  1. The two threads going around adressing trade items turning into junk got me thinking. Are there more caches with trade items than arent? By definition, a micro cache cant contain trade items. This is the blessing and curse of micros. How many people would still cache, if micros were the only type in existance? I haven't done the math, but I think that given the GC pre-defined cache categories, that Micros would compose more than its "fair" 25% or so. The disapointment in finding junk is only around because we find non junk. I hate to say this, but Parents seem to drag children along to find caches. What I mean is, what 'kid' would have the facilities to find a cache all by him/her self? Along with the dragging along, the set up of "you might find a toy" has to be delivered in some form or another. Our sport is (relatively) new, and different. Some would even argue that it is unexpected. What we can expect however, is that most people will muggle the cache rather than adopt to our rules. Of those who do play, the rules played with also varry. Best case senario, every single rule, practice and ideal is followed to the letter. I can't take that much for granted. At the very least, the cache items are still there ((most importantly the log)) and we can work in time to improve the situation. (((The cache getting muggled is always a possibility-- but is not applicable when talking about the items in said cache.)))
  2. I was over at the "Kids stuff in caches" thread. Most of what I want to say, I said over there. It did after all as the OP stated, inspired this one. That being said; I wanted to state this over in that thread, but did not. I used to work at a game store (The Game Keeper) before Wizards of the Coast(Wotc) and later Hasbro acquired us. Hasbro closed all Game Keeper stores a few years back. Given that we were owned by Wotc we had nice promotional items. Pokemon was at its peak then, and Wotc (At that time) made pokemon cards, and still makes the original Collectible Card Game "Magic:The Gathering" (MTG). The plan Wotc had was to include 10 card sampler packs of MTG into each bag of product sold. The idea was to get the children who bought the pokemon cards to get interested in MTG (A game that is 12 years young) and buy those cards as well. The store had to close before most of the promotional items (the sampler packs of MTG, and "rare" pokemon cards that we had) were sent out. My boss told me that they would have to be thrown away. At the time (Holiday 2000) I had no real reason as to why I wanted the promo items, other than I actually played the games, and could make use of the cards. ((You need certain card type more than others, and I could never find those certain cards -- each sampler pack had 5 cards of this type)) So to me, basically the packs of cards are useless, as I have tons. The cards are playable, in mint condition, and in original packaging. They can be traded like baseball cards, and each pack has a total value of $1.00 (the other promotional items I have go for a little bit more per unit) So, I drop a couple of promotional items and some of the sampler packs off in the non micro-caches I find. ((Each pack having exactly the same cards as any other sampler pack)) I figure that given what I provided, I at least trade even, if not up. Case in point: if you have a lot of something that other people (Magazines/Price Guides) have a stated value for trade those items. The marginal utility the finders have will be greater than the marginal utility you will have on those items. And, if your real lucky, you might end up using those items as a psuedo signature item. 3. What? no markwell on how to markwell??
  4. Caches get taken kit and kaboodle (Muggled) a lot. Would you rather the person end up with a few Mc Toys, or higher valued items? I only have 5 finds to my name, 3 have been film can micros, one traditonal small cache, and one muggled large cache. I agree that the hobby is finding it, and logging the visit. We should all remain in the hobby (And most of us would) if all trade items disapeared. The trade items are most often an after thought. Your geocaching, not opening presents durring the holidays, not shopping for items on your "I want" list. That being said, I like the anticipation of trading. I think all of us are, when we are honnest with ourselves. But for the first time in my life, I have something to do when I have nothing to do. I have a hobby that has so many side benefits that I can not begin to count. Cheap and small items are best suited for caching, fit the space and budget constraints. Inexpensive items (Not "cheap" items) may frequent caches, but most of these items seem to be items that get used up. I have read where rolls of duct tape, pencils, markers, etc, are left. There is even a thread going on now on Dollar Store items. I think a lot of people leave "dead" media items around also.... Cassette tapes, Original Game boy cartriges, older console carts.... etc. I've given thought of trading my DVDs I have two versions of. But havent decided fully either way yet. Seriously leave similar items you want to find, and after a while you will begin to see why most caches have cheap items. ((The target audience for the trade items doubtfuly can find a single cache un-aided.... not a "for-kid" cache.))
  5. www.Dollartree.com One of the best CHAIN dollar stores around. If you visit one for the first time, don't judge the actual items value if the store is over crowded. I walked into one Dollar Tree once, it was so crowded that If that was my first impression, I would never have entered another Dollar Tree. But seriously. Dollar trees have a LOT of good stuff. Toys that seem to be in every location; 100 marble pack, 2 Decks of cards, 50+ green (or other color) army men ----------------------- Batteries Bibles, other Books (I got Hulk Hogan's Autobiography, and and Orson Scott Card book at a dollar tree) DVDs (Ok, so its old stuff, and stock footage. But hey, not every one knows about Eeegah yet. ) ----------------------- Just go to one already!!!
