  1. Well, I haven't found one yet. Since I'm just starting out I didn't know about them at first, so I had a couple of DNF's (Really? Those things lift up? ) When I started reading up about LPC's, I realized why I had missed a couple. So the next time I passed by Walmart I eagerly darted behind the store to the site of my earlier DNF (with wife and daughter in tow), jumped out of the truck and confidently lifted the skirt to find...NOTHING! OK, now I'm puzzled. They say these LPC's are so common, and the GPSr put me right on top of it, this has to be it! (there was even a small plastic toy left sitting on top of the concrete base that wasn't here last time I visited). Someone must have muggled it! We shuffled around awhile, feeling a little dejected, and were about to drive off when I thought about the 6 foot chain link fence about 10 feet behind the light pole. Sure enough, cache was under one of the fencepost caps! A good learning experience for this newbie, don't fall for the obvious! So no, I'm actually looking forward to finding a few LPC's
  2. I had an experience this evening where I actually called the police myself to a cache location. I was hunting a cache on the edge of a university campus, and it seemed like a pretty easy one because as I got near GZ, I saw a large blue object barely concealed behind some bushes. Oh boy, I thought, this one will be easy, I can see it from 50 feet away. Not a very good hide, though, pretty obvious. But when I reached it I found it was a large blue duffel bag. Could this be the cache? I unzipped the bag and found it full of clothing and other personal items, like someone had stashed it here fairly recently. There was no one around at all, it kinda creeped me out. Anyway, I got my bearings again and quickly found the actual cache about 30 feet away. Then I went to the university police office and reported what I had found. They sent an officer out to meet me and I showed him to the location (had to explain Geocaching a little to him, he had heard of it but didn't know there was a cache on campus). He picked up the bag for further investigation. Anyway, a weird experience....
  3. I'm just getting started in Geocaching. The odd thing for me is that I work as a security officer for a large industrial facility (restricted area and we fall under Homeland Security guidelines) so ironically the type of lurking and poking around common in Geocaching is exactly the kind of behavior I'm always looking out for at work! Consequently I'm always thinking my own activities must look mighty suspicious, but then I have to remind myself that the average observer probably doesn't notice or care what I'm up to
  4. I'm a volunteer fire chief and my radio number is 301 (kinda copied off some acquaintances of mine in a neighboring department who got me started Geocaching...they use their radio callsigns as well)
  5. I had been reading a lot about Geocaching and I thought it sounded like fun, but I didn't have a GPS device. Then I got an iPhone 4 and with a little advice from a buddy of mine (NF1, an experienced Geocacher) I decided to give it a try. My first attempt was a DNF, but the next day I found my first, a magnetic keybox hidden in a bridge railing. I was pretty happy about that one because I found it right away. Then a few days later the owner of the other one saw the DNF I posted and thankfully helped me out with a hint. I went back and found it the next day. That was a few weeks ago and I tried for a couple of others around that time, but I guess I still didn't know what to look for because I kept striking out on some "easy" caches. Plus there aren't a lot of caches in my area, so I sorta gave it a rest for a couple of weeks with only two finds to my credit Then this week, I had occasion to be in Baton Rouge 3 consecutive days. I know there are plenty of caches in downtown BR, so I was determined to grab at least one while I was there, which I did. Then I also noticed that several new caches had been added right around my area, so I went after them with much better success than I had at first...maybe I'm starting to learn what to look for? So after flying solo for a couple of days, I'm starting to get into this, so I asked my kids (19 and 12) if they'd like to make a quick run with me. They were a little skeptical at first, but after the first find of the day they also started getting into it! Plus I got to show them some interesting sights in our local area that they'd never noticed or paid attention to, which I guess is one of the great side benefits of this hobby Now I just need to get my wife into it and we'll be on our way!
