  1. That's why they are called puzzle caches. Here's your coordinates in Google Earth. You MAY find something there that will make sense, but likely not as it looks as if it's just a point on a bike path. You gotta figure out if the posted coordinates are germane.
  2. I don't use any caching software on the PC. I write my own scripts/bat and use GPSBabel which states: Since you will have the laptop and the cache info with you..... As for the GPS Device, my grandson has been using a $50 Garmin Geko for four years and often beats me to the find. But, you must enter the coordinates by hand and that is error prone so a device that can "download" waypoint coordinates is more reliable. GPS Babel can write to the USB port or the Serial Port as well as create a file on a memory card in the needed format for most downloadable devices. Find it: http://www.gpsbabel.org/
  3. Well, then, I think it's time for you to write contact@Groundspeak.com.
  4. Congratulations! You've managed to confuse me (and I hope not ONLY me) with that question. I'm assuming you mean "precise coordinates" by the phrase "checked for proximity." Final location - yes, it's supposed to be exact coordinates in most cases Parking area - should be pretty close to precise coordinates, but at lease close enough to use GPS Turn by Turn to get there. Question To Answer - well, usually you will not find a container, but the coordinates should be accurate or at least the question is obvious (as in landmark) with at least "nearby" coordinates. Reference point - usually a physical object with a distance and a heading/bearing in degrees on a compass. It could be "proximity checked," but could just be a described obvious landmark with at least "nearby" coordinates. Stages of a multi-cache - Not necessarily a container, most always "proximity checked" and could ential both Question to Answer, Reference point, or a container with more information inside. Trailhead - see Parking Area. Dunno if I got that right for you, but hope so.
  5. Yes, speed helps immensly. With the difference in price of only four bucks in this case ( http://www.flash-memory-store.com/secure-digital.html ) 4 gig is a no-brainer. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.
  6. Are you sure you are not adding the "S-" to it? Use just the number, the "S-" is provided by the website. In the case I showed, you would coopy and paste 803987334712K NOT S-803987334712K Just poking in the dark....
  7. Bede, you should have received an e-mail which would look EXACTLY like this: Copy and paste works best on that number which in this post has been modified, of course.
  8. Brian Excellent article. I would add one thing, however. When you exit your vehicle to start your journey into the deep dark woods (even if only 600 feet), MARK your starting point. When bushwhacking, it is very easy to get turned around and lose track of which way you came in. This is true even if your GPS has a backtrack feature. Marking my Parking is my motto. Even if navigating urban canyons. As my avatar suggests, I find many caches after dark and some as "late" as 3AM or 4AM. One dark night I neglected to Mark my Park and if it were not for my quarter mile range remote start system in my truck, I would probably have spent the night in that thick brush. My truck started, the lights came on and I was 180° disoriented as my truck was behind me! Hasn't happened since.
  9. +1 And, I have a concealed carry permit. If you don't, pepper spray is good. However, those with a carry permit or even a stick or spray, use caution. You must be able to prove by a preponderance of evidence that you were in danger of getting SERIOUS bodily harm (not just bruises and scrapes) from or getting killed by the person THAT YOU ASSAULT with a stick or gun. In these cases, the burden of proof is ON YOU and not on the plaintiff if it's a civil suit or even the prosecutor if it is a felony incident. You must also prove that you had no escape route, even if you are in your own home, let alone in the woods or a park.
  10. The request for a username change needs to be made from the email address in your account profile and sent to contact@Groundspeak.com. Provide the current username as well as the requested new username. Please make sure you specify the exact spelling, spacing and capitalization for your new username.
  11. Man, is there a trick to that? Here's what I get when I try to ADD/PATH. No path

    TNLN?

When I find a uncreative micro on a stinky dumpster, I will post. "It's logged" or "It's there" or something even more low key like "Bump" meaning It's only worthy of a numbers bump. We had a cache that required you to tell a story called Stolen Ideas. Here's my log: Here is a list of caches placed around the city for an event. Each a part of speech or some related idiom. Party was planned by an English teacher. Very easy hides, but the ALR was, for me, not that difficult and really fun! You had to find all the first ones to get the coordinates to the final. Poetic Practice – All About Alliteration [Visit Log] Poetic Practice – Simile [Visit Log] Poetic Practice – Simple Rhymes [Visit Log] Poetic Practice – Onomatopoeia [Visit Log] Poetic Practice – Haiku [Visit Log] Poetic Practice – Limerick [Visit Log] Poetic Practice - Putting it Together to which I logged concisely - The mystery is history!
  13. But what if the "write on" part of the magnetic sheet is facing inward, hence is covered by itself? Would that not "contain" the log? Is there a guideline that says the log must be separate of the container or must we interpret: as strictly at least two pieces of equipment? As an example: presume that we have received in the mail an advertisement that is a single sheet folded. Is that not a piece of paper AND an advertisement?
