  1. I tend to have a high level of disdain for sites that require login just to browse. You know, like finding out how much some e-commerce site is selling a particular item for. I am thinking back to December when I learned of Geocaching via a newspaper article. I came to the site and found a cache less than a mile from my home, so I grabbed my daughter and off we went. I may have be turned off if this cache (the only one I looked at that day) wasn't viewable without an account.
  2. The finder takes the cache, logs it and emails the owner, who then updates the coords for the cache. Kind of interesting, but too much pressure for me, so far http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=13287

  6. Or if you just can't wait, Jeremy posted info about this in the "General" newsgroup. Here you can listen to it on RealPlayer or get the whole mp3 file. http://www.loe.org/ETS/organizations.php3?action=printContentItem&orgid=33&typeID=3&itemID=86 There is a thread of "reviews" of the story in the General section too

  8. I must admit (I guess this could be an answer to an unasked poll), that I learned about Navicache.com from this thread Maybe I'll post my next cache there as well as here on geocaching.com, after I send Jeremy $30 of course. Seems like there ought to be at least 1 within 125 miles of Portland on the "other" site.

  10. Not accusing anyone of anything, but isn't it possible that the description of a cache could have been changed after approval (or even after attention has been brought to it), from describing it as buried to describing it as simply hidden? Tough to police every cache page all the time.... Even the coordinates can be changed after approval, true?
  11. 6 within 100 miles? Wow! When will you find the time? Here in the home of geocaching (Oregon) the closest Navicache is over 125 miles away. I guess that speaks volumes.

  13. quote: .... As you can see, the last digits of the url are known as the cache ID#. Every single cache is assigned a number chronologically .... This makes perfect sense, but if I understand correctly, I check the next number: "Oh, it's in NJ" the one after it, "It's in Canada", the next one, you get the idea. I thought I spent too much time logged into the site

  16. I just want to say that I second what Majbach said, especially regarding TJWilson's willingness to share his apology, and to "see the light" so to speak. A rare thing indeed on public chats. quote: To my surprise and utter delight, none of what I anticipated would happen ever did. Kudos to everyone here for not letting that happen. Especially to TJ, whom I believe posted a very sincere apology. Congrats to Capt Prozac on such a fine cache. And Welcome Home! I wish I lived close enough to visit your cache. Hopefully a travel-flag will find its way out to Oregon.
  17. The polling option is pretty slick. I'll elaborate on my vote: I use the compass occassionally to decide which way to get going again after stopping and milling around. This tends to confuse the GPS (or maybe it's just me that's confused). Anyway, the Bearing on the GPS and the good 'ol compass usually get me headed the right direction.

  19. I don't always check the forums, but this one I was too late. But I couldn't have gotten away from the family anyway. Gosh, I seem to remember there were some secrets to success with Ms Pacman, but that knowledge is gone forever!
