  1. Oh no, a QuestMaster planned event... now that would be something... Would have liked to make the Moraine event, but you guys had to go and schedule it for the same day that we NEOGeos are having an event in Chardon, Ohio (which I'm responsible for developing some of the caching events for). But I'd definately be interested in other SWPA events... And for the record, NEOGeo is currently just a Yahoo! group and we try and get together and have some sort of caching event each month... although our own website (www.neogeocachers.com I believe) will be coming online soon... we don't want to get involved in bylaws and all that... we'd rather be caching... TTFN, Cache well, and see you around the bend. Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  2. All I can say is if you find yourself in Hueston Woods, skip the Pez Head Cache since it seems to be missing Good luck you guys, have a fun trip down there, and thanks for adopting the travel bug I intended to place in Hueston Woods... Cache well, ... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  3. 9key... I didn't particularly think there was (since my multi-virtual went through the approval process quite smoothly), but from reading the forums, there seems to be segments that think that (As well as the segments that have serious issues with all sorts of other approver/approval issues) In the end, I think it really shouldn't matter what type (traditional/multi/virt/locationless) the cache is, as long as it is well thought out, well planned, well placed, and well, fun... So, apologies if my attempt at a bit of dry wit wasn't as clear, I think the approvers are doing a good job (especially with all the stuff that goes on)... Keep up the good work; Cache well, and see you around the bend... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  4. A Walk Down Millionaire's Row It's a bit involved, but it basically involves walking up and down the historic downtown neighbourhood of the city I grew up in... And if you give a decent explanation as to why it works best as a virt, I think the approvers will be okay with it... But admittedly, my multi-virt was approved before the most recent anti-virtual sentiment... But if you can find an area nearby that might safely handle a physical cachetainer, then it might not be a bad idea to tag a physical to the end of the cache ... (Personally, I'd rather the virtuals be virtuals , and the physicals be physicals , but they're still all geocaches and I'll go and find 'em ...) Disclaimer: The above is the opinion of a sole individual, and does not represent anyone other than himself. So, just take a deep breath, and don't worry too much about it... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  5. I like the getting to see a new area of a park that I've not been to before, or even going back to a really nice area that I've been to before. The trinket trading is a cool idea, and it gets the little ones involved, but I'm there for the hike ... Now the finding the cache when I'm in the general area... the quicker I can find it, the better ... I know some people like the looking for a needle in a haystack searches , but I want to be hiking, not looking under every pile of twigs... On the other hand , one of my next caches I'm putting out is going to be in a decon container, so it might provide a bit more of a search for my local cachers... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  6. bought a tin of cinnamon altoids because I've thought about using the tins as preliminary stages for a three-part multi I'll be putting out... Of course now, I'm addicted to the cinnamon and citrus sours... and have a growing collection of tins... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  7. There were a couple of several stage, several different small city park multi-caches in the Ann Arbor that I didn't have time to do while I was up there, but they seemed like a fun challenge... And, there seems to be a bit of a glut on the seemingly standard three-stage traditional multi here in the Cleveland area... West Creek Preserve PAST-AGAIN Buckeye Trail at Ottawa Point FROM MILL TO HILL and my own soon to be placed MeadowFalls BookCrossing cache. And, our local park district even got in on the act with this cache: Hinckley Tree Identification Trail Cache Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  8. I have a cache that takes people back and forth across the historic downtown section of the city I grew up in. Lots of historical markers to use and a fair amount of (simple) arithmetic to get from stage to stage, but when a large group of local cachers went out and did it (As part of a 12-cache cache caravan day), they all gave it good reviews (except for the fact that it was about 15° and breezy by the time we did it late in the afternoon) A Walk Down Millionaire's Row Doing the whole cache is about a one and a quarter mile walk down city sidewalks (hence the elevated terrain rating of 1.5 stars) and less than an hour of time... