  1. You know the tomb didn't really bother me at all. Did it by myself and I was more cold than spooked. Got messed around on my coordinates which caused more frustration than anything. I was familiar with the area, it can be downright dangerous going too deep in there during or after rain. The area floods and you can find yourself trapped behind shallow ponds as well as becoming very disoriented. Luckily the cache isn't very far off the road. The only thing that bothered me was the strange noises from the east that sounds like wind. Although you can't feel any wind at the parking area. It's either wind or flocks of birds moving in the swampy area.
  2. That's what I get as well I have 20 finds if you subtract the ones that are archived. My PQ using just the states highlighted and subtracting my finds came up with 280. 280+20=300. So I don't think you need to do two PQ's in order to get them all.
  3. I'd say someone could do 10 with no problems, 20 if you work at it, and 30+ depending on your skill level and ability and/or willingness to night cache and how early you start. It's hard for me to judge since I've not tried to do a large number since I live here and do them as they show up. If you prefer caches that are good hikes away from the city. There are at least 10 caches that are great in Mohawk park north of town. Many of them placed on the Oxley nature center grounds by the ONC staff. If you plan to spend the evening in Tulsa please feel free to stop by this cache. It starts at 7:00 and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun. It's always nice to meet cachers from other areas. We will be donating items to the homeless shelter again this year and will be playing "Dirty Santa". What's a geocaching party without trade items!
  4. I decided that I wanted to go paperless. I've always been pretty much paperless as I often refuse to carry the cache page with me. Just too much trouble to print them all when I usually do 10-20 when I go caching. I usually print way more than I need. With all of the new puzzle caches, night caches, and other twists in the evolution of caching it becomes harder to go without the pages. I'm planning a big trip soon and It would be nice not to have to research all the caches first but do them on the fly as we can while travelling. Trying to load up the laptop in the field is a joke as well. Who wants to go back to the car or wait for the laptop to boot up just to look at one page? I'm not that patient. So I decided to get a PDA. While I did spring for a higher priced mapping GPS, I didn't have the need for something fancy or the money for something expensive in a PDA. I looked in several pawn shops and on E-bay. The pawn shops are selling beat up PDA's for way too much and the guys on E-bay want to hit you with that hidden $15 shipping charge. I decided with the $99 Etrex Yellow of the Palm world. The Zire 21, did it for me. The Zire of course with 2MB and only $20 cheaper was a joke. The Zire 21 has 8MB and does everything I want it too. Of course it isn't color and doesn't have a backlight. But I take a headlamp caching all the time and I don't need color for what I'm doing with it. My advice is if you plan to use the PDA for lots of other things then maybe a better unit is for you. However, if you want a brand new unit that is a very base model strictly for geocaching then I highly reccomend the Zire 21. I took it this last holiday weekend for the first time. Kept it buttoned in my shirt pocket most of the time. My previous solo record for caches was around 13 mostly because I don't prepare. While prepared with others I have hit over 30 in a day. With the PDA in hand I hit the trail. Most of the caches were not drive-bys and several of them required thick bushwacking of 1/3 to 3/4 of a mile. They were spread out over a large area as well. I still managed to pick up 17 caches in a relatively short time. Mostly due to the PDA. My little blue notepad and black pen sure were jealous that I wasn't using them to log my notes for the day.
  5. I need a good picture of Signal to use for one of my cache pages that I'm submitting soon. I did a search and only came up with a few hits. Mostly ones that are too small or from the T-shirt with the kid on it. I want a good size picture not one that is avatar size. I can always reduce the size if needed for the page. Anyone have a Markwell of one from an earlier post? Better yet just post it here. Shouldn't there be pictures of Signal on the acceptable use page with the other logos? I assume signal is fair game for a cache page since I don't plan on altering him.
  6. Did something just the opposite one time. I was trying not to use my head light at a rest stop cache. It was about 1:00 am on the way home and their were several truckers and people parked in the distance. Figured most of them were sleeping but I didn't want them to see me snooping around the woods. Got very near where the cache was and flashed my light just a bit to see and saw the cache. As I retrieved it and sat on a large rock an armadillo that must have been near it starting rustling. About fell off the rock and broke my neck trying to get that light on!
  7. Here's one for the Unusual category of caches. A Hair Raising Experience is everything it states it is.
  8. Out of my 415 caches I'd say that around 300 have been solo. I like to cache with others but enjoy being by myself as well. If someone wants to go with me, fine, but it has never stopped me from going it on my own. Knowing a lot more geocachers these days than when I started I have started to do more group hunts.
  9. Honestly this doesn't surprise me. I was actually more surprised to hear that people were allowed to hide caches on NWR properties. We have been banned from hiding caches at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge since late 2001 when the Comanche Stash and Corkscrew cache were removed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Efforts to restore caching in that area fell on deaf ears. The removal of those caches is what started the Oklahoma Geocachers to organize in Oklahoma City. TAG was created in Tulsa after my visit to one of the OKC meetings. We have established many virtual caches in that area since then. I have enjoyed them greatly. Even the one where we ran face to face with a buffalo that we didn't see. Luckily he left us alone. Although with the virtual cache crackdown creation of new cahces have all but dried up in the area.
  10. 42? That's not the question that's the answer to everything.
  11. I think that the poll lock is discriminatory to all the intelligent polls out there.
  12. Not a single post here since the forums went back online. May be doing some spooky night caches this weekend. Maybe I'll have some stories.
  13. It would appear the poll feature is turned off. Any reason for that?
  14. How long before THIS FUNCTION! gets abused and banned.
  15. New board I must play, but at least I'm doing it here. Can't beleive they let us have this function. I can see it getting removed quickly when people decide to start posting very long messages is bold annoying C oLoRs! but the ninja is cool

  17. quote:Originally posted by umc:There is geodashing and MinuteWar too. Check out the newest creation Geo Golf as well. Played three holes today and plan to hit a few more in a minute. Found at least 2 places to hide geocaches in the process. I'm already thinking about having a GeoGolf tournament event set on a 1km scale in a local park. -beatnik-
  18. Wow, just noticed this post. Must have missed it previously. Make sure you hit Mingo on I-70 in western KS. Oldest existing geocache and great place for travel bugs. In colorado there is a coin exchange cache called Pete's on Guard. Both of these are really easy on and off I-70 finds. Have done both of those on trips to the Vail area in the summer. Both are perfect for hitting when with non-geocachers that may not be thrilled about stopping. There is also a westbound rest stop cache called Westward Ho!. It is west of Salina but it's a little tougher to get to. Some barbed wire crossing and tall grass. I did it in Teva sandals and shorts so I guess it can't be to bad. Although my legs itched like crazy for awhile. -beatnik-

Looks like the National Park Service finally got wind of what was going on down there. Apparently none of those caches were approved. I had a feeling they would disapear sooner or later. Luckily I got to find several of them first. -beatnik-
  20. quote:My question is this...is it alright to log a cache if I didn't use a gps to find it? The search is the same, I just happen to know the land directions. Yes -beatnik-
