  1. Is there a counter somewhere to keep track of your stats? It doesn’t really matter, but I was curious. Keeping tracks of money they finds isn’t that difficult, but keeping track of Adventure logs kind of is for me.
  2. This is an old topic! I love geocaching and disc golf. I haven’t combined them yet, but I should. There are some good places to put a cache on a couple of courses. I am also thinking about trying to dye a disc with the geocaching logo, but we’ll see.
  3. I agree that it would be nice if the app had the ability to log trackables as the site does. I have one that has tracked all my geocaching over the years, and a shirt that I log when I’m wearing it. So, instead of logging in the app, I save every find as a draft, then go to the website and log them. It would be nice to do it all at once. I still log write note and DNF in the app because I don’t dip trackables in those. Also, it’s not an app vs. computer thing. You can visit the website on the phone and log the same way you do on the computer. That is almost always what I do. First world problems! Keep on cachin’!
  4. I went caching with my son yesterday and with the rest of my family today. My son and I are 1 away from Phoenix. We're going to try to finish it. We usually just have Wednesdays to work on it, though, so we'll see. My daughters got to the Mermaid today. I doubt they'll finish it, but we'll see. It's fun so far.
  5. I was just wanting my Magellan eXplorist GC to have the right number of caches in the found it section, so after looking all over to find out how to do that, and realizing that you can't do that, I loaded my myfinds pocket query and started logging. I started yesterday while we were doing other things, and continued today, but when I continued today, I was surprised to find that many of the caches I logged yesterday were not logged as found anymore, but when I looked at my totals, they were still counted, so at that point, I realized that I could just log the same one over and over again until I get to the number that geocaching.com shows. So, I've caught up with all my find, except traditionals. I have 3653 of those to do, which will take awhile, but for the logging the same cache over and over again option, after you log, hit, "back, back, menu, down, enter." On a side note, don't go over your numbers on geocaching.com. I accidentally went over by 3 on multis, and I can't figure out if I delete those or not. Even when I delete my previous logs, the total logs stay the same, so I guess I won't mark the next 3 multis I find on my GPSr. I know this doesn't really matter to most people, but for those of you who are OCD like me, I thought it might help a little.
  6. I only make basic caches, but I also only keep the amount that I can take care of well. It's a lot better for new players to have some basic ones to find before they sign up for a premium account. I have a premium account myself, which also renews automatically every year, but my kids are getting into caching, and they like to have their own account, so from that point of view, too, it's nice to have basic caches around, because while 30 per year isn't much, 60, 90, 120, starts to add up. (They're not old enough to work yet.) Anyway, that's my two cents. I don't mind premium caches, but I certainly don't want that to be all there is.
  7. I never heard back from Magellan, but I did finally fix the issue. I unzipped the exe file and found a map in it that hadn't previously been loaded for whatever reason, so I copied it into the GPSr via drag and drop, and it showed up on the device, but it wouldn't let me load it. So, after that, I ran the exe file again, and it installed successfully. Now it works with GSAK and it has maps. I'm happy for now. I'm not sure what magic combination happened that it ran the update successfully. I'm glad I stumbled across it, though.
  8. I'm having similar problems. I couldn't update mine from 1.7 to 2.15. Then, I read online to connect it and turn it on by holding up, menu, and the power button all at once. That worked, and I was able to update it to 2.15, which looks very different than 1.0 or 1.7. Problem, though, is that now GSAK doesn't recognize that it's connected, and all of my world base maps that were there for 1.0 and 1.7 are gone. 1.7 wasn't being identified by the computer or GSAK, either. Is there any way to go back to 1.0? Everything seemed to be working well with that. I've written Magellan. I hope to hear back from them. I have used Garmin up until now. This isn't a very good introduction.
  9. Hey, thanks for this post. I had the same problem. My GPSr was way off on its taken coordinates. It was working fine up until about 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure when or how the datum changed, but it had changed. I changed it back to WGS84 and it seems to be working now. Thanks.
  10. There is now a geocaching app called Cachly that claims to translate. I am going to Paris in a couple of weeks and thinking about buying it. Has anyone used it? Can you access translated caches offline? It may be worth the 7 dollars it costs.
  11. Hi, I'm trying to get used to the new Geocaching® app, but I can't figure out how to log my trackables at the same time I log my finds. Can someone help me? Thanks.
  12. Hey ncbiscuit, I'm no longer in Istanbul, and I miss the geocaching community greatly. I know they always like to meet new cachers. If you contact geocachers omaggo or haoral with your schedule, they would be happy to set something up for you if they can. Tell them bulcacher sent you. I hope you enjoy the city. It is a very neat place.
  13. That's interesting. I may suggest that to my local friends. I don't have a lot of experience with adoption.
  14. I loved that picture. Very nice. Yeah, I don't know why they wouldn't just archive mine and list a new one. I think it has something to do with it being a Central Asian honor/shame based culture. They don't want to dishonor me by archiving my cache, especially while I'm still here. It may be something else entirely, though. On a side note, the reason for my original question was that I jokingly wrote them and said, "Hey, I see the cache has moved. I guess I can find it now, since I don't know where you put it. " They replied by saying, "Sure. It's waiting for you. Let me know what you think about its new place after you find it." So hence the question here.
