  1. I loved taking my boyfriend's kids out caching in the Park - it was close to home, and not a lot of physical effort involved. That being said, I'm in agreement about the vacation caches. CP is a special case, and needs people with more than a passing accquaintance with it to hide caches there. Let's face it, someone who is only in the Park once a year doesn't know what the place looks like at any other time of year - when the leaves that were hiding a cache are not there, making it more likely to get Muggled, for instance. Vacation cachers also have a tendency to place caches in the most crowded parts of the Park, where they will almost surely get Muggled. How would we go about getting the abandoned caches archived so we can start up a new and improved round of caches? Julie
  2. Hey all, long time no post. Checking through the caches in my area, I'm seeing that half of Central Park has been plundered. Any idea why there are suddenly so many caches missing? And, anyone gonna join me in adding some new ones?
  3. I'm sure someone has already asked this somewhere, so a pointer in the right direction would be welcome. In two weeks, I'm flying to Pittsburgh for my college reunion, and it looks like there are some great caches nearby. I'd like to take the GPSr with me, but I don't know if airport security would allow it as carryon (as I'm only going for the weekend, I won't be checking any bags). Does any one know for sure if GPSr's are allowed on planes, as long as they stay off? I haven't had a problem traveling with laptop, iPod, Gameboy, etc., but I don't want to risk my GPSr being taken away from me at the airport. Any advice is more than welcome! Julie
  4. The flags are starting in Manhatten. There will then be a mad dash to come and get them. And return them to there rightful states. Every day your flag is in your state team gets 1 pt Every day your flag is outside your state team loses 1 pt Every day your flag is in opposing teams state they get 2 pts If a flag lands ourside of the Tri-state area it constitutes a redo. (so no cacher will intentionally take it over to California or Europe etc...) This is correct right, Brian and Joe? My head hurts. Mine too, and no, Avro, I didn't drink too much at the event. So many rules, so many ways to sabatoge. But wait, Brooklyn is definitely on Long Island, despite being part of NYC, so... Yeah, my head hurts.
  5. Well, that tells me all I need to know. I'm a redhead that turns into a lobster inside of an hour without 45 SPF sunscreen. If my choices are the sunburn and sun poisoning, or a mosquito bite, my answer is clear. I'll suffer the itchies. And chances are that if you contract West Nile, unless you are very old or very young, you're not even going to know it. http://my.webmd.com/content/article/66/79588.htm#q2

We do this when we're out with my boyfriend's kids as well. They both have such a good time with it that I can't say "No, you can't take something from the cache." We always make sure to put multiple objects back in the cache. And generally, the things that the kids pick are the items the adults wouldn't think twice about!
  7. Sounds interesting, and I like how you get the walking tour of the "rich and famous" from this one. I'd say adopt it - I'd certainly come out and do it!
  8. 5, without benefit of car or subway in NYC, with a 9 year old in tow. I think that should be a competitive caching event in and of itself.
  9. Depending on the date and my transportation situation, I'm in. And you can all laugh at me as I gasp for breath.
  10. Yep, that was it exactly. D'oh, Newbie mistake!
  11. Brian~Oh, I like that idea! Wow, this could be one that takes a couple of months to work out, but I think it would be awesome in the end... On something like that, would you think a virtual cache is better, or a traditional cache? I guess after working that hard I'd want a traditional so I could get something concrete out of it. hmmm - you've definitely got me thinking now! Mr. Snazz~do you remember which cache it was? I'd like to see the page for ideas. Jamie Z~No idea why I came up blank, but thank you - I will definitely go through these.
  12. Jamie Z~I searched for "cemetary" and came up with jack...where's spell check when you need it, right? I spent too much time reading Stephen King's Pet Cemetary as a kid! Snat~It's one of the bigger cemeteries in New York - Greenwood Cemetery. Combination historical (Horace Greeley, Boss Tweed, etc. buried there) and new. If I were going to do it, I would hide the cache near one of the historical graves because they're so hard to find without a map, but near the grave, not on top of it. A clump of trees nearby, perhaps. It's a great place to walk through, and I'd like to give others a chance to discover it. Erik~Thanks for the input. I wonder who I would contact in this case? There's a Greenwood Society, maybe I'll start there.
  13. I read a cache description at some point today that said it was hidden in a small cemetary...can't remember the name of it, but thought that was a cool idea since I live next to a huge one. So what's the ruling on cemetary caches? Are they allowed or taboo? Do special steps have to be taken if they are allowed?

