  1. I did my weekly cache update, about 8000 caches, after unplugging the device, it usually takes about 5 minutes to reload all the caches, doing it's little start up animation. Well, my batteries died about 4 minutes into this process. Now every time I try to start it up, it's just perpetually loading, it never finishes, I've tried doing the paperclip into the hole and it restarts and does it all again :/ Anyone know what to do? I can't even get it to communicate with my PC since that comes after the initial load screen.
  2. My comment was pertaining to virtuals at the grand canyon and such. I appreciate being brougt to local hilltops with city views as well, but it would be nice if there was a cache up there
  3. Did you find the cache? I found half of it!, so instead of a smiley, I'll just claim a smug grin.
  4. Yawn, too much sidestepping the point. Trying to turn everything into how I'm disgusting and what not. I've already made 2 posts trying to defend myself, and you seem pretty determined to dissect and misinterpret everything else I say to make me look like something I'm not. *tips hate* 5 o'clock, time to punch the ole time card and find some caches. No hard feelings ;D
  5. I never said they were removing virtuals SO they could go back to how it was, I'm stating it's an effect of them doing so. Also, I didn't mean it in a literal circle jerk, think of it as 10 people getting together to stroke each others ego's and getting their numbers up. Having an opinion doesn't claim superiority, but trying to insinuate my comment doesn't hold any merit based on my time here is pretty pathetic.
  6. They can move to those other sites as well as far as I'm concerned. Especially how events count for cache finds. In my city there is about 4 events a month that the same 10 people attend every month, what a circle jerk. I can appreciate the fellowship between cachers, but the same people meeting up like 4+ times a month just for smiles and beers is padding. Give me 5 years and I'll be a condescending prick as well.. well, no I wont.
  7. "Joined: 6-June 10" How cute, it's patronizing me. Must suck when someone with such little seniority still makes a valid point. Get off your high horse.
  8. If you want to find cool places, get a travel book, or use those spinoff websites. But Geocaching seems to be going back to its original intention. "Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online."
  9. Muggle is fine. Even if you stuck with the Harry Potter version of the word, it's kinda fun thinking of non-geocachers as "non-magic folk" because we possess a magic they do not
  10. Hmm there was an easy magnet transformer cache.. I showed up and found the magnet on the underside of the transformer with piece of glue still on it. I claimed it as a find, and then filed a maintenance request post as well. Does this make me bad? it's the first time I've ever done that.
  11. Hybrid. I very quickly rocket into hobbies, like the beginning half of the abandoned noob cacher, extremely ambitious, except I don't quit and don't lose interest. I go balls out into anything I start, I quickly attempt to learn all the ropes, adapt, and excel. After doing so, I eventually find myself trying to connect with the local core member, in an attempt to fit in even further. I absolutely love the outdoors, hiking, rock climbing and biking, at the same time I love trying to be incognito for city caches.
  12. And if there was just a way to filter out bushwhacking caches also!!!!!
  13. Lol they should just make a PQ option for a once a week 10,000 PQ. Since most new units support that many. And find a way to break it up for viewing purposes as to not bog your system down when rendering. Or have a 3rd party program request caches in a certain area, then once you get what you want, just send another request to process into PQ.
  14. It's not a matter of doing them all, it's a matter of having them available to me. Right now, I've been running 2000 caches once a week. One of them is a 14.4 mile radius around my work, the other is a 10.4 mile radius around my home. My whole goal was to load up all 10,000 spots with as much of my travelable Southern California area, without getting some of the stupid spots I know I wont go to.. ever. And with a circle selector it's hard to select one desirable city without dipping drastically into areas I will never use. I ended up doing the suggestion about sorting by date.. that only allowed me a 33 mile radius from my home location before using up all 10,000 spots haha. I'll load up all the ones prior to 2010, then keep the 2010+ one refreshed every week. Occasionally refreshing the older ones in case some become reactivated. (yes I left about 1200 spots open for random waypoints, and new caches)
  15. The overlapping comes into play with the radius overlapping, say I run a circular PQ next to a circular PQ, they will overlap caches (that I havn't found) and although they wont overlap on my GPS, it's still taking up spots on my PQ limit. (and in my area, there is 1000 caches within a 10 mile radius anywhere within 50 miles I point)
  16. Not a bad idea sir, I'll give that a shot.
  17. Can anyone recommend a good method for efficiently retrieving PQ's for very cache saturated regions? Like Southern California, I can't get more then a 10 mile radius from ANY location without going over the 1000 cache limit for PQ's. I'm looking for the best method to maximized the available caches on my unit (it holds 10,000) without overlapping (much), or missing caches. yeah, I feel like I have obsessive compulsive disorder while Geocaching.
  18. Could there be an implementation of a feature, that instead of a radius from a certain location, I could have a re-sizable square, adjustable, like a window, to select an area for a PQ? I live in a very cache satured area, and it's extremely difficult to create pocket queries that don't overlap caches, or leave out certain areas. Doing this would allow you to slightly modify your area of intent. Say you're at JUST over 1000 caches, you could move the right side slightly in. THEN create another PQ next to that area. The goal here is to maximize the the area covered without overlapping/skipping caches.

  20. Hmm imo half the fun in this game is being sneaky, obtaining and signing the log without drawing attention. simply walking up, looking at it, and going home to e-log it is kinda like saying you hit a home run if you never swung the bat.
  21. Haha the first puzzle I did, I google maps'd the coords and drove there >< and then there was the possibility of just editing my own GPX file, but that would have sucked. Thanks for actually making me use my brain Well then, I guess to salvage what's left of my pride, could anyone recommend a similar unit with maybe topographic maps, or maybe better responce time on my location? MAYBE with an internal magnetic compass? Just wanting to invest big now while I can still return this thing IF I decide to.
  22. Pardon my complete ignorance, I apologize, found it under waypoints. I underestimated this device, thinking it's capabilities were too narrow.
  23. Alright, I just started geocaching 3 days ago AND LOVING IT, I've gotten my parents, and aunt to buy an Explorist GC as well and start geocaching. My Magellan is working wonderfully but I'm tempted to return the unit and get something that will allow me to manually input coordinates while a computer is not available to create/copy GPX/LOG files onto it. Sooo yeah, basically, I'm saying I wouldn't mind spending 50 or so extra bucks for a unit that would give me a bit more flexibility, with "Unknown" caches, or adding in my own desired coordinates for non geocaching purposes. Does anyone know a unit that would give me everything I love about my Explorist with these other desired capabilities in the 250ish max range? Cache ya later.