  15. Sure, you can find them. Nothing stopped you from finding them while you actually still owned the caches. But many of us think it's a cheesy thing to do, whether you own a cache or once owned it. I think maybe you didn't read all of what I said. I agree with what you said. Totally. My question was about one particular geocache. I have 13 others that I owned, which are now adopted by others, but in the same place I hid them. A little more background into the one. I owned the cache listing, yes. However, I never saw the current cache (actual container) before, I so never owned it. Also, not only has the container changed, but the location has changed by 395.4 feet (120.6 meters). Someone else asked why they didn't just open a new cache. I'll address that in a different comment. Anyway, the location is not mine. The container is not mine. The only thing that WAS mine is the listing. And that doesn't even show up on my profile anymore. So, my question was asking what the consensus is on the one geocache, not on the 13 others. Thanks. Have a good day.
  16. So, I'm leaving where I'm living in about a month, so about a month ago, I put all of my caches up for adoption. All of them were adopted, and one of them has changed locations. As I see it, my name is still on the page, but the cache isn't in my account. I don't know where my friend put the new cache. There also aren't so many caches left for me to find here. I can go find that before I go, right? It doesn't really matter, but one more smiley is one more smiley.
  17. Yeah, I'm in Dubai now, staying near a similar cache. I was hoping for the same thing, but I don't think the CO lives here anymore.
  18. That is what I meant. Sorry about that. I should have known better, too.
  19. So what do the numbers mean? I thought I'd see just how far from home I'd have to go to log 2000 caches. Doing a search for the closest 2000 caches to my home I have a circle 125 miles radius or over 49,000 square miles. I have logged all the caches within 40 mile radius of my home except for the most recent 11 that just was put out last weekend. Doing some playing around with the numbers (hey, it's raining, what else to do) for some locations I find if I lived in NYC that from Battery Park, a person has 2000 caches within 43 miles. San Francisco - 2000 caches within 23 miles. LA - 2000 within 23 miles. Tampa - 44 miles. North Chicago - 39 miles. With each of those the mileage only extends out 180 deg from center point due to the oceans/gulf/lake on one side. Seattle - 29 miles. For Dallas, TX there are 2000 caches within 19 miles radius. However, if a person lived in Circle, MT they'd have to draw a circle 337 miles in radius to get 2000 caches or an area of about 357,000 square miles. Just how big is 357,000 sq mi? That's bigger than the land mass of MT, ND, SD, and WI combined. So a person from Dallas, LA, SF, Seattle, or Chicago with 2000 finds? Yawn. A person from Circle, MT with 2000 finds, now that person has been hitting it hard. Yeah, I started caching in Istanbul, where we just recently surpassed 1000 hides in the COUNTRY! I have spent a few months in the states since I started, and have been able to travel in Europe and Asia some, so my finds are up in the 1300s. I know it is not about the numbers, but the experiences, and with fewer caches in Turkey, the ones that are here really take you to some neat places. Still, though, in September, my family and I are moving to Vancouver, Canada, where there are currently over 22,000 within 100 square miles. My mouth is watering a little bit. On a side note, it is starting to grow in Turkey, largely in part to some local cachers who have gotten excited about the game. There is now a power trail in Istanbul that leads you down the Asian side of the Bosporus with about 35 or so caches.
  20. This was, truly, a really good day. I was glad to be a part of it, and I will always remember it. Thanks for posting this.
  21. I know how you feel about the hesitancy to log, especially on a 5 star difficulty one. I also always like to be the first one in a group to find, but I do claim the find when someone else finds it. I don't see anything wrong with claiming the find, though. I had one a few weeks ago that I couldn't find, and apparently put my hand on it several times. I called the CO, and he told me where it should be. I told him I had looked there, but then I went back and checked again. It was there. I signed the log and logged it on the site. Not my finest moment, but like you, I couldn't go back and "find" it later. I thought I was calling him to confirm that it had been lost, but it didn't turn out that way. Anyway...
  22. If the container is shot, not much point in worrying about a lock, leave a NM. Possible a dozen noticed the same and never said anything. The CO should be happy you were honest in your NM. It's a find if you signed the log. That's what I figured. I think that's what I did. I found it sometime a year and a half ago when I was in the states. I went a bit nuts there and found 700 some-odd in 6 months. I started caching in Istanbul and still live here, and there aren't a lot of caches around. More locals are getting involved, though, so that's good. Things are muggled a lot, though, too, so it's a little hard to be a CO here. I think I try to keep around 20 active ones. That's enough. Also, because of the muggles, there are lots of DNF=Found Its here. That's why I joined this board.
  23. I think that's what I did. I'm not sure if I can find it now. It was about a year and a half ago while I was in the states. I went nuts there and found 700 some-odd in six months. I live in Istanbul, and there haven't been a lot of caches around, but we're starting to get more local people involved, and there are a few here that I can still find.
  24. What do you think about a cache that has a lock on it you have to figure out how to unlock, but you arrive, and the cache box is cracked and the lock isn't securing anything. You sign the log, but don't figure out the opening of the lock. Is that a find? Just curious what your thoughts are...
