  1. Cleveland Metroparks They place their own caches, but I don't think they allow individuals to place them. Okay, let me set the record straight on this. As a geocaching volunteer for Cleveland Metroparks, and someone who has hidden six permitted geocaches within the Cleveland Metroparks... Cleveland Metroparks has a permit policy in place for privately placed geocaches (in fact, it was one of the earliest, implemented in Spring of 2002) within their parks. Most of the other local county metroparks that have finally gotten on board with geocaching have basically used the CMP as a model. I think BrianSnat was thinking of Geauga Park District (just east of Cleveland), which hid their own caches in 2003 (And in 2004) but did not allow individually-placed caches in their parks in 2003. As of Feb 2004, they have had a permit policy in place, and there are currently 2 privately-placed caches in GPD (and probably more this summer is the waters ever go down (A spot I marked for a possible cache would have been repeatedly under the Cuyahoga River this spring))
  2. Well, having seen the excellent quality of avatars being done by the fine people of the forums, I would also like to make a request. My current avatar is obviously a Lego Robin Hood. This was quite fitting back in 2002 when I was leaving Lego Geocachers as my signature item (but then I started finding a lot more caches, and wasn't able to find as many of the stock minifigs I was using). I was thinking maybe a scene where Robin Hood is using his GPS( I use a basic Yellow E-trex) to waylay the Sherriff of Nottingham to raid the swag from his cache-coach. Thanks to all of you for your efforts, and especially to AmishHacker for making some threads really worth watching... (this and the modified for humour avatar thread) Cache well, and see you around the bend... SF
  3. re: Yellow Jeep Travel Bugs. Yes, I wrote in to the address given, got the stock answer with confirmation number, and I haven't heard anything since (and I here that they are shipping to the other local groups...) Dunno if someone else stepped up for NEOGeo before I did, I asked on our yahoo! group and noone said anything, so I submitted the info... Oh well, i guess them's the breaks...
  4. okay, had to do a little research to even find exactly where Crawford County was (and I'm even in Ohio) Fear not, I'm sure as the Columbus people clear out Cowtown, they'll start looking for other caches to find, and one day they'll find your caches... We've mentioned on the COG forums about trying to bridge the areas between the main cities (to entice cachers to hit the areas not near one of the big cities), and the area around Mansfield and points west is one of the areas to bridge. There's a couple along I-71, the new one in Ashland, so eventually things will start picking up... it just takes time to catch hold, and even moreso in the between areas... I've been trying to help fill in the area east of Cleveland between Cleveland and Youngstown -- I have a cache that's had a whole whopping 2 finds in six weeks. And my one in Warren -- excluding visits from the Cache Caravan to Youngstown, had had very few visits in about a year and a half. Keep them out, and it wouldn't hurt to place more if you can find good spots... Someday, we will get out there and find them... [feeling guilty that I haven't found any of Robespierre's caches, must try and schedule a visit out Crawford county way (see if I can tie it into a Columbus run sometime, or Toledo...)]
  5. Hey, we're just glad that you're back up and all functional again, KA... now if only I knew if NEOGeo was getting Yellow Jeeps...
  6. ah, a future entry for the Columbus Day Geocaching Film Festival?
  7. not exactly sure where in the Falls those parks are, but I live just up the valley in North Royalton, so I'd be willing to learn where the parks are, and maybe even drop a cache out that way...
  8. I'd love to make it to another TRIGO event, and meet Cindy (again), but I'm headed SW this CITO day instead of SE. I'll be picking trash with the folx of OKIC this year... but hope to make it down TRIGO way sometime... SherwoodForest
  9. Way to go PA... Huzzah... Gotta work on finding that cache spot in my nearest PA S.P. CWASYATB
  10. I second Bjorn's recommendations -- three Columbus caches -- The Turtle's Back Cache, EIEIO, and Hometown History (actually in Marion) snuck onto my top 10% list -- also would recommend zoisrus@girdled road in Lake County...
  11. I also voted yes, but along the concept of JamieZ's (et al) concept of the checkbox within the primary log -- duplicate logging would be too much effort, but having a way to tie it in to the regular Found, Not Found, or Note... a definate thumbs up... The positive image benefits would certainly seem to outweigh the 'cheaterism' -- maybe it's just because we're lucky here in Cleveland -- don't have many falsifiers (just one, and he seems to be in hiding for now...) Plus, I'd get to use all those handy CITO containers I grabbed at the MiGO event -- well, once the snow is finally gone, again...
