  1. You need a waypoint manager program on your PC to manage your waypoints and Etc. 1) GSAK $20 (You can download from Groundspeak form) The Best 2) EasyGPS free (You can download from Groundspeak form) 3) Garmin map program if you buy the software.
  2. Down loading waypoints requires a software program. 1) Option One for a new Geocacher. Download GPS from Grownspeak (GS) Page. Download a LOC file from GS to EasyGPS Then download to GPSr. 2) Option Two if you like Geocaching Become a Premium member ($30) and order Pocket Queries (PQ) Download and then purchase (GSAK $20) from Grownspeak page Use GSAK to manage your caches on home computer Download Filtered Caches to GPSr. 3) After doing Option Two you will want to go paperless and purchase a PDA (Palm or Pocket PC) If you purchase a Palm then get CacheMate $8 for managing your files on the palm.
  3. When you use the term dump are you meaning that you download all of your database (All caches) to your PDA and GPSr? I think most people filter their database and only download a limited number of caches to their PDA or GPSr.
  4. Here's my setup: -Garmin eTrex Legend -GSAK -MS MapPoint -MS Street and Trips (with PocketStreets) -Cachemate ********************************************************** I use a Garmin eTrex Legend GSAK MS Streets & Trips CacheMate MetroGuides You need to get MetroGuide for your Legend. From your profile you live in California and the legend's 8 megs of memory will not let you load very much area of CA at one time. I can load over 1/2 the State of Oklahoma in my legend (8 Meg) To my knowledge Palms can not load any commercial map programs.
  5. CaxheMate is a program that sorts multi views and etc. HTML is internet code for a page.
  6. Go with the Zire 21 Monocrome & 8 Meg of memory it will work great. I have a Zire 31 (Color - 16 Meg) and I purchased a used Zire M150 (Monochrome & 2 meg) to cache because the monochrome is easyer to read in bright sunlight.
  7. 1) Get a Handelbar mount for your bike. 2) When you start ride set GPS to track option 3) When finished save with a unique name. 4) Open Mapsource (Garmin) on your computer 5) Click on transfer 6) Select proper setting 7) Click on receive You are finished
  8. Get Geocaching Swiss Army Knife GSAK $20 for managing caching on your Laptop and home computer. Get a used (PALM -PDA) Zire (M150) (2Meg Monocrome USB) off of E-Bay for 20-25 and then get CacheMate $8 for your PDA Link on Groundspeak home page for them.
  9. You just need to play with it. Open GSAK (The more cache you have the better it works) Click on search Change Difficulty from 5 to 2 (Example) Change Terrrain from 5 to 2 (Example) Change Distance to Less than or equal to 5 Miles (Example) Click on GO You now have a list of filtered caches. Repeat above steps with different numbers Click at top of any collum and it will sort by accending or decending. Just keep playing arounds and you will love it.
  10. GPS do not directly interface with a PC you must use a Waypoint manager like EasyGPS (Free) or GSAk ($20 The Best)
  11. You need to download EasyGPS (Free) or GSAK ($20 The Best) and use it as a waypoint manager.
  12. Open GSAK On Main Menu Click on GPS Select Garmin Select USB or Serial Select Communication Port (Normally Com 1) Click OK It should work
  13. Zire M150 (2Meg - MonoCrome) ($20-25) on E-Bay and CacheMate ($8) will hold over 500 caches and is easer to read in bright sunlight than my Zire 31 Color with 16 Meg
  14. Dykeniva 1) Have you downloaded a waypoint manager program like EasyGPS (Free) or GSAK ($20) or some other program? (You must use a program that is set to Garmins protocols to send data back and forth between Computer Program and GPS (Garmin) 2) If so add the program that you are using to your post! 3) Then some one will walk you threw the steps.
  15. To my knowledge the Base Map can not be uploaded to a PC.
  16. Delete all waypoints and then redownload from GSAK the ones that you want.
  17. Hello Bob Smith Open GSAK and then right click on the Cache that you want to Edit. You can now edit Waypoit name (Six lettters & Digets) the cache name or the Smart name or what ever you want to edit. Now send to GPS or PDA
  18. Hobbies People do hobbies that they enjoy and have fun doing. If you can combine two hobbies at one time you have more than twice the fun. Rural Caches with long walks conbine two hobbies, Geo-Cacheing and hiking in rural area. IF YOU ARE A HIKER THEN THESE ARE GREAT CACHES If you do not love hikiing or walking in the woods then they are lame caches. URBAN CACHES ARE FOR EVERONE!!! The hikers just have to follow a couple of rule to make them fun. 1) You can not were hiking boots! (Flip Flops Only) 2) You must park X miles from the cache (X is the distance that you like to hike)
  19. Two Options 1) One get PC Serial Cable to Garmin (Reconmended) 2) Make a waypoint, then edit the waypoint to your cordinates to the ones you want
  20. You have to be a Premium Member to download GPX files which give you more detail that the LOC files. If I remember right when you download LOC files to EasyGPS you get the Cache six letter description and not the Cache Name Become a Premium memder and order Pocket Queries. Get GSAK $20 and a used Palm & CacheMate
  21. When you do a Zip code search the distance if from the aprox center of the zip code or the postoffice if it is close to the center of the zip code area. (It is not consistance)
  22. Start out by only doing 1/1 cache in your area. After finding all of them move up to 1.5/1.5 then 2/2 and so on. After finding a few caches you will get the hang of how caches are hid.
  23. Your home computer (Master) has a program that sends information to the GPS or Palm. (Slave) Some palms have programs that can send data to a GPS. But I think that you would need the MapSource program on the Palm for it to work.
  24. I have a Legend and a Zire 31 With the legend 8 meg of memory I can get more that half of the state of Oklahoma using MetroGuides. I got a used Zire M150 (2meg Monochrome USB) from E-Bay for 20-25 it works better than the color in bright sunlight. (It hold over 500 caches) Also get CacheMate ($8) for the Palm. Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK $20) is the best program for managing Pocket Queries (GPS Files) on you home computer
  25. I recently purchased a Garmin Etrex Legend and I cannot seem to get it to communicate with my PC through the USB when working with EasyGPS The legend comes with a serial cable to hook to the PC! Does you Computer not have a serial port?