  14. Lower right of the list page is this button. It will, at least, check all the caches on the list page. You can learn about Member Features (Pocket Queries, Notify, etc) by clicking the Member Features link at the top of your account page (or click here) You can try Premium Membership for one month for only $3.00. If you like it, sign up for a year for $30.00. On the right of your account page is "You are a basic member. Upgrade your membership. Click that link
  15. You DON'T want to know how I keep critters away from my vunlerble caches. Around the perimeter, not ON the container. It's good to be male. Anyway, this is also how I keep rats, mice, raccoons and other such critters away from my house. It will also cure athletes foot (Google it). Got the idea from another board. Guys would spray their motocycles with fox urine to keep the mice from building nests in their air cleaners. Fox urine is expensive at $5 an ounce. I just convert a few beers into free critter repellant and it's all natural. Go ahead.... get the popcorn. Or not. It's a good idea and urine, BTW, is sterile but is acidic & contains the toxins your body wanted rid of.
  16. Double good advice. Here's another trick. When I create a picture for the forum such as the one above showing the "UPLOAD LINK" graphic, I will create that picture and save it with a sensible name on my computer. I will then visit one of my archived caches to which I have written a note. I will upload that picture to the log's gallery then when it shows, I click on it to get it in a full window with the full GC link in the address bar. I click the address bar to hilite the URL and then press CTRL/C to copy the link to the clipboard. I will then return to my post and will click the "tree button" to add an image, press CTRL/V to paste the link and click OK. With this method, I can keep track of the images because I often use the same one again and again when trying to help out with questions. Here is one of the logs I use CLICK-->FLying I< Here is an image from another post about changing your home coordinates... the link is http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/da0c6b...de1733b44fe.jpg but you sure don't wanna try to type that. Here's the pic: This seems to work well and does not burden the server.
  17. This icon in the upper right corner of the list. Premium Membership is not necessary. I've been caching since early '05 and premium as well and I was about to ask what the heck you meant by "Map It." I had no idea. Then, ao318 gave the answer just before I posted. Just some friendly advice. Verbosity in a forum message which is intended to answer a question is NOT a vice.
  18. I've had good luck with the "lock n lock" containers from Target. Cammo tape from WalMart and cammo paint from WalMart or Loews/Home Depot. If you do use PVC, get the black rubber caps called "FERNCO" caps. Not only are they cheaper, if you use the regular PVC caps and a cacher gets careless with putting the end back on, it will BE ON - STUCK. I've found several PVC caches that were nearly impossible to get the PVC cap off of them. Had to bang one against a rock several times.
  19. Caches near schools are frowned upon in any case and are not often permitted regardless of permission unless they are a class project.
  20. Be informed that not only the LISTED coordinates for caches must be 1/10 from any other cache, but each stage of a multi will have a waypoint associated with it and you cannot be within 1/10 of any of those stages caches either. Best way to check is to mark your proposed cache location and then do a "Hide & Seek" with your coordinates plugged in. You will get a listing of the closest caches and if they are 1/10 away you're probably set UNLESS.... There is a stage of a multi-cache nearby with 500 feet. Problem is, those stage waypoints are not public - only the owner and the reviewer know where they are and.. It's happened to me twice. I prepared a neat little cache and thought the area clean. Nope, a week's work down the "too close" drain. Then I fixed up a cute multi and one of my mutli-stages was too close to another stage of another cache. Boo Hoo!
  21. After you log a cache and are shown the resulting log screen, in the upper right hand corner is an Upload Image link. Click there and click BROWSE then pick the pic from your computer. GC.COM will size it and store it. It's how I have all my pics that I put here to help folks out. They are on my log for one of my archived caches..... Flying I
  22. You have just described how it's usually done on encrypted ones. If it was not encrypted, I would delete it right away and write the logger and invite hme to log his find.
  23. Magnetic north is where the northern magnetic field lines plunge in to the surface of the earth up north. Currently it resides at latitude N 82.7° Longitude W 114.8°. It is where mechanical compasses point their needles due to magnetism. It's just west of Greenland and above Canada in the arctic ocean. As you can see, that's not where Santa Lives. Using mag north (which was what we had to do in the "old" days before GPS sats) to get TRUE NORTH (where Santa DOES live at ZERO° Latitude) you had to orient yourself with some math to measure the offset from mag north to get true north. Magnetic north is moving approximately 40KM northwest per year. TRUE north is 0° N latitude and whatever longitude. I usually cache with my unit set to TRUE NORTH because that's normally what is required on pages with offsets in heading from a point. It is usually, but not always, specified on the cache page. A sample of using your compass and GPS in concert to solve a cache can be seen in my "Historic Wick Park" -> CLICK HERE <-. I do use magnectic north on that cache because the park itself is oriented so neatly along those lines. Hope this helps.