  12. I think part of it is because a significant number of the cachers (At least in the Eastern great lakes part of the midwest) follow the local club sites/discussion groups/forums moreso than the regional forum here. So a lot of our kudos recognition goes on on the regional club sites (NEOGeo, NWOGeo, TRIGO, MiGO, COG, OKIC, GEOCKY), etc. But I certainly second the congratulations to all the cachers mentioned above... My goal now is to get to 300 by my birthday (April 2) -- only need 37 more -- but we keep getting so much snow... Cache well, and see you around the bend...
  13. well, for these two to three months of the year where everything is frozen under, it's still nice to be able to get out and look for something, some of the LCs are kinda lame, but some are really interesting, and look forward to starting a couple more LCs after they lift the moratorium... Of course, most Ohio winters aren't as bad as these last two have been... and in some ways this year has been worse because of the fact that we've had a couple spells of freezing rain freeze a layer of ice over the snow, so things are either quite slippery, or you step, and then crunch down through the inches of snow below the icy crust... not fun for hiking wither way... Of course, as cold as it got here (~10F/-12C) still not as frigid as what you guys had up there in Canada... brrr.... Cache well, and see you around the bend.
  14. Oops, I'd thought I had replied to you... must have forgotten to hit send. But it's probably a good thing... Did a little more checking and it turns out that the Oakwood which is the sister city of Outremont is a suburb of Dayton, and not the smaller suburb near where I work... D'oh! Sorry, my bad... but thanks for the offer of help... I may check with some of the Dayton-area cachers on one of the local forums, and see if anyone there is interested, and direct them your way... Again, sorry for the apparent lack of response... I did try to reply *shrug* Merci beaucoup et bonsoir, SherwoodForest
  15. I'm sure somebody else will pop in with appropriate Markwells, but the general opinion as I recall was that even though you all found it as part of a group, each member in the group has their own unique personal experience of finding the cache, and the on-line log is as much a reflection of sharing that unique personal experience with other geocachers out there reading cache logs/watching that cache. I'd much rather if the e-mails I get for caches on my watch list were nice little snippets of experiences, and not " #18 of 57 for the day TNLNSL TFTC" I view each cache log as a chapter in the ongoing geocaching story... Admittedly, there are times where my logs have been little more than a quick recount of finding it followed by a recounting of my trade -- and that's more often a reflection of logging the find at whatever absurdly late hour that I'd gotten online. So, take the time, any have everybody log, and see if there aren't noticable differences in the logs.
  16. wasn't this protocol also put in to aid with the approval process for park districts that require you to show them the cache page before they will approve the cache for placement? You scope the cache, submit for tentative approval, print out the cache page, go to the park district office, show them the cache page, get their approval, place the cache, come back to gc.com and tell the approvers it is now in place, and then... Bam, it's active...
  17. egads.... I own several caches, and haven't cross-refernced logs, and have absolutely no intention of starting now... I get the emails of who has found and logged the cache on-line, and almost all of them are geocachers I recognize, either form having met them in person at events, or from seeing a pattern of their logs on other caches on my watch list. If there is some true concern about a 'spoofed' log or something, then I could see doing the cross-referencing, but otherwise what's the point? You'd be checking that people you know are geocachers and have no reason to lie about finding the cache have indeed found the cache? talk about lack of trust in your fellow cachers... I think you are taking an overly literalistic interpretation of the guidlines there... I think making sure the container is in good condition, etc. is a far more important thing to be worried about, rather than if this reputable local cacher LIED to me when they said they found my cache... Keep in mind, this is supposed to be FUN! I think some people are starting to forget that... Re-engage lurk...
  18. yeah, as the year goes on, and we get more cross-attendance from group to group, we can chat with each other and figure out what form, if any, a statewide organization would need to have... until then, the COG forums are probably the best place to go to deal with "Ohio" as an entity, because there are NWO people there, OKIC people, and myself and others from NEOGeo, and the COG faithful So, it'll be a building process, but what we have in place right now will cover a lot... so, let's give the local groups room to do what they are doing quite well, and things will grow from there... if you want to join another group to say you are a member of The Ohio group, fine, but all the real work is being done by the local groups at the local level. Cache well, and see you around the bend. And personally, I still think Michigan would benefit is there was more regionalization instead of state-wide... If I go to Ann Arbor to go geocaching (as I did in 2002), would a group that is as active in Detroit as in Sault Ste Marie help me as much as a southern tier (Huron River Valley) group? I was fortunate in that i quickly was directed to Ann Arbor's ubercacher, but the thing I think MiGO lackes(or lacked when I was last fairly active with it), was regionalization... which the Ohio and PA models are covering well... Glad it works (or you think it works) for Michigan, but that's no guarantee the same model will work (or is even good) for Ohio or Pennsylvania But I think we're doing a good job, and we'll keep working at it...
