  1. Umm, where's THAT rule posted? Sound on cache pages may not be the preference of some because they are slower to load, but if there is an actual prohibition, I've yet to find it anywhere. I'm sure I'll be swiftly corrected if I'm wrong. To be fair, there's no rule against it, formal or informal, but it's basically web etiquitte. Everyone's musical tastes differ, and there's a pretty good chance that I won't enjoy being forced to listen to something you may like while trying to read your cache page (or any other web page you might make.) And remember, even if it sounds catchy at first, it'll get annoying as it plays OVER AND OVER AND OVER while I read the cache page. There's no good way to put music on a web page, anyway, because MIDIs are extremely irritating (poor quality synthesized instruments as opposed to actual sound data) and MP3s are too large. Regardless of the format, there's absolutely no reason why you should force someone to listen to something while they're viewing your cache page. If it's actually relevant to the cache (which is unlikely), you can link them to the file instead. Putting music or sounds on a web page is an extremely annoying waste of bandwidth. THE BEST ANALOGY I CAN COME UP WITH IS TYPING IN CAPS LOCK ALL THE TIME. THERE'S NO RULE AGAINST IT, BUT IT SURE IS ANNOYING, HUH?
  2. Probably easier to brute-force the online verification tool. Not nice to the owner, though, because you could end up doing some damage to his/her server... and if your ISP or the server's ISP thinks you're attempting a DOS attack, you could end up in big trouble.
  3. I use Skype; I'll add you to my list. My Skype name is Tidalflame. I don't know where my microphone is right now, but I guess I'll find it if anyone gives me a call. There's actually a list called "Geoskypers" for Geocachers using Skype... you can check that out here Edit: Woops, wasn't paying attention - guess you already know about that. Well, I added you to my list, anyway.
  4. I haven't noticed any problems. While I agree that humans are still better at HTML than WYSIWYG editors, I think that if you're having problems with HTML Tidy it's probably your own fault. HTML Tidy is hardly perfect, but it shouldn't wreak havoc on your HTML if it's written properly. Oh, and sound on webpages is a big no-no.
  5. Oh please no, not country. I'd rather be skewered with a pitch fork.
  6. Well actually......... It's in the works. I have to figure out how not to spoil. I have a few ideas so I'm going to play and see what happens. I also have to read the micro thread (all 50 or so pages) to see if there are any good pictures out there. I've read it; there are some pretty amazing ones. Hm, I'll have to see if there's a way to burn VCDs without paying $70 for the full version of Roxio (I've got the "Basic" version which came with my computer; it can't do VCDs.) If I find anything, I'll post it here, but right now I'm heading out for a long hike and perhaps a new cache hide =)
  7. A much larger snake found in the same area as the other one I posted: She had some baby snakes with her, too. At least, I think they were babies.
  8. Must be one hell of a nonsensical directory/page name, 'cause I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works. Unless you were being sarcastic... blah, I'm curious now. I'm quite interested in what will be different with the new system, though. Locationless caches aren't really my cup of tea; perhaps this system can change that. To be honest, what I'd most like to see is a rule preventing people from limiting locationless caches to one-log-per-object. I know, rules are bad and all, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth... seems kina like a cache where only the FTFer gets to participate.
  9. It could be done, but it seems unlikely. I can't think of any way it could be done without placing a pretty big burden on approvers.
  10. For the sake of curiosity, I mapped it, and it appears to be about 40km south of PG. If you messed with the longitude enough you could probably get it right on the highway, so it shouldn't be too hard if you're willing to do that much driving... Good luck to both of you.
  11. Another great video. I loved the "Not Tonight, Dear" cache in the Tylenol bottle... clever little joke, haha. Seeing as you've probably seen some really creative hides having found 140+ caches, I'd love to see highlights of some of the most creative hides you've seen around PG, or elsewhere. Your "Power to the Cachers!" cache is a good example, I think Of course, the problem would be that any such footage would be a pretty bad spoiler, so perhaps it's not the greatest idea. But I love seeing creative hides
  12. I wonder if form-mailed letters would be effective... I'm not suggesting that we spam them; that would just be bad. However, as many people who feel strongly about this issue likely do not have the time, knowledge or skill necessary to write a letter to Parks Canada themselves, perhaps an effective tactic would be to get someone to write out a nice, brief formal letter which could then be form-mailed to them. I think it might give them a better idea of the number of people who feel strongly about this issue, but on the other hand it might just annoy them and/or make us look lazy. Thoughts?
  13. Oh my god... FINALLY! They're HORRIBLE maps but at least we've got SOMETHING now. I sure hope Groundspeak didn't pay too much for these, though, considering that they're more than a year late and ridiculously inaccurate. Even so, I'm really glad that we've finally got some maps.
  14. From one of my caches: The low quality photo really doesn't do it any justice... And also, from Wild Waters near Jasper, Alberta: (High-res versions of the last two photos here and here respectively.) I've seen lots of beautiful things while caching, though... if anyone wants me to dig up more/post some better quality pics just PM me.
  15. Thus far, a big fat 0 but I'm hoping I'll meet some soon.
  16. You can rate my gc.com caches on their site? You answered your own question:
  17. That's a neat idea, now you just need to make it work on other browsers.
  18. I like puzzles, so I'm planning one soon. I still haven't entirely come up with an idea, but I'm thinking about making it a hacking challenge of sorts - I set up a little website with the coordinates and potential finders have to circumvent the security to get the cache. The only problem is whether or not local finders will be up to it!
  19. I think TerraCaching has some sort of cache rating system...
  20. Yes, WorldWind is quite good. Does it really take 2gb? I didn't notice..
  21. Eh, I don't know. The reviewer system on this site is hardly perfect, but few things are. I can certainly see potential for problems, but I've never actually had any, so I'm not bothered by it. If I was, well, there's always TerraCaching (they have a different review system.) By the way, thanks for reviewing my caches, mtn-man =)
  22. Heh, that just goes against common sense. I mean, someone might come looking for the cache! Thus, it's much better to find a nice place that's nowhere near any caches. Not that I'd know anything about that kind of thing, of course.
  23. And, conversely, S = South Latitude, E = East Longitude N = + S = - E = + W = - Probably made that more confusing rather than less... whoops.
  24. While we're at it, let's add new cache types for funny-shaped houses, pink cars, Starbucks stores, square watermelons, and theatres with more than 6 screens. </sarcasm> I mean no offense by that, but seriously, we can't just go adding new cache types for specific objects...
  25. If you use a good browser (for example, Firefox) you can always change your text size.
