  1. So what would you do? I'm open to any ideas.

Geocachers in general like to preach the good land manager song. Practice it. Choose areas with low impact value. Take the wind out of the attacker's sails. Don't place a cache in an eco sensitive area.

If your cache is in the arena of attack, make it a PMO. It makes it easier to track who the interested parties are and a common denominator can be discerned from the logs.

In cases of publicly owned land, make sure you have the land manager's permission and have it posted permission has been provided. LIkewise private property. Post it is private property and hidden with permission. This creates ownership of the cache (as not abandoned) and validated use of the land.

Don't put too much value into the cache. It gets expensive to keep replacing them. Minimize the losses.

And most of all, let this thread die. The attention is enough to keep the yahoo at it. This isn't the first, second or third time this has happened. They all get bored and move on; but only when they don't raise the hackles and draw threads like this.

I agree and do so while hiding and seeking a cache. There has been a few times where I have walked away because I did not feel comfortable with the location. As far as the caches on my property go, I state in the listing that this is property that I own and is a livestock area so make sure to keep the entry gate at the parking area closed. So far no problems. I still like the trail cam idea and will use it if I start having problems with theft or vandalism. Hopefully I won't have to.

  2. Blues man you and I are thinking the same way. Trail cam all the way! i have been wanting to do something like that. Cache the cacher so to speak. Of course you would have to find a nice juicy "eco sensitive" spot to draw out the person. Then make it a real nano in the woods so a lot of digging around would have to be done. Then wait until this nut job shows up and digs before reviling there is a camera. Of course full permission at the sight would be given and the nut job would not bother to check that out. I have a reclaimed rock quarry out here in Ohio that would be perfect if this ego cacher was around here.

This is clearly not thinking your strategy out all the way. You would have gone the distance to prove their point. This cache idea would turn into more of a black eye for Geocaching than for the self-acclaimed defender. The PR fallout would be ugly for geocachers.

No black eye if it's on my property (which I have 4 hidden on). Turn any pics over to the local sheriff's department and have them cited for trespassing and theft. That's how we handle things on this side of the mountains.

Re-read the text that is bolded. Private property or not; it is clearly not the right direction to go in and I don't care which side of the mountains you're on.

No need to dumb it down, I did not post that. I don't bury micros in the woods. So what would you do, just let the eco nuts have there way and keep on destroying the caches we placed (with permission) and hope maybe they will stop someday? It will never happen. Got to nip it in the bud. If I catch somebody on MY property stealing personal property (even if it's an ammo can) I will have them prosecuted and I don't care if it produces a black eye within the eco nut community. You will not be able to please them no matter what you do.

Ease off and read the post. I didn't dumb it down and I didn't declare you posted it. You did reply to my post though, and your reply was out of context to my post. Thus my clarification. Herein lies the problem with hot heads.

So what would you do? I'm open to any ideas.

Shouldn't be to hard. Looking at the pics I would say he/she has a thing for mushrooms.

  6. Just got a few days off, so I am trying to attend.

Anyone know of a good affordable campground nearby? (I could camp in my minivan, so a tent spot works for me.) I've been looking at motels but I'm not thrilled by what I has researched. Heck, I would even consider someone's driveway as long as the neighborhood is good.

Where is the start/meeting spot on the 20th?

(I would assume GCQAANH Whitman Webcam)

As always, I'll looking for a ride as a navigator or ???\

(Need a good spot to park my van for the day)

There is a campground on Hwy 12 before Touchet. I don't know the name of it and can't seem to find it on any search engine. I know nothing about it except I have seen the sign and sometimes see travel trailers parked there. Probably 25 minutes from WW. I don't know of any in Walla Walla anymore. I will try to ask around.

I did another search and came up with this:

Public Campgrounds: There are no public campgrounds within the City of Walla Walla. Some out-dated web information indicates a camping facility within Fort Walla Walla Park, adjacent to the Museum. The City of Walla Walla closed the site in 2003.

Private Campgrounds that include tent camping

  7. Construction update: 13th Avenue between Dell Ave and Cherry Street will be closed for the next 6 to 8 weeks for a long overdue rebuild. I was in that area the other day and 13th was under construction all the way south to Rose Street.

Thanks. I contacted City of Walla Walla Engineering about this last week, and they sent me a map of the closure, confirming what you've written above. I've modified my draft route accordingly, and will post Draft 2 next week.

(It's been an interesting exercise to try to get MapPoint to route down a street that doesn't exist in their system in lieu of 13th. I'm hoping the results will be understandable.)

I just updated Map Source and the new Myra Road extension from Rose north to 12 has not been added yet. Wondering if they are waiting for the new highway route and interchange to be completed before they update the maps?

The Capri is a good no frills motel. It's off the beaten path which is why the room rates are low but it's in a safe neighborhood. Best access from US12 is off of Wilbur then right on Melrose. Wellington Ave. does not intersect with 12 but runs under it.

  9. Tracks are presently being used for storage. Should not be a problem.

Dang. If I knew there were free boxcars available, I wouldn't have reserved a room at the Super 8.

No boxcars, all center beam lumber cars like these:

  10. I'm planning a trip to that area in October. Any cache recommendations for that area especially hiking/nature trails? I will probably have kids with me that like to trade so any non-micro cache recommendations would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

  11. Anybody ever figure out a fix for the:

    "System.formatException

Invalid Length for a Base-64 char array

    Method: FromBase64String"

I get this when I tried it with my Verizon Razr v3m (apparently there is difference between the v3m and v3c). Can't seem to get beyond this problem.

I'm getting the same error message on my v3m also.

  12. Easiest way: Pull up the cache page, then hit the Microsoft Mappoint Link - the county name is on the map that pops up.

I liked it when that map was displayed on the cache page. MUCH better than the Yahoo! maps currently used. More details at a glance like county location, is it in a National Forest, etc.

  13. Congratulations to my friend, Bluesman63 on his 1000th find. He reached that milestone today! Now on to the next 1000..... :P

Way to go Ray, it's about time! :D

I've been working in Walla Walla recently and I've enjoyed doing quite a few of Bluesman63's caches.

    Congratulations on 1000 finds!

Thanks everybody! On to the next 1,000 and many more adventures.

    Ray, Bluesman63
