  1. Enjoy your trip. Cache on! ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  2. I've included first finders' prizes in two of my caches. The first was a more difficult cache, so the FFP was a Best Buy gift card. The second was a very easy find, so it was just an award ribbon (something similar to 'First Place') that I found at the dollar store. I've considered them to only be prizes though, not something that has to be traded for. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  3. How far into Jacksonville will you be going, or will you be staying there for a while? If your stay is brief, I-95 can be seen from both Bringing Up the Baby Bridges and Rock Micro #2, and are along the same road (just be careful with all the one way streets in the area.) If you'll be in Jax a while, let me know and I'll point out some good area caches. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.

  5. Here's a picture of the Walgreens' brand Nitro Fresh Nitroglycerine Pill Case. The pic's not too big, and its more expensive than the other container, but its supposed to be 'waterproof, heat resistant, and light resistant.' ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  6. Some pharmacies also sell similar containers meant specifically for nitroglycerin tablets. The tablets can break down pretty easily once they're out of their original jar, so I'd imagine that these are pretty water and air tight. I haven't tried this though, so it may not work. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  7. The Jacksonville, FL park is a nice one, and has had a traditional cache in it for a while now - check out Bringing Up the Baby Bridges. I finally stopped by to find it last Friday, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I had no idea that there were so many of them though. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  8. Chiming in on this thread a bit late, but you can read about my experience at The Hatchet Creek Cache. It was rather disturbing, and finding that many ticks while going down the highway is not a fun experience. Apparently we found all of the ticks - not a single person has reported any problems before or after our visit. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  9. I'd taken an out-of-town friend to a cache last week, and stood on a bridge going over a small creek while he looked around for the container. A couple walked over the bridge behind me, saw GPS units, pens, a clipboard, and 'official' looking papers, and asked, "are you testing the water?" It was tempting to say we were, as other creeks in the area have high bacteria levels, but I just said that we weren't. I guess we looked rather strange though - they didn't ask any more questions after that. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  10. quote:Originally posted by StarshipTrooper:There are many versions of a tool that looks like a miniature cersion of a carpenter's nail puller (think "claw hammer"). Usually about 1.5-2" long, sometimes sold with a little magnifying glass. It's cheap and it's the simplest method for removing ticks (I've use it over 150 times!). Usually comes with instructions, so I won't go into that here. There are a couple of different tools that I've seen for removing ticks. I've never had to use one before (knock on wood), but I have heard that they work pretty well, and are easier to use than tweezers. I'd imagine they could be used on a dog just as well as humans. Smothering the tick with vaseline, painting it with fingernail polish, etc. is generally regarded as a bad way to remove a tick. It may get the tick out, but it also causes them to vomit their stomach contents into their host before they exit. When a tick is infected with Lyme Disease, the bacteria that causes the illness is often found in the tick's stomach, so having that vomited in your bloodstream isn't too good. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  11. I agree with a lot of what carleenp said. I like the idea of having the instructions tag, and the lower costs, but I'd be worried about the durability of the plastic used. Good field testing should answer my concerns though. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  12. An excellent idea as far as I'm concerned. I've been looking into doing this for the northeast Florida area, and plan on bringing it up at the next NEFGA meeting. Other cachers that I've talked to like the idea, so hopefully events based on it will have a good turnout. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  13. Mine tend to get used quite a bit at events, but I usually don't even turn mine on when I'm just out hunting. Even with a pretty good population of cachers in this area, we tend to not run into each other on the trail. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  14. Hi Jason! One place you may want to visit is Tampa Bay Geocaching, which has a lot of info specific to your area. Its a great site - even cachers from other parts of Florida use it. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  15. Just to let everyone know, the Northeast Florida Geocachers' Association (NEFGA) was officially started this past Saturday at this event. Board members are still busy working out all of the details, but we should be up and running soon. More information is/will be available at our group's current home, NEFGA. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  16. As others have said, thanks Crow for your work on helping us all out like this. There's a lot of great areas perfect for caching in Florida's state parks, and it'd be a shame to not be able to use them. Excellent work! ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.

The last I heard from him via his e-mail updates was from Islamorada (I believe) down in the Keys. Gotta admire someone who rides his bike from Tennessee to Key West during the summer... ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  18. I thought the idea was great. Not sure what size container you were thinking about using, but I bought the components for a small version a couple of weeks ago at Home Depot for less than $10. I may have to add your idea onto what I was originally planning. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  19. I'd love to hear the idea. I'm in the complete opposite corner of the country, and don't have any plans on going to Washington anytime soon. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  20. Not a problem at all. I often times end up with medication promotional items from work, job fairs, and pharmacy-related conferences. I've found that people outside of the healthcare field get a big kick out of that sort of thing, so I'll sometimes leave pens, stress relievers, and other trinkets with drug, drug company, or hospital names on them (people get real excited over Viagra pens...) ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  21. Not a bad mention, although I wouldn't call it a 'summer sport.' ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  22. Poor college student with less than a year to graduation. I dream of making the big bucks, so that I can pay off six years worth of student loans ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  23. And to make things worse, some people are deliberately taking bugs. Someone is going around the Gainesville, FL area taking TBs out of caches, and leaving a "Geocache Pest Control" business card, stating that the bug was removed. No longs online or in the logbook, just the card. Fortunately, some area cachers are on the case, trying to find the culprit. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  24. Yeah, I'd find myself still wondering about the whole break in thing every once in a while... Glad to see the cat in the glass again. Makes me think of bags of doots... ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  25. I'm not sure if this qualifys as a LTF, but with mine, the cache had been plundered quite badly - contents spread all over the place, many items had been partially burned (I guess it takes more than a lighter or matches to torch Rubbermaid!) I collected the container and contents, and e-mailed the owner about it, who then archived it. I was the last person to find it, but for a good reason. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