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  9. I've done the Night Eyes of Niles cache previously mentioned... it uses reflectors like those off a bicycle... worked quite well with the nearly one dozen flashlights we trained on it (group cache caravan...) There is a night cache in NE Ohio that uses a blinking light as mentioned. There is a hole in the outer shell of the cachetainer through which the light is exposed. The spot it is hidden in and the location in which it is placed should do a very good job of preventing the cache from being seen by 'non-friendly' eyes... Cache is Founding Father Night Cache. Also found this one in a group (though much smaller than the group at Night Eyes of Niles. Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  10. and no BK + SB there... Oh, you meant *that* Sherwood Forest... Yearning to some day visit the Motherland... The *other* SherwoodForest Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  11. this is a good thing... there had been previous caches placed in the park district (which has 11 small parks around Geauga County) without permission... and instead of following the lead of Lake County and instituting a complete geocaching ban, they decided for 2003 to do the compromise thing, and hide 6 caches of their own, and if the impact is not too severe, they are open to expanding the geocaching to guidelines that would be similar to what we currently have here in the Cleveland Metroparks. Would it have been nice if they allowed others' caches this year? Yes, but in this case, some is better than all or none... As for the quality of cache locations -- that I have no concerns about. I know several of the naturalists (And volunteers) who are involved with the GPD Geocaching, and I am sure they will provide quality caches. Yeah, the first one is a little close to the trail, but really looking forward to trying Cache #2 this weekend... And the fact that the park district is this involved is remarkable because they have a smaller staff than the other Local Park Districts, and by far the major part of the effort everyone involved with Geauga Park District put in for 2002 was in the construction and opening of their new Nature Center, so they haven't had as much time to spend with other projects such as geocaching... But it's growing, the volunteers and staff involved with it are quality people (And quality geocachers), the parks are really pretty, and it's something to look forward too... So, when you're in NE Ohio, stop by the West Woods Nature Center and whichever GPD caches are out when you come by... SherwoodForest Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  12. Okay, Neogeocachers... I posted about this on our yahoo! site and I'll post it here... do we want to do a CITO(Cache In, Trash Out) event on the 26th of April as part of the geocaching.com worldwide CITO event? It's something i've wanted to see us do, and i think this will be a good opportunity for us to do it... Cache well, and see you around the bend... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  13. It's something I've wanted us to do as a group, and I'm getting the wheels turning on doing a CITO here in Northeast Ohio... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...

  15. 365 as of today... september 2002 was probably around 300, i think... of course, more than half of that is at the 100 mile distance (north side of columbus, east side of toledo, southeast side of detroit, northwest side of the 'Burgh, and southeast side of Erie Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  16. We're on the way to becoming a fully 'real' club... we have events and such planned (in fact: we're doing a group Cache Caravan tomorrow), but we're working on getting the website up... we have a yahoo! group at groups.yahoo.com/group/NEOGeocachers I've done some caching in Michigan (Ann Arbor Area), and have follwed MiGO for quite a while... and also follow the yahoo groups for NWPA and Central Kentucky(Geocky) So, we're out here, just maybe not as well organized as MiGO. Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  17. Well, I'm a NEOGeocacher , but I'm in NorthEast Ohio -- getting ready for our big Cache Caravan Event tomorrow... I'm sure if you post in the regional forum, you'll find the people you're looking for... *hoping the snow stays to the south* Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  18. Posting here in the forums is a good start. Those of us who are interested in caching in western PA (even if we're in NE Ohio) will spot it, and hopefully the news will spiral out and you'll find the interested folks. I'm intending to take a caching trip in Moraine this spring, and have always wanted to hit the ones on Presque Isle also. There is a core of experienced cachers in both Pittsburgh (I'm sure Lep will speak up soon), and in Erie, so hopefully something will come out of it... