  1. I've left FTF prizes in two of my caches. The first was a multicache with quite a few stages, so the prize was a Best Buy gift card (which was much appreciated.) The other cache was a pretty easy traditional; I found a First Place ribbon at the dollar store, and wrote the name of the cache on the back of it. Kinda goofy, but then so was the cache. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  2. My fiancee and I cache together, although she's not as 'obsessive' about it as I am. I'm usually the one who brings up the idea of caching, although she does enjoy most of the hunts that we do. I have a few finds on my own, or with someone else (trying to convince friends to give it a try), but for the vast majority of my finds, she was there with me. She stopped logging finds under her own account a long time ago - I just make sure to include her name in the logs so she gets some credit. We use just the one GPS, and I'm usually the one navigating. I'd say that its improved our relationship. Sometimes its the only chance we have to spend time away from other people and talk about different stuff. Its also given us some great memories and stories to tell other people about what we've run into. Like the time we had 100 or so ticks between us, and didn't discover it until we were going down the highway at full speed. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  3. I generally use just the regular Mozilla browser for the site, and haven't had any problems. Seeing your post though, I fired up a copy of Firebird that I downloaded last week. The main page came up fine, but when I clicked on "My Cache Page," it crashed. If I remember correctly, gc.com was the first page I tried to load when I downloaded the browser, and it immediately crashed (not the effect you want when trying out a browser that's so highly touted.) So you're not the only one. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  4. Why not? Count mine in as well. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  5. I've seen them at Office Depot by the check-out lanes. Never thought about using them that way, but perhaps I'll get one the next time I'm there. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  6. The TB Exterminator has been hitting caches for a few months now, primarily in the Gainesville area, but he/she has been branching out. I believe The Search for Gators was the first cache hit. My fiancee and I were at the cache not long after it was 'exterminated', and got to see the lowlife's calling card. The Jax Travel Bug B&B was a more recent target. If I remember correctly, several bugs were in the cache at the time, and all were taken. Other caches in the Gainesville area have been hit, although I don't remember which ones specifically. I've been warning other cachers to not bother leaving bugs anywhere near Gainesville until this is over. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  7. Paint, just so you know, I'm watching this thread very closely so I'll know where to look the next time you hide a cache. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  8. I started out with one of the fanny pack style bags not long after I started caching. It worked very well, but I was always interested in a Camelbak. Then I found the cheap ones at Target, and couldn't resist. I've used it on several caching trips this summer, and haven't had any problems with it. There's more room for my caching equipment, and it holds a lot more water. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  9. The big thing this weekend was the second meeting of the Northeast Florida Geocachers Association (NEFGA). The turnout was awesome - 40-50 cachers - some newbies who hadn't found their first cache, some veterans with hundreds of finds, and everyone in between. There was a lot of story swapping, a lot of planning for future events, and we worked in a game of Capture the Flag. Then after everyone left, my fiancee and I got to hide the ammo box that everyone brought booty nuggets for. Then on the way home, we got to find two micros - one in the pouring rain, the other in a mosquito infested area that had stumped us a couple of weeks before. An excellent weekend for me. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  10. quote:Originally posted by paintfiction:You have a Florida contact if you like. I've quite a bit of experience in hiding brutal micros so I'm ready to torture a few more souls. Jim Yeah, I'll vouch for paint. And if he can't do it, I'm certainly willing to step in. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  11. I guess Sangria would be alright, but Black Castles are the way to go as far as I'm concerned. Half Guiness, half New Castle - mighty tasty... Adding a shot of Bailey's makes it an Irish Car Bomb, but I haven't tried that yet. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  12. I don't see any problem with logging it as a find. I organized the CITO for Earth Day event for the Jacksonville area, and logged it as a find. As Lep said, I enjoyed putting together something for the park, and seeing the fun that other cachers had, but I didn't see any reason not to log it as a find. If you decide to not log your event as a find though, at least post a note to it. Its always fun to read what other cachers write about your event, and they'd probably like to know what the organizer thought of it as well. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  13. Just e-mail Zepyrus directly and ask him. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  14. The Texas Geocaching Association also has a good micro log. I used their template for the micro I placed recently. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  15. Sounds like I've been having the same problem as everyone else here. One thing I just found though - clicking on the geocaching.com discussion link brings me into the forum, and automatically logs me in. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  16. So long as the bug itself is something tasteful, it sounds like a pretty good idea to me. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  17. Not sure if this will help you or not, but here's a link to a thread in the South & Southeast forum. It describes the policies for Florida State Parks and South Florida Water Management District lands. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  18. Team Kender, Check out The Old Time Wooden Nickel Company. The link will take you directly to the page that has the blanks. These have worked pretty well for my nickels. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  19. I've heard of it before, but have never done it. I don't have any problem with it though, and have been meaning to buy some for a while to leave in caches. Whether its a good trade item or a great one just depends on luck. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  20. It would probably make the search easier if they were always placed on a metal object, but as others have said, it can't always be assumed. A lot of them that I have found were attached to metal objects, but then I've also found them in hollow areas of living trees. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  21. Just a thought on this - doesn't the V have an 'on road' mode and an 'off road' mode? If the cache was close to pavement, and the GPS was set to the on road mode, that might explain it - its still trying to navigate based on roadways. Of course, if you'd hiked a mile in to find this one, I doubt that's it. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  22. Don't know how challenging mine would be, but what they hey. Here it is. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  23. quote:Originally posted by Natureboy1376:What we do though is if one of us finds it we keep looking move away from the cache and yell found it. then when the other finds it we log our visit... My cousin introduced me to a similar idea that I've heard is really popular for hunting in groups in the Buffalo, NY area. Its the same sort of thing - when you find it, walk away from it, and after a few minutes of continued 'looking', yell 'Huckle Buckle Beanstalk!!!' Sure it sounds silly, but its a lot of fun. For areas where we need to be quieter (urban caches), its more of a whispered 'Huckle Buckle!' As for your daughter logging the previous finds, go for it. When my fiancee finds a cache with me, I include her in the log that I write. She doesn't always have a chance to log her finds, but sometimes goes back to try to catch everything up. Her log is generally just 'found this with GatoRx.' ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  24. I went with the stamp route for my nickels. I came up with the design for each side on my computer and sent them in to a company that makes stamps. I ordered a box of wooden nickel blanks, and stamped each side, using a regular, run-of-the-mill ink pad. Its worked really well, and I haven't had any problems with the ink running or anything like that. I think the total price for all of the materials was less than $45. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.

Not sure what part of Florida you're in, but I've heard rumors that Whataburger is coming to Jacksonville and the surrounding area. I haven't had one in about 15 years, so I can't wait. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
