impersonal "Found GCWHTEVR" over and over and over. Those typically get zero likes and zero comments. That says something about that type of feed. To me, auto-generation ends up being noise. With 500+ friends, I like more personal feed information than auto-generated noise. Twitter spooling exists right now. http://www.geocaching.com/my/sharing.aspx You have a friends page too. http://www.geocaching.com/my/myfriends.aspx You cannot do much at this time, but it does give you "vitals". You can email them from there too. Both of those are on that right side string of stuff on the "Your Profile" page. For some, geocaching is a solitary game. They don't want you to bombard them with messaging. That must be factored in. They probably don't have Facebook accounts by choice. I don't see the need for GC.com to reinvent the social network. I would rather them focus on making the listing service of geocaches more functional. Facebook and Twitter own online, virtual social networking. I think the focus on this site is best said right here. I will point out that you changed the text style and size on your post? It makes it small and the text is too condensed to read easily. Just sayin'. Over the weekend I took a news story on VHS tape and converted it to DVD. It was funny to see the 2001 version of the site. It has changed and seems to continue to do so. Some of your stuff regarding navigation is right on and hopefully that take some of these types of suggestions and consider them and better ways navigate the site.
  14. How about, if it appears that the owner is active, post a canned reviewer note with instructions on how the owner can do it themselves. This hopefully will cut down on having to do it for that same owner, the next time it comes up. Multiple caches by one owner ends up involving disabled caches too it seems. I just sent an owner a personal email about their caches. I hoped everything was OK with them. I know people like their caches but I have felt like I have had to archive a few. They replied back quickly and have real life issues going on. They are going to try to get on them. Unfortunately, they still sit. Tough call for the reviewers. No really good solution. I'll give an example of the community maintained cache too. I've replaced a cache for an old pal of mine. I noticed a month ago that it was missing again and confirmed it. We didn't have a replacement at that time though. I went back just two days ago but forgot about it. I was late getting over to see my dad and wanted to go check another area out that has some land owner flux issues. I wanted to see the area first hand and was going that way. I could have replaced this other cache in ten minutes, but I forgot. Someone posted a Needs Archived note yesterday. I posted a note on the cache yesterday that I forgot to get it the day before that and did disable it. I'll replace it when I go back in the next few weeks. An automatic system might just kill it before I can help my pal out. Again, considering all the variables in play, an absolute automatic system might not be a good solution. I don't know though.
  15. It is one of the selections in a pocket query. You can sort by various attributes, including the NM one. Attributes to Include (Click to include/exclude certain attributes.) Fifth row down, first one on the left. Yes. I've done that from emails. It is something I have been looking at lately actually. In Alabama where I review I have pulled a query about it. There are over 1,000 at this time. I've looked at a few and have not gone deep into it. I've removed some if they just look good, some I have found even. At five minutes a cache though, that is 5,000 minutes of my time. I would like to knock that down though, so I will probably keep looking at them.
  16. I didn't call you a liar at all. I just said that there are guideline issues that I still see and that this might be what is holding you up. If you read more into it than that, then you are making a reach that isn't intended. The fact remains that it isn't published so something is holding it up.
  17. I misread, and don't know the answer to that one. My guess is that they are intentionally planning this as a short term solution so there is something to talk about in the forums besides hating nanos , TFTC logs and bringing back virtual caches.
  18. Yep. That is why sometimes you will see reports in the forums where some people have issues and some don't. The computer you are routed too might be having issues and the others are not.
  19. I have to agree with Keystone here. I also still see issues, so I am now a bit curious as well. All notes are in email, so we cannot see any notes. Looking at it at this time I wonder if some of the problem is that you are not making all the changes despite what you said in the quote above, but who knows. Since it isn't published, my guess is that it might be all about the guidelines after all.
  20. Thanks. Here is the active topic. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272744 Closing this duplicate.

  23. I know it is frustrating, but I quote this post in more of a general sense and not just directly at CanDMan47. I do like change. Without it, this site would be like Navicache. It looks the same and not much has changed since it first started (if anything has changed). I would really hate to be where we were seven or eight years ago still. There are no overall maps on that site. They rely on another site, which also still looks the same as it did years ago. Go check them out. Go to a cache page and check that baby out. Yeah. Impressed? My bet is probably not. The maps on the individual cache pages are, um... oh, there is no map. "Maps are queued for generation." Nice. That would go over really well here. This is interesting though as those that like to bash Groundspeak come out to revel in these rough times. I have perspective I guess. I know what it was like early on and have seen this site grow. It is a bummer that these things being switched off, yes. It is a bummer that site traffic grows and sometimes the hamsters need new more teams to keep the wheels running. Somehow, I still think I will manage to find caches tomorrow. Bash away, but I thank the people in Seattle for their work and for making this the best site. It has the most features and continues to give us more ways to see what is out there and tools to allow us to use so many devices to find caches. Android and iPhone apps. Pocket queries to load up to 1,000 caches into your GPS at one time. Field notes in several units and mobile apps so you can record important data right at the cache. Maps, buggy right now, but that you can scroll and zoom in and out and see those pockets of caches you want to go dive into. The ability to show thousands of simultaneous users over 1,350,000 caches world wide with the click of a mouse. I like the changes over time and I hope they continue to improve the geocaching experience rather than just having a stagnant, dated, featureless web site. I accept that this will always be a work in progress. If you want a comparison, you have one live right now that you can look at. I would rather be where we are here at this point in time rather than still using the old, basic site, even with the hiccups associated with the continued exponential growth in the user base for this site.
  24. I modified the topic title to clarify this topic. I added "Cache notes not accepted in IE9". There is another topic discussion the issue with the smileys not showing on the maps here.
  25. I am going to close this topic to get this issue consolidated into one topic. The newer topic also has more information, including this message sent from Moun10Bike to k.f.boom. It explains the issue and that they are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. Please feel free to continue the discussion in the other topic. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=272744