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  19. at a picnic that was organized by a central ohio cacher. It happened to be the first OSU home game that day, so it took me 4.5 hours to get to the picnic (3 Rivers Park) instead of the 2.25 it should have taken. There seems to be a fairly active core down there, and I'm sure they'll start speaking up, after the OSU euphoria dies off... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  20. Although... I still think traditionals and true virtuals should be only one type of count, since they (and event caches) are all based on finding a pre-ordained location. Locationlesses (and I loathe the term) should be a separate count (as benchmarks are) since they are different from 'true' geocaches in that there isn't just the one 'correct' location. For my own cache log purposes (an Excel spreadsheet), I assign a number to the regular caches (traditional/virtual/event) which corresponds to the Lego Geocacher Signature Item I leave behind (So how do I leave one behind at a virtual? Easy, I try and give it to the person who created the virtual/event cache. And it's worked for 2 of the 3 virts I've done, and I should be able to get the 3rd to its 'rightful' owner soon.) In the same spreadsheet I add the locationlesses I've found (6 currently) but assign them a number of L(number). Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  21. For anyone interested, there were two geocaching-related articles in yesterday's (Sun Jan 12th) Cleveland Plain Dealer. The first talks about an expedition the reporter took with local übercachers CJB4589, and conversations he had with yours truly (I'm the geocacher and Chemist by day). The second is a description about different cache types and policies in local park districts. The article can be found on the web at: http://www.cleveland.com/sundaymag/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/sunday_mag/104245393689930.xml Hmmm, the link didn't take directly to the article... if it doesn't click on Sunday Magazine and look for the article dated Jan 12th entitled cache explosion, the other article is titled finding your way. Okay, the link should work now... Cache well, and see ya round the bend... [This message was edited by SherwoodForest on January 13, 2003 at 08:14 PM.]
  22. Depending on when the event is, I'd like to come down and do the cache trip (like Lep mentioned). Having met Eli of EliJoMikMiNi at two of the Cleveland MetroParks Geocaching Events, I'd like to return the favour ... that and find some caches in a 4th state (W.Va.) And Lep, I'd also like to be kept awares if you do do an event down in the 'Burgh , since I am intending to cache my way down the western counties of PA. And, don't laugh -- I'm thinking of going up to Michigan for their big gathering the end of February -- did some caching around Ann Arbor, and would like to meet some of the other Michigan Cachers. What does that say about me that I want to drive 5+ hours to go to geocaching get-togethers , but usually wimp out about driving to the grocery store to get groceries (a whole .4 miles away) Oh well ... hope to see you all somewhere ... sometime... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  23. I've used the good ol' yellow for my first year of GPS'n and Geocaching, but looking at the literature and seeing all that the SporTraks could do, well... I fell in love with the SporTrak. Just picked up a SporTrak Pro today, and started playing with all the stuff it can do... *kewl* Now, just need to get the Topo software so I can upload the TopoMaps into it(the real big reason I wanted the SporTrak). So, tomorrow, I'm going to go out and play with the new GPS, and use it to scout some cache locations... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  24. Everyone is certainly welcome to come to the event cache on the 21st to discuss different things -- in fact, we want to try and get the eastern part of the area more involved in hosting the events (Yes, we do know that it is a bit of a drive for y'all to come to the cleveland area, but we'd be glad to come out there if someone was hosting an event (like sunday's event in the GPD, where most of our West-Side contingent made it out to show our support for GPD's entry into the geocaching craze)) Yes, the event is being held on the south side of Cleveland, and that's only because it was the location most readily worked with us to get an event scheduled this month. So, hopefully the weather will be clear (for once), and everyone can make it in to this event, and if we want something out further on the east side, we'll gladly do one if someone's willing to do the leg work. Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
  25. Like any other sort of cache, if it is done well, it's a positive addition to geocaching (IMHO). I know there is significant opposition to virtuals (and locationlesses) but I enjoy doing them, if there is something about it that interests me. In fact, I just submitted an eight-stage virtual that will take people on a walk through the historic section of the city where I grew up. I think it's a good cache, and I think the local cachers will enjoy it... Cache well, and see ya round the bend...