CacheNCarryMA~That's awesome! I'm actually between Greenwood Cemetary and the Park, so your old neighborhood isn't that far off. And yep, the zoo is still open, and it's about time I paid another visit there. Great ideas for a multi-cache - maybe we should collaborate on one? AtoZ~A theme cache? Can you give a link? I want to see an example. Kai Team~Thanks for the pointer. blocko1000~I think an Altoids tin in a park would be devious. I like it!
  15. Harry~No, there was no log with the crab, unfortunately. Stoopid crab. Going to make another attempt at the Arch on Saturday. After we get a fresh coating of snow, of course. Maybe the crab will still be there, carefully wrapped in its napkin, in tupperware. That was just weird...if it's still there, I'm taking a picture this time. GG~I've had those moments. Mostly involving trash - it's New York, after all.
  16. I'm interested. Would it just be a hang out, get to know your fellow Cachers type thing, or more about going out and finding caches?
  17. My first thought on reading this was "Gee, I know of a really great roundabout that would make a perfect hiding place!" Seriously. The roundabout has crosswalks to it, it has a couple of benches in it, I don't see the problem. A roundabout is different from a traffic island in the middle of a highway, after all - many areas have roundabouts that double as park space, which developers have intended for people to walk on and rest on. Maybe you were talking about the giant traffic circles that have three lanes of traffic around them. Even in that case, however, I don't agree that it should be a rule. We have enough smarts to be using a GPSr, we should have enough common sense to know you shouldn't play in traffic, no?
  18. Wow, there was a TB in the false cache? That would have fooled me. Then again, a dead hermit crab in a napkin fooled me.... And methinks I might have to check out letterboxing as well. This stuff is gonna keep me busy for the rest of my life, isn't it?
  19. Snat, you won't eat eggplant, but you'll eat octopus? Yeccch!
  20. Avroair~LOL. I took a look at it, and might just go for it. Talk to you about it Tuesday night at the meet-up? Briansnat~I *love* getting out of the city, and when the weather gets a bit warmer fully intend to make my boyfriend go camping. We bought the tent last summer and never used it - that's going to change this year. And if we knock off a couple of caches on the way, he can't complain.

    First Hide

Leprechauns~Such as Wal-Mart or Target? We finally got a Target in Brooklyn, I'll have to check it out. Would a store such as Modell's or (trying to think of the Pittsburgh equivalent...) Dick's have it? JohnnyVegas~That was my other concern with the plastic bag camo. How would you control some well-meaning individual or Parkie from thinking it was trash and pitching it if they found it. I know I am not likely to look inside a plastic bag to see what kind of trash it is. And especially if I could feel a box inside it - I'd probably report it without opening it! You just can't know what a Muggle would do...
  22. I go caching by myself, but then again, I live in New York City. If women didn't go out on their own here, it would be a deserted place. I view Central Park and Prospect Park as my backyards, and don't have a problem being in either one alone, even after dark. Same with most neighborhoods in the city. That being said, I have had the occasional weird feeling and gotten out of wherever I was, but it would never stop me from going places on my own.
  23. Camo-crazed, why do I sense that your link is going to be something I spend my next two days at work doing until I can get outside to really cache again this weekend?
  24. Out of curiousity, has anyone else thought they found a cache, only to find that it wasn't? I ask because this happened to me this weekend while seeking The Arch. We found a small tupperware container at GZ, and inside it was a small dead hermit crab, carefully wrapped with a napkin. Now, on further reflection, that could be some kid's dead pet that just wasn't buried, but how strange is it that it was at GZ? I mean, what are the odds? For the record, I wasn't convinced it was the cache, but my boyfriend swore up and down that it had to be - it was too weird not to be. Has this (or something like it, I realize the odds of finding a dead hermit crab in tupperware are pretty slim) happened to anyone else?
  25. One of my blog buddies posted an entry about it two weeks ago. I thought it sounded fun, and asked her for details. She pointed me to geocaching.com, and when I found there was a microcache three blocks from my apartment, I had to try it. Found that one without GPS and decided I needed to jump into it with both feet. Two weeks later, here I am with a new eTrex Legend, and 7 finds, planning another round of cache hunting with my boyfriend this weekend (we took his kids last weekend and they fell in love with it). It's getting to be spring, I'm getting exercise while being outdoors, and I get to treasure hunt - what's not to love?
