  1. If I go geocaching at night, there's almost a 100% chance I'll see a black widow. Hell, even last night we were doing a bunch of lamp post hides in a shopping center, my daughter grabbed the cache out of a lamp post skirt, then when I went to put it back this BIG fat black widow came waltzing out. I flicked it with my pen and replaced the cache
  2. Yeah, as cool as it would be to get a TB to it's goal, a big part of TB's in Geocaching is going from cache to cache, or traveling with a cacher. If they wanted it to get there quick without any stops in between, they would have mailed it themselves It's kinda like a message in a bottle thrown in the the ocean, let it go where the geocaching currents take it.
  3. Regarding your question, accordingly to my experience, there isn't a generic rule. I often find a reference to that in the listing, especially when a direct approach is mandatory (for example, when access to certain grounds is usually blocked, but an exception is expected for geocachers). In other cases the logs make reference to the interaction with local guards / owners / employees / etc and from there you can take the necessary info. And another thing, permission isn't always given It's assumed that it's given, but in all honesty a lot of times it's not, so you may find yourself dodging security Or getting caught (it will happen eventually)
  4. Here's how I deal with them:
  5. Also, actually SEEING all the different types of caches will eventually open your mind, I've only found like 376 so far, and unless I've *seen* a certain cache before it's really hard to expect it. But once you've seen it, you add it to your "what to expect" part of your brain haha. When I first started, I spent about 30 minutes on this one hide, going down into a drainage ditch, lifting up all sorts of rocks, climbing trees, turned out it was in the top of a fence pole.. Now that'll be the first place I look most times walking up to a situation like that.
  6. But usually it's still a good idea to wear long pants. Did this on Wednesday last week, and not learning my lesson.... did it Friday as well Yep, did this Friday on a cache. THought there was no way the path I was on could possibly loop back towards the cache that is right there..... Just did that in 108 degree heat, a 10 mile bike ride redeeming DNF's along a bike trail, I wore blue jeans and a long sleeve shirt. I was at early to moderate stages of heat stroke by the time I finally got back, but I redeemed 5 DNF's and was invincible when plowing threw all the weeds/brush/bushes. So it was worth it. I'd rather be hot as hell than scratched up and vulnerable.
  7. Ooo perfect spot to plug my shirt design, has a cool slogan on it ;D http://www.zazzle.com/geocachers_get_lots_...561887818802531
  8. Got a guy around here who did a hide in a hospital parking garage, 3 story coords pointed at the entrance, which was 50 feet away from the stair well it was actually in, Within the stairwell at the base there was a bunch of fire sprinkler system piping, and it ran all the way to the top of the stair wells 3rd floor. The hint was 45's... nothing in the description about the floor, or even that it was IN the parking garage itself. Turns out the cache was inside a pipe that was mounted onto the wall used to brace the vertical running fire sprinkler pipes, and it was at a 45 degree angle, hence the hint 45's (yeah it sounds easy once it's pointed out). I was proud as hell once I finally got it (after 4 DNF's), but I felt so wrong being there, especially since every floor of the stair well had a security camera pointed right at you. Loaded .45's
  9. Mother of god... I have to do that........
  10. Enter Into Terror I first went for it my 2nd day geocaching, there were 2 sets of sprinler pipes, one inside a small cage, and another exposed, the hint was "Pipe" So after reaching GZ, I start veering into trees and crap looking for a PVC pipe on the ground or something, logged it as a DNF claiming that "there was a new cage around the pipes that the cache must have been on" Came back with a couple hundred extra finds, and found it within 3 seconds, literally. I was SO embarrassed.
  11. I dislike when people think they're making "clever" hints, but it's way over everyones head. I've seen it on more than one occasion, I read a hint and think "wtf...." go back to the cache page afterwards and see a few people like "Found the cache.. no clue what the hint meant but got it anyways"
  12. Or if you're feeling super nice, find a previous finder, and go replace the cache
  13. *cringe* I wear pants and long sleeve shirts in the middle of summer to avoid bushes, I couldn't imagine what would get stuck in where if I went naked :/ As for OP, I usually set out on 15-20 cache bike rides on Sundays, so I usually get mile stones along the way, unfortunately nothing special.
  14. How did you determine that this person was a premium member? Ahh I must have been mistaken, I looked up all the caches that were noted as being vandalized and noticed a few of them were premium members only, leaving the possibility that he is just BSing people. (or the CO's made them premium only after seeing them vandalized).
  15. So then Groundspeak knows EXACTLY who he (or she) is. Interesting. File charges imo
  16. Wow the sad thing is, he bought a premium membership just to do it :/ prettttyyyy pathetic.
  17. ...When I made a deal to myself to always find at LEAST 1 cache on my way to and/or from work. I'm having to leave earlier and earlier to work these days.
  18. Only quote from from Bible related materials I know by heart, and one of many qualities that I WISH I could attain.
  19. No. Nothing wrong with testing the waters. I should have left the question mark for AFTER all the stuff they leave behind, I have nothing against people testing the waters, the statement only applied to the ones leaving the "slew of.... " And being from a highly cache saturated area, I can say I experience terrible quality cachers more than I few times here and there. Granted time spent caching is not an indication of a persons ability to hide, it still opens their mind to certain types of hides. It's like having your drivers permit (god knows people can drive a long time and still SUCK at it) But at least getting them behind the wheel for a bit before giving them a license shows them the basics.
  20. Hi look at me, I've only been geocaching since June 7th. Ha Ha I'm a newb because of my date. Ok, now that that's out of the way. Is anyone else getting tired of geocachers who get into the hobby for 1-30 finds then just disappear? Leaving nothing but a trail of DNF'd LPH logs, stolen or unlogged geocoins/travelbugs, misplaced or mistreated caches, and a slew of horribly placed unmaintained caches that never get fixed? I think with the ease of attaining apps for smartphone and Iphones, and a geocaching.com account "Low quality cachers" are infecting this game. When signing up for a geocaching.com account, new players should have to go through a flash demo/orientation. Then answer the BASIC questions about geocaching (etiquette, TB/coin logging, etc) . And maybe impose a 50 find minimum before being able to hide your own cache. (yeah I'm sure that one has come up before) Anyways thanks for being my shoulder to QQ on. -Drag
  21. Watch out for this guy. I was asking a question, not stating I was going to do it. And thanks to the others for the answers I was looking for.
  22. Title sums it up. Is there a proper section on the forum to promote products created for geocachers? I.e shirts and what not.
  23. Yeah I got it to boot up in "Mass storage mode" deleted my GPX files, and even reinstalled the 1.4 firmware, and nothing. I've only had it for like 25 days, so I'm just going to go back to Target and exchange it for a new one. I looked it up only, and only found 1 other site containing info on this, and Magellan had to have the guy send it in to get replaced. I ended up just going back to Target and exchanging it for the same unit, hurray for a "brand new" gps haha.

  25. I have found it's pretty dang amazing, I live in a really cache saturated area, so I have pocket queries setup for everything in a 33 mile radius (which is 8500 caches), giving me some room when I travel to do on the spot caching. It looks like the PN-40 can only load like 1000 or 2000 caches, the Dakota serious is only 1000-2000, and my GC is 10,000.. Which gives nuts like me a LOT of flexibility.
