  1. Is this cache related? I might be able to help, but I need to see some of the background info along with it... Masters in Mathematics here.
  2. I fall into exactly the same camp as StarBrand. Preforms are MICRO caches. 50 Cal Ammo Cans are REGULAR caches - not large. Well, at least you're following some of the guidelines!
  3. It's gonna take a change in the descriptions on this page. Just because you say so doesn't mean anything. Sweet so it's settled! By simple logic, anything larger than a 35mm canister is considered small. That makes it easy! "Sizes micro: e.g. 35mm film canister or smaller small: Holds only a small logbook and small items. regular: e.g. ammo box large: e.g. 5-gallon bucket (about 20 liters) other: See the cache description."
  4. The iphone version has an alert to notify when new caches are posted? That'd be awesome on android. Only reason I have my email check so frequently on my android is bc I don't want to be too far behind on notificatons for new geocaches. A notification system might even make me THINK about paying $10 for an app that's worth about $2.00.
  5. Haha I get Outside magazine as well. Definitely never even heard of it, just started showing up in my mailbox. Don't think I've read a page, but I keep them in my "to read" stack, which gets bigger every month since I play on my Android when I'm in the library now instead of reading...
  6. Here's my QR code multi-cache which I posted about 6 months ago in Orlando. Unfortunately, it hasn't seen a ton of action, but the final is a pretty cool hide. I've thought about knocking it down to two stages, but I like to make tougher caches... GC2E3TC
  7. hahaha awesome! but I'd say hid-a-keys are the WORST. they're not even meant to be water tight! ridiculous.
  8. Hmm. Where does one get Gatorade preforms? That would make a nice cache container. I was just looking at an OJ container and wondering about that as well, but all I normally see are the smaller soda bottle ones. I'm lucky enough to have a friend that works at a plastic bottle factory, and that's one of their main bottles. When I first started geocaching, he gave me a few. The plastic is thicker, and they have the big mouth, so the preform is nice and solid and enough room for a coin and some smaller items, including a log.
  9. Man, my preforms are bigger than all of these! I can see that some of these are easily micros. Pretty cool, I was looking for a picture of mine but couldn't find any. As long as nobody is listing them as "regular" i think everyone will be alright.
  10. No its not. Clearly a micro. From the two pages of thread here, doesn't seem like it's so clear at all, although the majority do seem to go with Micro. Also, if it were so clear, they wouldn't be using words like "approximately." And that's the old rules that are being quoted. No longer listed that way, so again, not so clear. Some people see the size and think "how big does it look" and others think "how much liquid or items will it hold." It's all a matter of perception. When micro specifically says 35mm can or smaller, many will look at the preform and instantly conclude that it's 'bigger' than a 35mm canister, so it must be a small. This is often the case when referring to size, image wins. Volume is a little trickier to perceive. I think both sides of the argument have good points. Maybe Groundspeak could make the blowhards happier if they had a page with a bunch of pictures of different containers and labeled them. Or maybe they could add useless '.5s' and really screw things up!
  11. Call it what you want! It's obviously on the line. I know my gatorade preforms are about 3 times as thick as that thin thing and I definitely list them as small. I look forward to the nano classification, I think that will help.
  12. Nah, nothing like that at all! It'd be a field puzzle, which would need many many film canisters. All in one location, not spread all over. Just thinking....
  13. Kinda what I was picturing. 50 gallon garbage bags full of them being dumped out back in the dumpster... which is exactly what I want for a nice puzzle cache... I'm sure Orlando has some photo shops like that. May check ebay to see what they have. Thanks cachers!
  14. It seems 1 out of 4 caches in Central Florida are in the little film canisters... where do people get them? I was thinking about just asking for some at a local photo shop but I figure they must buy them in bulk. So where do you get yours? I mean, not that many people use cameras with film anymore... do they? Bo
  15. yeah, I knew I'd give it away with the description of the park. I can't believe there aren't any caches in this park. I'm working on mine now and trying to make it a good one. While I like the way you think, I think they'll want to know where all the stages are, if there are items at each stage, and for mine there will be. I've narrowed it down to a few multi stage caches and I'm headed up to the park today to talk with the manager. wish me luck!
  16. exactly my plan. I'm going to give them as much information as I can, and also present a few different options if they don't like any of my ideas. I found about 15 different hiding spots so I think I'll be able to make it work no matter what.
  17. 1000 feet doesn't really seem reasonable to me. I could understand 100' or 250' or at the most 500'. 1000' will almost wipe out the entire park as it is rather long, and not super wide. Considering the fact when I went to the main Orange County parks and rec office nobody even had a clue what geoCaching was, I wonder how they came up with the guidelines. Some of you made valid points about not wanting it to interfere with neighborhoods and such, yet there are about 5 holes on the disc golf course that run along the housing line, and I've regularly seen discs hit houses and go into yards. So obviously they aren't too worried about bothering the houses. Like I said, I won't be doing anything without permission, but I'm hoping they may give me a little leniency on the 1000'. Is there a way to get statistics on cachers? Like number of cachers in central florida, etc? Thanks for the advice everyone!
  18. I found a large county park in the middle of Orlando that has ZERO caches in it and I really want to put either an awesome multi-stage cache or a race-type cache in it. The park is rather big and has softball fields, 2 18-hole disc golf courses, a cricket/football field, dog park, bmx dirt track, lakes and docks, a stream with bridges, golf practice area, parking, a gymnasium, and more! The only problem is, some of the guidelines for this county's parks are rather silly... Cache can NOT be placed within 1,000 feet of neighboring houses or commercial properties adjacent to park perimeters. A maximum of 1 cache per 25 acre area How silly is the first one? 1,000 feet? that's ~1/5 of a mile! The park is 160 acres. There are LOTS of awesome hiding spots and I want to take advantage so that's why I'm going for a multi-stage or race type. I guess I could widdle it down to 6 hides but I was hoping for a few more. Also, if I do multi-stage, that can technically just be ONE cache. So that might be the way to go. I've already stopped by and got the application and spoke with one of the site managers and she seemed open to the idea, but I figure a list of ways that geoCaching can help the park couldn't hurt my chances of getting a little leniency. So, what I need from you guys is anything you can think of that is positive about having some caches on the park site! I already have thought of... advertisement, getting more people to discover this park cache in trash out
  19. Just started geoCaching today and this was the 2nd one I found. I literally jumped back and almost rolled onto my back...
