  1. Try Lost outdoors map maker. You can enter in as many points as you like and see them in a topo or satellite view. Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  2. Congrats once again on this notable achievement. Not bad work for only 6 months!!! Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  3. And he had to do it on one of my caches too. A great milestone achievement, but don't rest on your laurels too long JoeC is right behind you at 199! Something hidden. Go and find it. 5. Volunteers of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club do a lot trail maintenance in and around the DC Metro area as well as along the AT. I know they could always use a hand. I just recently signed on as an overseer for a 1.5 mile section of one of our local trails. We took out several bags of trash, repaired a bridge and cleaned out and fixed up several water bars today. Lots of fun - my way of contributing back to the trails!!! Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . 6. May 1st still open? Just sounded good and I didn't see it on the list Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  7. I sent off an email yesterday to invite 10-15 individuals in the area who may not have seen the posting. So far 2 of them have responded as not being able to make it. I think a few are weather dependent and don't want to say yes until they know for sure. Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. 8. The Bunny Man isn't very hard at all, but if you believe the story... Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  9. In DC:Secret Garden and Neglect are walkable from Foggy Bottom on the Orange/Blue line. DC: The Disenfranchised Colony might be walkable from Woodley Park. In VA: Great Scott is walkable from Pentagon City on the Yellow/Blue Line. Story Time might be near the Yellow/Blue Line, but you need to figure out the puzzle for this one first. There may be a few others that you may also want to consider, but the bottom line is that none of those I have mentioned is really all that close by to the Metro (Brentbeebe's are much closer to the stops). I would say that most of those linked above involve a 1.5 - 2 mi one way hike at a minimum. Depending on when you are in the area, snow may be a complicating issue as well. If you are able to get out during the day, there are some interesting virtuals in Arlington Cemetary (right off the blue/yellow line) if you are interested, but get your walking shoes out for those as well. I hope this helps somewhat. Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  10. I already let him beat me to a few. I might agree to still finding it first and then not burying it under a pile of leaves 50 ft away though if he's nice Gotta go to get a head lamp now... 12. It just depends on how much you want to walk and/or drive. Fairfax City (I'm assuming this is where you are staying based on your comments) is centrally located to many caches, but has none of it's own as far as I know. If you plan to travel into DC via Rt 66 or 50 then Dead Drop or Bosco's Run might work as well as those mentioned previously. Just run a zip code search for your hotel or something nearby like 22030. There are now several traditional caches in DC that may be of interest as well. Most of them are away from the mall area though. Something hidden. Go and find it. 14. That's using your head. Went out and found just one today. Wish I had some snow shoes. Gore-Tex doesn't work so great when the wet is coming in from the top! Something hidden. Go and find it. 15. This cache sounds like it's on the base. I really don't think it's there anymore but no one has logged it since May. My travelbug went here and has not been heard of since. Can't say that this was a bright idea and I was very surprised to see that it was approved. Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. 16. I can't tell anymore. Once I went over 9,999 the display is blank. Short of resetting, is there anyway to get this to show? Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you . . . Go! - Rudyard Kipling "The Explorer"
  17. I like the idea but it can make for a huge file. I have the tag attached to my GPS V and it goes where I go. After nearly 400 finds though it sometimes takes a while to open. 19. Zartimus, I'm starting to think I made Confession? too hard, since no one has gotten it yet. My intent was to make it a head scratcher, but doable. I emailed a clue to some of the local cachers I know are working on it. Let me know if you would like a hint also. Based on the feedback, I may add the hint permanently. Something hidden. 21. 22. I like using obviously wrong places that are relatively nearby (<3M), or someplace that has significance to the cache which is also nearby. The idea is to keep it close but hopefully make it clear there's no cache there to someone who just loaded the coordinates without noticing its a puzzle cache. So far I have used a mall, a post office and an old building as bogus coordinates. This should not throw off TB mileage significantly and at least gets you in the right general area. I have a 5/5 sitting up near the top of my closest list, but I can't say that it bother's me. Although I have heard from a few people that they don't care for puzzle caches. Maybe a separate category would be nice. Could the existing ? category work for this though? Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. 23. I found the Burke Lake Park cache today, which was, and still is archived - but it's still there!! The original cache was: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=238 but it looked like the coordinates were off since nothing changed in the description of the current version http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=373 It may be not be technically the oldest since Elvis has the updated version by 9 days, but I was glad to see it was still hanging in there. 24. For those new to this, there will be an event cache that will appear in the next month or so that will list the location and details of the meeting. You can then post a note to that cache and let us know you are interested in attending in that manner as well as on the forums. JoeCthulhu and I have been discussing the details off line. I think (and hope) there will be a good showing for the day. Hope to see you there!!! Something hidden. Go and find it. Go, and look behind the Ranges -- Something lost behind the Ranges. 25. Burke Lake is one of the bigger parks in the area that is still very accessible. It kind of reminds me of Lake Frank up in MD. The nearby area was under consideration for a while as the site for a suburban DC airport. Dulles of course wound up out in Chantilly/Herndon so the area got to stay relatively undeveloped for a while. Of course if this weather continues you won't have to walk around the lake since the freeze may allow you to go straight across!! Here are a couple of links to preview the area: http://www.restonpaths.com/BurkeLake/ http://www.patc.net/hiking/destinations/burklake.html http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/parks/lakefront.htm There is no fee to enter in the off season, but the railroad, carousel, concessions and I believe boat rentals won't be running either. The trail is normally pretty crowded, but most folks just stick to the main 4.5 mi trail loop. The back area is where most of the non-water land area is and where a present cache is already located. A call to the park confirmed that there are no reservations or fees required to use any of the picnic areas at that time of year - it's pretty much first come first served. I still think the better gathering point is at a nearby indoor venue of some kind, so that may be the next decision point. I have wandered around the back wilderness area and done the trail loop a few times, so I know there is good potential for more caches. Something hidden. Go and find it.
