  1. Sorry to say that you are. :-) http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/garmin/xseries...#biggestmicrosd Don't be sorry. It's a good thing to be wrong in this case (did anyone notice that it took all of 5 minutes before the 1st response to the OP? I love this forum!)
  2. I concur. I do to. Isn't the warranty already voided by the amount of damage? (I ask this rhetorically, since the consensus is to call and be really nice when asking if they'll help out )
  3. Very interesting info.....thanks. Well, I was trying to decide between buying a Bentley, Jaguar or Rolls Royce. Now I have rethink the whole thing
  4. Buy 9:00 PST the card was no longer available at buy.com
  5. Do not buy the cards from Garming.Just go to ny electronics store and pick up a micro sd card. They are getting cheaper everyday.I just noticed the price on the 2 gigs dropped $10 at Frys when I was there and the 1 gigs were pretty cheap but since my 512 holds more than I need no reason to upgrade yet I am not sure if the microSD card is available as an Ultra, but avoid those. Otherwise, I am using a 1G card and have seen posts from folks using 2G cards.
  6. That point is not in dispute. The email is. The owner can go to the cache or TB page and see the log whenever they want to. Why not have an option to control when/how often the email gets sent? Of course the aforementioned ability of getting free email accounts that have awesome filtering is the truly simple answer.
  7. Is it required that Mapsource be loaded on the laptop? I have Mapsource loaded on my desktop machine, but obviously wouldn't need nroute there.
  8. RC16 is transferring from GPS to GSAK. I don't do this, so I can't offer an answer.
  9. Well that sounds about like a problem I had. I found the solution buried somewhere back in this thread but will repeat here what I found I was doing wrong. at this step.... 4. click on the levels tab and hit the insert before tab do this until you have level0= through level5= You MUST select the bottom line of the defalt list BEFORE you click the "insert before tab" the first time. Hope this helps... let us know. It fixed my problem anyway! Thanks Thomas D This solved my problem. I the past, I always let the first line (Level0) highlight as the default when inserting the additional Levels when I was making Custom Maps using only Tracks and Waypoints and it didn't seem to matter. Boy!!!, does it ever matter with the Custom Topo Maps, it really causes some screwy things to happen when the Levels aren't in descending volume with regard to data. Thanks for your suggestion. This fixed my problem also! Note that I didn't see the text about clicking BEFORE in the instructions on the 1st or 2nd pages of this thread. These maps are awesome!
  10. I can answer the automatic change. The file gets re-created every time you run cgsmapper. But the registry only gets changed when you use regedit to read the file. I had been running cgsmapper via the "run" command rather than opening a "cmd" window. I tried the cmd window way (open cmd window, cd to garmin\custom, and execute cgsmapper in the local directory). No difference.
  11. I have the same question posted in another thread and wonder the same thing. I have explained in more detail the peculiarities of what I'm seeing here; http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=153294 I may have found my own problem. I was inspecting my test_pv.txt file and noticed that the Level0=20 and Level1=17 both had changed to 19 and 13 respectively. I have no idea when or how this would have happened but maybe once I correct these my topo lines will show up in a more normal/usable fashion. Level1 isn't supposed to matter. But I'll try anything (especially things that can be done quickly).
  12. OK - I have a transparent topo on top of my CN8 maps installed on my 60CSx. I can only see the topo lines (and some altitude markers) when zoomed out to at least .5 miles. Once I zoom in closer, all topo goes away. What'd I do wrong?
  13. I just realized that you have two options when downloading cgspmapper: the whole installation (including pdf manual, and a bunch of stuff), or just the executable. Guess what I did the first time!
  14. gpsmapedit took nearly 2 hours! That's one good reason to have a 2nd computer (marital harmony). I am not sure if step 3 in my quoted subset of instructions is a direct instruction or a foreshadowing of what is to be done after step 7. The reason I ask is because I wouldn't know what parameters to give in step 3. And most confoundingly I do not find any sub-folders under cGPSmapper, and consequently I have no test_pv.txt file. I feel like I am missing something that is starting me right in the face. Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am sooooo close!!
  15. I see that same image when viewing that area I wonder what it is, or is supposed to be. It is on the I-5 truck bypass. Maybe it is an abandoned semi trailer
  16. Any chance that the desktop machine went into screensaver mode while transferring the 800MB map set (the 64MB card obviously is transferring a lot smaller map set)? I have had problems when transferring files to my PDS when the screen saver kicked in before the transfer completed. Just thought it was something to mention.
  17. Fair warning: I am going to be down there in 2-3 weeks to visit friends in Eugene and Portland. Do you have a preferred weather phenomenon? How about Sunny and 90 Degrees in the middle of winter??? If she can make that happen (anything over 75 degrees will qualify), I'll buy her dinner every day she's here. On another note: I was up visiting family at Thanksgiving in 1990 when the I-90 bridge sunk. I grew up in Seattle and was kinda depressed that the "floating" bridge's demise was so ignominious.
  18. What a handsome youngster Jeff! Congratulations. Hydnsek, I really enjoyed caching with you last year, but I would respectfully ask that you NOT come to Oregon until you stop causing record setting weather!
  19. That's great that you searched first. It seems like a lot of people don't search first and end up waiting up to 30 minutes before someone here posts the answer These forums really are remarkable with the amount of timely and accurate information provided!
  20. In all of these cases the concern can be mitigated with an online log that says something like: "Found with BB, forgot to sign since my son was having such a good time in the wonderful location that you placed this cache!" rather than the "Found it" log on a 5-stage puzzle cache that a sock-puppet cacher might do.
  21. Perfectly said! Why worry and play policemen to check up on someone? If someone cheats they only fool themselves, nobody else. I've got better things to do in life than checking logs. Paranoia is not part of my character so NO I NEVER check my cache logs In general, I agree with this sentiment, however, I hardly feel I'm being paranoid. This is the first time I have ever deleted a log, or even bothered to check the log in this way. One might argue that he found all the caches and just didn't sign the logs. Based on the logs, the account, emails from the account prior to the logs to other cachers, past issues with the same cacher, etc. etc. etc., I doubt he attempted finding even one cache. The actual 2nd to find for the series asked me what was up with the logs for this person, since he didn't see his signature on any of the log sheets. I think there is a small measure of pride by local cachers for completing a series of puzzles that has taken time, effort, a gallon or two of gas, and in some cases lost sleep, not only to complete the puzzles, but to get out and make the finds. It seems to cheapen their effort by leaving such bogus logs alone. If someone wants to delude themselves, well, this is a free country, but I don't feel like enabling them either. These are the circumstances that justify monitoring the online logs. For a simple non-puzzle, non-multi cache I can't imagine giving a 2nd thought to whether a sock puppet cacher logged a cache. Oh wait, make that a 3-star or less, regular cache
  22. It's still nice to switch to rechargable batteries. Think green.
  23. Ditto I have found these two activities co-exist nicely. geo-event!
  24. There has been a copious amount of discussion regarding the "wandering" that the unit does while sitting on a desk with great reception of the satellites. The earlier descriptions of why are good ones, and the reason some others don't wander is because they do averaging by default which minimizes the variation.
