Having no input from some of my peers here .... I guess I am treading new ground!
I loaded 6.8.0 MapSource and of course it did nothing. After consulting Microsoft's website, I determined that the problem was probably due to an over/under voltage sense on the USB hub. While talking to John (from Garmin tech support), I suggested we try a direct hook-up bypassing the 4 port hub on the desktop unit. VOILA ... MapSource recognized the unit ID. (but the laptop had no hub????) I quickly tried a Map and Waypoint transfer and it worked. Plugging the hub back in and reconnecting the cable .... OH NO Mr. Bill .... PC can't find device. Next I tried the laptop again (No Hub) and again it does not recognize the device. We use the laptop on vacation so this is not acceptable. Tomorrow we call and arrange to send the unit back to Garmin for another replacement.
For the record .... USB devices can draw a maximum of 500 milliamps for each connection. If a device attempts to draw more than this, the specification reccomends that the computer be able to disable that specific port until the computer is cycled (this is called "suspending" the port). In addition, if the device draws less than 50 milliamps, the port never becomes active.
Hopefully my experience will help another if the issue of PC mouse lock-up / PC freezes / unit ID not recognized .... ever occurs.
It's really nice to have 2 60C units and when one works and not the other .... it's definitly not a driver issue!
It's also nice to be a computer hardware engineer ... because I actually route circuit boards (lay out and connect the chips) and understand this over / under voltage suspend the interupt / request stuff.
