  1. Hey all, I was asked to help out at this years Raptor festival by putting on a Geocaching tutorial. What do I need to do to get this going? Do I need permission from Geocaching.com? There was talk of putting out a cache for people to find. What would be the best way to do this. I am just not sure how the logistics of this will work out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Here's the Website for Raptor Fest http://www.bridgerraptorfest.org/currentevents.html Clayton
  2. I have Garmin GPSmap 60C Garmin Legend B/W The Legend was my first and now the kids use it on cache hunts. The 60C my wife found on close out cheap and got it for me.
  3. Thanks Team 5150 for taking care of Sid for us. The kids were fired up to see he was at Mt. Rushmore since we visited there so they understand where it is. The kids were also excited to hear he was heading for Colorado since we use to live there. Thanks again.
  4. I guess I was hoping for a Benchmark or a concrete monument but all I got was a cruddy little sign. At least it was only 14 miles out of our way down a bad gravel road. I noticed this sign was by Belle Fourche. This area was just north of there. http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/SD3127/
  5. Ok we took a trip to see Mt. Rushmore and the rest of the fun things to do around Rapid city. On our way home we noticed a sign for the geographical center of the U.S., It was even on the road atlas so we decided to check it out. This is what we found. Road to the center What we found when we got there. GPS cordinates disappointing find.
  6. I am looking at getting City Navigator. I am just not sure if this will work in my computer. Its not exactly brand new so I'm concerned about it not working. Is there anyway to know if it will work before I buy it? Thanks
  7. Well your TOPO maps do not do Autorouting so the unit is using the base map to get you around. I had this same problem not long ago with my Map60c. I guess you need to get city navigator to route better. Hope this helps.
  8. Thanks for the help. Its a bummer about the data fields but it will be nice not having to zoom back in after every turn. Thanks again.
  9. Hello, I just recently purchased a Map60c which is a step up from my Legend. On the map page you can add data fields which are nice but they are huge. Is there any way to make these smaller? Also when its Navigating whenever you make a turn the thing zooms way back out and its impossible to see where you are without zooming in again which isn't real handy when your driving. Is there a way to change this so it keeps you at the same zoom level as before?? Thanks for any info you can provide on this.
  10. Hey thanks. Do you have a company website? My plan is to retire in that area... Well I got along ways to go before that.
  11. Ok my wife spotted a good deal on a GPSmap 60C and bought it for me. I know its not the Cx but its still a big step up for me from my Etrex legend. I am looking at getting some maps for it but I only have 56mb of memory to work with. I have Mapsource TOPO maps which are nice but useless for the cities in my area. They are very out of date. I have them loaded up now and the Autorouting feature takes us the oddest ways and doesn't want to route in my home town because half of it is missing. What mapping software is the one I should go with. Thanks
  12. Ok I have a laptop with Windows 2000 and I have a Garmin Etrex Legend. Is there anyway to get this combo to autoroute?? I know the Legend on its own is not capable of this but is it possible? I have Mapsource TOPO now but I don't think it has the Autoroute ability. What would I need to get this working if it even is possible. Thanks
  13. Ok I have run a couple of pocket queres for my area and I have a question. Since my area isn't cach rich I really don't need to save more caches but I would like to update the ones I have in my PDA and GPS. I have an old palm Vx with cachemate and I have a garmin Legend GPS that I use with Easy GPS. I just want to update the logs and delete the ones I have found and save any new caches in the area. What is the easiest way of doing this? Can I just rerun the last quere? Will this create duplicate cache logs in my palm and or GPS? Thanks for the help.
  14. This is great I am learning alot. I will have to dive into this more indepth. My wife thinks this is the most boring thing in the world to get excited over. Thanks everyone for the info. One more question? Is this disk going to be on the Geocaching web site?? Thanks again
  15. Ok I found this pipe cap out in Yogo Gulch. I did not get a GPS reading off of it and I can't seem to find it on the Geocaching page. I can only tell you of other benchmarks nearby. It was located in Judith Basin County. Montana (MT) RW0032 and RW0033 Are the closest BM to the one I'm looking for. The postal zip code from that area is 59452 What are other ways for finding these things. Heres a pic. Thanks
  16. Thanks everyone for the great responses. I will take your advise and look more deeply into what I need to do to get started. Its nice to be a part of good group of helpful people. Thanks again
  17. Ok little background. I went to school for Auto Mechanics. I worked at Jaguar for awhile until I needed to move back to Montana to deal with a crazy ex and see my daughter more. Now I am working at a Technologies company and its ok. I deal with Shipping and Recieving. Any ways I got into Geocaching and then became interested in Benchmarking. I Love maps and could look at them all day. I looked to a career in Cartography or GIS/GPS and they both look very interesting. Can anyone tell me what I should do to get my foot in the door. Should I go back to school and get a degree? Any info would be nice. Thanks
  18. Ok I have an old IBM Thinkpad that had win95 on it and I upgraded it to Win2000. I have a cd rom so thats not an issue I had to deal with. I have Mapsource TOPO and also a mapping program called All topo which is basically Forest sevice type maps. Both of these do real time tracking. I have my Garmin Legend hooked thru the Serial port and it works great. I would recommend something you can get online with via wireless so you can stop at various hotels and resturants to get access to internet for updating geocaching logs. I built the mount for the laptop using pipe but you can get them cheap off ebay.
  19. Me an my wife went to get this cache I use to live in this area and new about the snakes. On our hike we ended up seeing 3 snakes, a common racer, a bull snake and a western rattlesnake. It is posted all around the area to be aware of rattlesnakes. I guess its the season.
  20. That seems like a neat tool to use. I'll have to try that out next time. Thanks for the info.
  21. I know there are better ways but here is what I did for a trip we just had. I downloaded geocaches into Google earth (this is available if your a premium member) then i just found caches along our route. We don't do high volume caching so this wasn't a problem for me. I think I found about 15 caches that looked fun and were close to the locations I was going to be at. I'm sure there is easier ways that render alot more caches but this is what worked for me. Having fun is the most important part
  22. Booya! Nice ride! Here's my 2000 Jeep Cherokee, currently at 95,000 miles. And here it is on the way to the Offroad Adventure Cache. Here's a video clip of it in shake & bake mode. My alternate cachemobile is my Giant Rincon SE with handlebar-mounted Garmin eTrex. Looks like we need to start a Geocaching XJ Club. Heres mine Heres another one for the XJ club its an 88 and we use it for camping, hiking, offroading you name it.
  23. I found a website in my paperwork I got with this benchmark. Thought I would pass it along. http://geositu.com/
  24. Ok I am new to Benchmarking in General. Me and my family recently went to Devils Tower on Vacation. I found this in the gift shop.
  25. Thanks for the info cardinal. I am liking this paperless thing, I just have to get the wife onboard. She just thinks that I wanted another gadget. Well shes kinda right.
