  1. How are you getting to and from the airport (assuming you're flying)? You may be able to drop them off over there. GC13NPK Mickey's backyard is about a 30 minute walk each way from the Magic Kingdom entrance. That's the closest to a park I could find, so I suggest on your way in or out. Edit: Sorry for the repeat info. Isonzo Karst posted as I was typing.
  2. Strangely, I found a garbage one just earlier today. It was a typical hose, with a small nano in one of its ends. I looked at it and threw it to the side, spending another ten minutes before realizing my error.
  3. What do you mean temp cache? Permanance rules require caches to plan on staying for at least three months. If you means caches without a page, then no, you can not log them.
  4. You missed my point. There are plenty of LEO's, bridge inspectors and mall cops who know about geocaching and are cool with it, in part because of good publicity like CITO events, tourism bureau promotions, and educational efforts that have been undertaken for years by geocachers at the local level. As for the November 15 date, when was the last time that a state highway department brought in a job on time and on budget? The mall cops in my area know about caching but they aren't cool about it. If you find it and they find you, it's their's. If you don't find it and they find you, they send in guys to take it anyways. The only reason there are still caches there is because the security never had the time to tell the reviewer to stop. They have, however, never called in the bomb squad as far as I know. When one cache got LEO-muggled the LEO said "Management says it's just a treasure hunt".
  5. hmmmm... Heres a good example why it's a bad idea.
  6. Something like GCJBJ1 is the closest that you would be allowed to do. I think even that sort of falls under a commercial nature. You also have to sign up. Remember, just because one cache does something dosen't mean it's allowed.
  7. Maybe you shouldn't be trolling around looking for problems in distant areas. If you have a concern about a geocache in your local area, by all means, contact the owner, log a "Needs Maintenance" or (if all else fails), log a "Needs Archived." I do want to strongly discourage you from "testing the system" in this random manner, however. I was just trying to help out a bit. I really had no idea, and that's why I asked for a kind reminder if it was a bad idea. It was, so it won't be done again. Sorry.
  8. That's because the owner acted before the reviewer had time. He also sent an e-mail talking about how he tried archiveing it, but couldn't find out how. Maybe I'll try another cache.
  9. I posted one vigilante log as an experiment. it can be found at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?ID=1859335 . We'll see how the reviewer takes care of it as an offical answer.
  10. If I know of a cache that has been disabled since november. There are no posts since it was disabled. Should I post a NA or a note?
  11. Since school cache programs are not run by Groundspeak, it's up to the school what happens there. In one in my district, the caches were clear tupperware containers hidden around school. They didn't place a memorial cache, but maybe I should run over and place a memorial across the street.
  12. Even non-rural schools have no metal detectors. I live in suburban chicago, and if we had metal detectors added at my school, we'd all be scared out of our minds. 95% of teachers support bad decisions if they make Knowschad happy in some way or another. The high schools in the area, are worse then junior highs. There is an employee hired just to watch the front (only unlocked) door, and all people, young or old, must wear an ID at all times around their neck. For non-californians, LA has barbed wire at the base of most highway signs to prevent vandalism. Not exactly the same crime rates as middle of nowhere Kansas.
  13. To sum up some of the higher up posts, here are three possibilities for a school cache. a) It's outside a house where someone is home schooled (unlikely) b ) There is no permission; therefore, it's a bad idea. c) There is permission, but it's still a bad idea. Police don't know about it, and if teachers change, the new teachers won't know about it, etc. Just because you see a cache doesn't mean it's a good idea. As I mentioned above, one cache leaves a finder clearly visible from the running track used almost every day during running season. I would definitely not place it if I was the owner. Keep in mind Knowschad is a charter member. This means he helped start geocaching more or less. It's not a bad idea to listen to his concepts.
  14. I found one example in Colorado, so I think so. Another example was up in Wisconsin. If you want to see the Colorado one on a map, it's right by the pike's peak railroad station.
  15. I am also sort of curious to. Can you PM me? I have 154 finds, and no thefts. Chicagoland has not really had a muggle problem. The hiders are smart enough to be invisible to non-cachers. As much as I've seen missing caches, I think they were all clueless people or mother nature.
  16. In this case, the reviewer probably would not publish it, as the owner isn't hitting a few keys to make the adventure safer. If it was in the description with proper precautions, then I wouldn't have a problem. Not all GPS devices download the attributes, but most download the description.
  17. We have bad things in and near caches. We have bad people in and near caches. Whats next? Oh yeah! Bad caches themselves. This is the thread to post about all those terrible cache ideas that litter our game board. I found a cache with coordinates 200 feet off. I'd miss it, except the FTFer drove past me on the way out. Sorry if this is already a thread. I've never seen one, and it isn't on the first few pages.
  18. Don't forget, it depends on some other variables. Years ago, rules were not as strict. Also, reviewers have 100's of caches each day. It's easy to let one or two slide.
  19. Bad advice removed. Didn't think it would be taken seriously. As a general rule, if the land is used by the school or within 100 feet of land used, I suggest not placing. Of course, also use common sense. I forgot about that guideline. Thanks knowschad,
  20. Just another note, but google maps can tell you if land is of a school or park district. Parks are green, schools aren't marked at all. You can ask your reviewer or school who owns the land for a more accurate answer. If you can't tell where it is based on google maps, you can try e-mailing me. I live far enough away not to try an FTF. If it is approved, I would make it premium only. Remember, your reviewer wants to work with you to publish the cache. Feel free to clarify with him.
  21. Are you sure it's school grounds? If it's a park, it's not school grounds, just grounds the school uses (at least where I live). If the school dosen't use it and it's not theres (and far enough away) it should be fine. The closest i've seen to a school cache is one next to the area the school used. I have no idea if it's the same park or not. Either way, finders are 100% visable from the mile track the school uses for gym clases and track.
  22. That would be a bit better. Instead of green paint, however, you can buy cammo spray paint. I still would reccomend putting it far in the woods. Out there, caches can be in plain sight and not get muggled. Edit: Sorry. I wrote my reply while knowschad wrote his.
  23. Not as far as I know. However, you can mark it visiting every cache you visit to keep track of your mileage. This way, previous holders won't be upset it stopped moving.
  24. The idea sounds pretty interesting. The problem is, however, that a string is more visible then a cammoed bison tube. Other than that, the idea sounds good.
  25. For the Geomate junior, that is a good choice for some. If you have about $20 more, however, you can get an eTrex Venture HC. Although it's better, if you want something simple, want to do it with kids, or don't want to spend as much time caching, go with the Geomate Junior. My recommendation is to get a cheap one, and if you want something better, sell it for 75% of its price and buy a better one.