  6. I wouldn't make things overly ""smelly"" critters might think the items to be food. (Cucumber is a big soap/shampoo smell for example). But the idea of Male / Female cache is cool, but I would play it safe and avoid smelly and razor blades (razors). I'm sure if you want to go for toiletries there are plenty of other safer items to place.
  7. Geocaching: The global take a penny leave a penny tray. But seriously, if we can use Sport where you are are the search engine...
  8. What would you do for a Klondike bar? Geocache? Oh. it has to be something I don't do already... darn.
  9. All I have to say is, I found 5 caches with out a GPSr. I get a GPSr, and then my car quits on me. GC is no fun with out wheels.
  10. A Stuffed Badger, but not a Stuffed Pikachu? 1.Duct Tape 2.WD 40 (What else do you need?) 3.GPS Unit with Starting waypoint. (I mean, your holding on to perhaps your best ticket out of here, USE IT!) 4.Batteries. I've got a ton of Dollar store batts. I usually leave them at home 5.Cell Phone 6.Swiss Army Knife 7.Flashlight 8.Some method of fire starting 9.Water and Purification 10.Food
  11. I was wondering when we would talk about Apples To Apples the game. Has there ever been a bad review for the game? NO! so go play it already.
  12. I used to 'dig' Charolette Chruch does that count as cacheing with her? Then again, Im just 22 ... so maybe.... Wink Martindale Geocaches? I wonder if he ever finds any Dragons. (Que Twangy 1980s pseudo synthesizer music) Not surprised that Wheaton caches. I never knew who he was. He made appearences on "The Screen Savers" a couple of times, so I knew his [for lack of a better word] 'geek' level was high. I wonder if they leave headshots or something as swag.
  13. Seriously though, Fairly Odd has some good writing. A lot of jokes the "Target" audience won't get.
  14. The only person who has such a Name must have FAIRY GOD PARENTS!!! You get an F!!!! And for some strange reason I feel the need to spend 100 for a GPS system and go GEOCACHING!!!!
  15. I have yet to see HGGTTG Movie, I read a couple chapters however, and I am well versed on why you should never forget your Towel. However, after Watching Criminal Intent Sunday, I have even more respect for the Trowel.
  16. Just curious as to how many people here also play CCGs and RPGs. I Guess I should include "german" style gaming. You know you have more than 10 board games at home, and play most of them as often as you can. We are talking beyond Monopoly, Scrabble, Sorry, and the like. I would like to exclude gamers that use PCs or Video Game consoles. That seems to be less physical -- IE less likely to get up and go out to do something. But, if you are a rabid console gamer, you can let us know that as well. Short story made shorter: Through a psuedo Role-playing game the Roleplaying Club started here on Campus (Kennesaw State U) I found out that the group also sponsored a GC club. Which was cool, as I found this out about a month after Geocaching ever entered my vocabulary.
  17. Well I would assume that the title is misleading. I mean we all pick a name for a particualar reason. Its not like we are all John Doe around here. 1. Magic; A psuedo Sig Item I leave in caches (that are big enough) are Magic: The Gathering sampler packs. (Think Yugioh/Pokemon cards, but the Original Game that invented the concept-- and Light years ahead in terms of Strategy) I worked for Wizards of the Coast (Retail) and when our shop closed I took all the promotional items (They where to be trash anyway). The packs have 11 cards in it, and literature on the game and its history. -A free sample type packaging. (However, the cards inside are worth a combined $1.00+ ) 2.Meeko; After the Raccoon. I like Raccoons and always have. I use 'Meeko' in some form or another on a lot of other non-gc forums I frequent. I also go by Electronicwaffle/Ewaffle but I dont have any electronic waffles lying around. (That name is another long story, for another time.)
  18. You might Geocache too much if You get hooked on the sport, and your car dies on you a month later. Geocaching is kinda hard to do with out wheels.
  19. You know if we do adopt a random GC page, its not gonna be something your gonna use every day. But thats to be expected, by its definition. Its like a fine wine, you got to use it in moderation. Apparently the option to have the feature is not labor intensive. I clicked it a few times, and got a few archived, one or two actives both physical. I think this is do-able. The amount of archived caches is to be expected, as muggled caches are a common thing. Ultimately the best results will be the ones with pictures of the view, or possibly of cache contents. There is a similar feature on IMDB that I enjoy a lot. However, with only 5 finds under this Neocacher's belt, the amount of Caches I havent found is far greater than the number of movies Ive seen // don't care to see ever.
  20. Seriously. Can we have an option where we can click a link or button and pull up a random cache page? (That is, over all the Caches on the site, regardless of locale) If GC is mainly about the stories getting to the cache, wouldn't we all like to see what our "next door" neighbors are doing?
  21. I will get flamed for saying this. But here goes. If Cheerleading is a Sport, Then Geocaching is a sport. Certain physical feats are required to reach a pre-set goal. Some of the goals are harder to reach. Points are rewarded. Highest point total wins. I thought I could use Chess as an Example, but Googling that proves that issue to be a hot topic as well. (I'm pro chess as a sport.)
  22. yeah well. I still think its not at all what we wanted it to be..... For Better or For Worse.
