  1. windcalmer@gmail.com if you want to send me that file. It would help me out a lot. How all this happened was I did not know that loading a new map would erase the old map on my GPS. I had it all perfect and went to load a TOPO map to use every so often. Yup, deleted my old map that I did not have a backup of.
  2. How large of a area is the file you have? Only reason I ask is because I have limited space on my GPS. She only has around 24mb or something like that. I only travel from carrollton to alpheretta. So I dont need that much of the whole map.
  3. I should also add that I am using an Etrex Venture HC, so I do not need these maps to auto route. Is there a way to make it work by dropping the auto route info?
  4. O.K. I just redownloaded the file. And ran it through mapssettoolkit. Here is what I got. Each is in order of how they popped up. Here is the first error. Then once I clicked "dont send" the error report, this one popped up. Then I click "OK" to the convert failed and this popped up.
  5. I have used these maps to build all my maps. It is only this one file that will not convert. Here is a link to the file I am having problems with: My link As for the error message I will post it in a few minutes. My last two sentences were trying to say I downloaded the same file 15 or 16 times and every time it would fail to convert. I know that is highly unlikely for it to get messed up that many times in a row. There has to be something wrong with the source file.
  6. O.K. I have been putting together my map for northwest GA and I get an error when I try to convert the sandy springs area to get it in to mapsource. I am using mapset toolkit. Downloading the file from: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php What is the deal? Am I messing up, or could the img file get corrupted 15 times in a row when I download it?
  7. O.K. My cousin set a travel bug my way so I could help it move on up the east coast. I dropped it in a cache, and then when I got home to log where I dropped it, It asked for the number. I dont have it. What is the correct thing to do? I emailed the bugs owner, is that all I need to do?
  8. Sweet. SO if I have it plugged into a USB power source it will default to running on external power. Then unplug it and it runs on the batteries. That is what I was wanting to know. Thanks for the help!
  9. O.K. I have a garmin etrex venture hc. I want to know fi I put rechargeable batteries in her; when I plug her into my PC will it recharge the batteries? I am also trying to figure out if when I am in the car if I have her plugged into a 12v-to-USB charger will it run on that power or the batteries. Thanks for your time ahead of time...
  10. Yup! You got bear scat. No doubt about it. That is not a full grow bear either or does it look small to everyone else?
  11. As a teacher for the last 15 years, 3s all the way up to 5th graders, I can say without a doubt that Geocaching is good in a multitude of ways. One it helps with large motor skills I.E. walking, climbing, hiking you name it. Two it helps in fine motor skills I.E. Opening and manipulating a geocache once found. Three it helps in abstract thinking and reasoning I.E. What are the clues to finding the cache, where would be a good spot to look for a cache given the terrain/surroundings. Really having spent many a night dreaming up and writing out lesson plans for my classes over the years Geocaching is a ready made lesson plan that you could spend a whole school year doing. Not only does it help your child in all the ways I stated before, but also it enforces the idea of not spending days on end sitting inside in front of a TV or gaming system. It also teaches them about new technology, use of that new technology. All that I stated before pales in comparison to the fact that it connects them in a very visceral way to a world that is much larger than the small world of their family, and school mates. It shows them in a very real way that the world is a very small place. By that I mean that in all my years teaching I worked with inner city kids. Kids that have never even been outside their own neighborhoods. I spent a huge chunk of my time arranging field trips to get them out of the city, take them places their parents would never have even thought to take them. Took the time to show them what all was out there past the asphalt, and glass. Geocaching is a great way to show children that. These are just some things that you might bring up with your lawyer, and your Ex. She sounds like she is out for blood. I have had many friends that have been through this sort of thing. All I can say is keep your head cool. Nothing will make you dumber than getting mad. Anger serve only to lower your IQ, and make you do something dumb. Stay calm, talk to a few of the children's teachers and have them write a letter to the court. Have a few fellow cachers that you know write about their own experiences with their own children. These letter do not seem like they will do much, but they can make a huge difference to a judge that will read them. Remember that the judge is hearing both sides and might not have a clue what our weird little sport is all about. Inform him/her about it, and it might just be that one grain of rice that tips the scale in your favor. Again above all remain calm, and clear headed. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth...then do it again until you can think clear. Good luck and if you would like PM me and I will gladly be a sounding bored for you. Take care, and again good luck! Wind
  12. I get the whole "not messing with nature thing", I do. I also know this a very family oriented activity. I think if there is an obvious hazard that a child. adult, or elderly person might be seriously injured on I think that any cacher should do the bare minimum to make it safe for the next cacher. I am not saying cut a tree down, but in this case I say round it off, or just remove enough of the limb to make it safe for the kids. I have shifted rocks near a cache that were a broken ankle waiting to happen. I have done that for as long as I have been hiking and climbing. I really think its a good thing to do. You take five minutes to make a trail safer to the next person so that the park system or wherever does not have to deal with yet another person being injured on the trail. You are not messing with nature, you are making it so that more people can enjoy it in the future with less risk of a trail being closed off or a park having to spend thousands to send out a response crew. Hope that leg heals up. I have gotten cut like that while rock climbing and it sucks. Worst part is watching your pants leg turn dark red before you get to see the real wound. Heal up quick!
  13. I use my Palm Centro and DocstoGo for all the logs and stuff. Works great. Just takes a few minutes extra to grab any logs and hints.
  14. Being someone who mods Nerf guns, and just about everything else I can tell you that there are really only three glues to use when trying to glue plastic to another type of material. Superglue, Gorilla glue, and Plumbers Goop. All three should work great. Just remember that you need to be VERY careful with Gorilla glue. It will sorta foam up. This is a good thing because it will fill any gaps, but it will also ooze out if you use too much. Hope it helps. PM me if you have any questions. I might be able to point you to a few Nerf write-ups that deal with gluing rubber to plastic.
  15. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite posters on this forum Mama!!! Thank you for that second site. That is exactly what I was looking for. EDIT:: Worked like a charm. See:
  16. I just got my brand new Venture HC and like it plenty. I have been searching for a way to get a more detailed map for just my little town for days now. I can't see paying $100 just to get a road map of my town. What are the other options? I have Adobe Ill, and a ton of other drawing programs. I know Garmin has to have a vector format. Knowing this can I take a hand drawn map of my town and convert it to an .img file and then transfer it to my GPSr? Or is there a website anyone knows of that has some detailed road maps of non-important cities and town?
  17. Thank you for this one. Somehow I missed this page. I thought I had read every single page there was on geocaching.com. Missed this one. Thanks again!
  18. That is what I was looking for. Thanks you! Also what is a reviewer? You have to be reviewed to post a cache? I thought I had a good grasp of what the process was?
  19. O.K. I have searched around and still do not have an answer to my question. I am gearing up to go hide four or so caches that I have worked very hard on. Two of them are kinda iffy to me. I made two that are a statue with a container under them. I know there is a rule about digging. I need to know how literal that rule is. I have seen dozens of caches that are made just like the ones I have. If its soft dirt, and you have talked to the land owner is it ok to push them into the ground? I want to cache, but I also want to put a few caches in spots that I know are very kid friendly. Trouble is the only place to hide any cache in these spots is to push them into the ground. Here is a pic of the basic idea. No i am not using a rubber ducky. It was just a fast model to download in sketchup. The ground would come right to the top of the pill container. Again no I am not using a pill container...they leak too badly. But you get what I am asking...right?
