  1. I nominate vodka. Personally I think beer would be more appropriate, but I don't think beer is a spirit. Edit : I can just see the ad. "Absolut Geocaching" That's hilarious
  2. As others have said, only place them if you can maintain them, and one memorable cache is worth 10 light pole skirts. That being said though, I was introduced a few months back to caching karma. It's based on the number of FINDS your caches have, compared to YOUR finds. Right now mine is in the dirt, my caches have 100 finds compared to my 500 finds. I would like to have my caches have more finds than I have.
  3. "Finding" it in that way is no different than if you were with someone or a whole group of people that were caching, and they found it right before you did. You would still log it as found. Just remember, it's a game, have fun, and do what is right for you, without compromising the cache.
  4. With both of you caching together, using your wife's name for both of you is fine, and done quite often. You will see "found by Team so and so" a lot. But if you plan on caching separately, (which it sounds like you are going to do) then make a new user name, log your previous finds as found, and in your online log you might mention that you signed the logbook under your wife's username, and don't bother with going back and signing the paper logs again.
  5. How long do you work on a puzzle before giving up. I've been working on this one for a few hours a week for six months. GC1JVBP Post your favorites or the ones you're working on, but NO SPOILERS. I'll post one of my own also that people seem to be having some trouble with. GC1T7ZF
  6. Every once in a while I will use some silly acronyms on caches, especially the ones where I thought the hider didn't even slow their car down while throwing out their 35mm film canister by the landfill: GABARC IHTKIWMP IWWCTL Which means, I got attacked by a rabid coyote. I had to kill it with my pocketknife. I wonder what coyote tastes like I never explain in my logs what it means, and as of yet no one has asked. On caches that I don't even feel like typing a log, because the hider didn't put any effort into it either, I'll only put TFTC TNLNSL which to me means Thanks for placing this cache here in this creepy cemetery, I didn't take anything out of the cache because McDonalds toys don't interest me anymore because I'm a grown man. And since I didn't take anything, I'm not going to leave this cool LED flashlight that I've been carrying around for a month. I did however sign the log, whith my own pen because the one in the cache is broke and dried up. Also the log was full and pretty damp.
  7. I noticed that myself. I hope it's just temporary, I use Google Earth a lot to plot out where to go caching next.
  8. I always bring a pencil, batteries, a camera, and a compass.
  9. A good place to start your search for a GPS unit is right here on the forums at the GPS Yardsale http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=13
  10. A lot of the time you will see TFTH or TFTC which means Thanks For The Hide or Thanks For The Cache. Another one you will see is TNLN Took Nothing Left Nothing SL is Signed Log So you will see this a lot: TFTC TNLN SL which is short hand for: "Thanks for placing this cache here in this creepy cemetery, I didn't take anything out of the cache because McDonalds toys don't interest me anymore because I'm a grown man. And since I didn't take anything, I'm not going to leave this cool LED flashlight that I've been carrying around for a month. I did however sign the log, whith my own pen because the one in the cache is broke and dried up. Also the log was also full and pretty damp." I wrote a little bit more about this on my (shameless plug) blog here.
  11. Delete double post, Groundspeaks forums are a little wonky lately too say the least.
  12. If you can find somebody that has a few years of experience to cache with helps tons. Someone you can tag along with and show you the ropes. Kind of like the techno-geek friend that people call to come fix their computer. Check and see if there are local caching groups in your area also. There are always people willing to take someone along on their adventures. But to restate what has been said before, your GPS unit will only get you close, it will not be 100% accurate. Most units will tell you how accurate they are at a given time based on their sat. signal. So keep in mind that if when I hid a cache and my unit was off by 35' to the NW of the actual coordinates, and when you come find my cache and your unit is off by 35' to the SE, you end up with a larger area to look. One thing I always always always bring, is a compass. A $2 engineering compass. I have had 5 different GPS receivers since I started and they all do this: They will occasionally swing North around the other direction, especially the slower you go, or if you are standing still. The bearing from North to the cache won't change, but all of a sudden your arrow guiding you will start flipping around. So if you take out your compass and align North on the compass with North on the GPSr the arrow will point you in the right direction.