  19. Greetings, I am looking for any geocachers in the Montréal region who would be willing to help with logging the Sister Cities locationless geocache. One of the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio near where I work is Oakwood, Ohio, and one of Oakwood's sister cities is Outremont. Thanks in advance. Cache well, and see you around the bend.
  20. the main benefit I would see would be getting better notification to the other area groups about the events going on in other regions. We've had up to 100 people show up at some NEOGeo/CMP events, and there are plans for some other state-wide-type events and we would like to get the different groups together at these events. But, since so many of us 'regulars' are cross-membered to all the regional groups, it's mainly a matter of getting the word out on the other regional forums about these big events. NEOGeo is holding its 2004 planning meeting tomorrow, so hopefully we'll have a good idea what big events we will be doing this year, and will disseminate that information to the other near-by groups. And even if you did have the state-wide group, I don't know if you'd reach as many people as if you got it out to all the regional groups... Plus, it would mean one more group to follow; and I'm already on NEOGeocachers, NWOGeocachers, NWPAGeocachers, COGeocaching, TRIGO (Pittsburgh). Probably need to join one of the Cinti groups sometime, but the information is there, and hopefully we cross-membered regulars can work harder to get that info to all the groups...
  21. well, I'm planning a cachepedition for New Year's Day and haven't decided which area I'm going to cache, so there is a decent chance I may get out there and get the ball rolling (as it were). We want Pittsburgh to win, right? I mean, the browns are so pathetic! At least they finally got rid of the offensive coaches! get some intelligent coaching out there, something resembling an offensive line, and restructure so that Couch comes back, and maybe we'll finally see something good in the north coast.... Til then, go Dolphins!!!! PS Yes, I know they didn't make the playoffs, but at least they're better than the mistake by the lake called the browns...
  22. sorry, don't think I'll be joining, all I saw was a form saying fill out which card you found, blah blah blah... and since we already have the NEOGeocachers website and yahoo! group forums, it would be a bit too redundant... Cache well, and see you around the bend.
  23. While I too would like to see some centralized (not central, since that's already being done) Ohio geocaching group, having all the regional groups really helps. Yes, it would be nice to be able to discuss with the Cinti and Columbus people about geocaching topics that affect the whole state, but given that even just in our NEOGEO (NorthEast Ohio) there has been a concern about encompassing too large an area, with smaller localized groups forming within the larger NEOGEO group. With having as many members as we do just in NorthEast Ohio, it's gotten really ahrd to organize an event because of concerns of having people drive in form the west side or the east side, or coming up from the south, and that we can easily have more than 40-50 people show up just for a dinner get-together. So, a statewide group will never, nor should it, supplant the regional groups that really let everyone congeal more as a group. In fact, I've always wondered why Michigan has just the one group, since the state is so large, but that's just me... But I think for planning/assisting for larger statewide/regional events (those on the order of 300+ people), it would be great to have some place where we NEOGEOs can plan and chat things out with the COGs or the OKICs, the WCOs and the NWOGeos. Anyone know if there is a group for Southeastern Ohio -- then again that is the most sparesly populated part of the state? So think regionally, act locally, right? Seriously, I think an Ohio Caching group would be a benefit, as long as it limits itself to truly state-wide concerns, and leave the local concerns to the local groups.
  24. well, when it gets to the Youngstown area, I'd be glad to help move it from there up to North Royalton. or maybe to Chardon so that GeaugaGarmin can move it over.
  25. Well, since Columbus is a whole lot closer to the North Coast City than Saint Louis, I agree with my primate companion that there will undoubtedly be a strong presence on the part of NEOGeocachers -- in fact I'm sure this will be popular with all of Ohio's caching groups. Look forward to getting down to Columbus again and see all the COGgers again. NEOGeo was going to have a cachepedition to Columbus but it fell through, maybe we'll have to reinvent it and combine it with this event? Cache well, and see you around the bend.
