  1. In other words, a rather boring place to be?

Congratulations to vespaxvespa on his recent 150! Seems like he has really taken a liking to our country-side! Well done, buddy!
  3. My pet hate is those cachers who log a TB into a cache and then immediately log it out again. I'm not sure I understand the logic behind this - yeah, the TB collects miles but if that's not it's goal then why do it? I had to send a polite note to a cacher in Oz who was hanging on to one of my TB's and doing the same thing. He placed it in a cache and left it there pretty quickly. If a TB has a very specific mission then an explanatory note would be appropriate. Unfortunately some people ignore even this and move the TB onto to inappropriate caches.
  4. That's worth considering, once we've settled on a venue. Do we lend them a GPSr so they can find the spot? I politely declined to give these guys my email address - I got the impression they were into extreme adventures and I'm way past that, thanks very much!
  5. I had to delay finding B&F's Reservoirs & Dogs because of lurking security, and on my second attempt the guards walked down to see what I was up to. Okay, so there were no drawn guns and no blowing up of caches, but it was unsettling enough. Or was I just being paranoid?
  6. Thanks GPSFrodo. Good luck with that whole barcode thing, hope you manage to decipher it.
  7. Hey CWF, welcome to the mad, mad, mad, mad world of geocaching. We like it when new people sign up. Here's to lots of quick finds for you!
  8. Things we might need: the usual stuff like sun-screen, hats, foul-weather gear, refreshments and/or picnic hampers, gloves (for picking up icky items), Trash-Out bags, things to place in a cache, swimsuit (if it's near a safe beach), wet-wipes for cleaning up. Erm what else?
  9. I have a TB, Titus Tortoise, that needs to get to UK/Europe. He is currently languishing in Barcode ZA and I've asked the owner GlobalRat if there is any way he can assist in getting Titus to you. Here's hoping!
  10. I think we need to put together a small 'working committee' to plan the event, taking all suggestions into account. Maybe 4 - 5 ppl max, with the option to 'co-opt' others if special skills / contacts / influence is required. I still like the idea of cleaning up one of the beaches at Cape Point. Perhaps all interested parties could meet over coffee / juice somewhere - after Montagu Mayhem perhaps?
  11. Indeed, that would a truly excellent day on which to hold an event. Things we need to decide: location, start and end times, cache placement (do we place one beforehand and have attendees find it, or do we all bring items to add to a mutually-placed cache, etc), what permissions are required and from whom, media involvement (newspapers, etc.) Let's get this thang moving!

Let's just say I like to keep abreast of events. Wolkynou was visiting all of the caches that I'd recently found, and I've been caching with Larks and knew he was approaching 50. Now that I've reached my 100, I'm going to live up to my name and start 'goofing off'. Only kidding. I'll keep the scoreboard ticking over . . .
  13. No perishable items please (food, sweets, etc.), and it depends on the cache size (micro, small, regular, large). Trading is optional, and most people trade items which are not too expensive (costs could mount in the long term). You could even consider having a 'trademark ' item of sorts to trade, as some people do, e.g. a calling card. No dangerous items (knives, matches, lighters, magnifying glasses, alcohol, cigarettes, cigars, poisonous substances, etc. etc.) Otherwise, anything goes, really.

Kudo's to Larks on reaching his 50. Well done, lad!

And here's a milestone of an entirely different sort: I recently bought some travel bug dog tags from geocacher.coza. One of them has the tracking # 543210. How cool is that? I'm sure he didn't mean to let that one go! Perhaps I'll hold it back for the 2007 TB race. Or should I auction it on eBay?
  16. Welcome to the family, Sean.
  17. Here's an interesting conundrum - I recently agreed to maintain a cache in the south peninsula placed by a visitor from Zimbabwe. Problem is, I didn't find it on my first visit, and I haven't heard from the cache owner again (he might still be on the road and not able to access the internet). I've asked for an 'assist' as I'm not going to spend another 30 minutes looking for it. It has been found already, by bob, but he was not working alone . . .

It was fun watching Wolkynou climb the rankings undetected. A sterling effort, sir! Glad to see you're finally listed on the site.
  19. What's with this logging of multiple finds? Has greengrass.j been smoking too many green grass j's? 1000 demerits on the ranking site!
  20. Check out Montagu Mayhem on gc.com . . . Melissa's has a lovely spacious branch in Somerset Rd Green Point. Breakfast anyone? This will not be an official 'event' . . .
  21. I think the challenge is a good idea, and I don't see why we can't aim for 1000. Let's aim high rather than low, and really put SA on the goecaching world map! And for non-members, I promise that the rest of my caches this year will be open to all. I'll even consider downgrading my members-only cache in a few months, if it's possible to do so.
  22. I have two seats available for the Montagu MontEco Mayhem event cache. Could take three, but it might be cramped with all the camping gear. How about the CT cachers who are interested in attending getting together for coffee somewhere sometime soon to discuss logistics? Larks, VespaX, Stef, Bob, r u guys in?
  23. I have a GPSMap 76C with SA Streetmaps V3 - I loaded most of the maps for the Western and Eastern Cape, took up about 15Mb of memory. Seems to be reasonably accurate as far as roads are concerned.
  24. My first new cache for 2006 is a members only. I think I have valid reasons for making it so. But I think you need to be a Premium Member to read the reasons on the cache page.

    Knives

Sweets (candy) and fabric softener are among the more unsual and inappropriate items I've encountered. Non-perishable items only please. Personally, I like finding caches that contain more than plastic toys and bits of twisted wire - it's not just the children who enjoy the finds!