  13. I thought it was quite interesting. As with any TV show, if it doesn't interest you then don't watch it. I would love to see something like this on a regular basis. Yes the original episode isn't perfect, but have you ever seen the pilot to Seinfeld? And that ended up being one of the most loved shows of all time. (Time for 100 flames about how "not me, I hate Seinfeld") It doesn't even have to be on your TV (even though that is where the money is at) it could be a weekly internet show like the stuff they do at digg nation etc... I for one watch tons of internet based programing and would be happy to see this every week.
  14. Thanks for the help Maine Family and Droo. I'll dip it in some caches right away and test it out.
  15. I have recently been gifted a 2008 Groundspeak Volunteer Geocoin by a local reviewer, and I want some advice on etiquette involving coins. I don't want to release it out in the wild, to me it's too valuable, but I do want to continue using it. I was reading here on the forums about "dipping" and to me that seems appropriate. What I want to do, is to only place the coin in caches that I think are unique in some way. Either it be from the journey, or the puzzle, or the camo, etc... Caches that I think are special. What I don't know is the mechanics of doing this. Do you post a note that you are placing it, and then post another note that your grabbing it? Is it ok to drop it in archived caches or caches that I found years ago? I've never owned a geocoin so I don't know the accepted policies. Also I see people saying they discovered a coin at an event etc... Do you show them the coin, and they write down the tracking number, and then log it as found? What happens then? Is there anything I have to do to show that it is still in my hands? Thanks for any advice. Here are some picture if you're interested. And I wrote a little bit more about how I got the coin here.
  16. I haven't had a chance yet to look at it completely, but it is definitely the longest cache description I have ever seen Looks challenging and fun.
  17. Of course, it remains to be seen if there's a cache at those coordinates, or another puzzle (I solved it too, but am kind of across the globe...) Cool, When I made the puzzle, a coworker, who I never thought was the sharpest tool in the shed, looked at it and knew immediately what it was. But as with most puzzles, you either get the idea or not. Since posting it here at least 4 people have solved it, which makes me feel better, I thought maybe something was wrong with the puzzle. My guess is the people in my area just aren't into puzzles. Which explains why my caches don't have many finds, and I have to drive 100 miles to find the nearest puzzle cache. 90% of the caches in my area are skirt lifters I bet. Not that those don't have a place, but I like a challenge. Maybe we should have an "official" sticky thread, where we post our puzzles for other puzzle cachers to try before putting them in the wild. I have done something similar, any time you're the FTF on a cache hidden by me or a few friends, you get the url to a website that we post puzzles that are as yet found on geocaching.com
  18. Frogbot is a blast! One of my personal favorites has been Technomancy, partly because I've been the only one to find it I have a few that have not been found yet, the oldest is Ready Set Go...
  19. I need a Magellan GPS Companion for a Handspring Visor PDA. Not to long ago you could find them on eBay for $10 - $20 but not now. Any leads on where to get one, or if someone has one for sale, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  20. On the last 2 trips Ive been on I've never gotten a lock, regardless of where I was sitting with my eTrex Legend. And that was on a total of 8 different planes. As far as airline regulations or what not, Ive never asked for permission, but on one AirTran flight I know a stewardess saw my GPSr but she never said anything to me about it.
  21. Four Windows GCF55A, and What in the Wold Cache GC6D43 are two of my favorites. The Homeless Bathtub is a cache that should not be attempted alone.
  22. I still haven't seen mine yet. Any updates?
  23. VASQUE VASQUE VASQUE VASQUE I wear mine all year long at work and play and they hold up great. I used to go through 3 pairs of cheap boots a year @ $50 a time. I bought one pair of Vasque for $160 and wore them everyday for 2 years before the soles wore down and the waterproofing gave out. I bought a new pair for everyday use at work etc.. and still wear the old pair where waterproofing and slick soles aren't an issue.
  24. I placed this one a few weeks ago and the few people who have found it seem to like it. Hopefully none of the locals will read this page and realize where it's at: Un-Fair Facts
