  1. With the spring thaw I decided to set up the Garmin again for our second season. I started to panic when I seen all of my smiley's gone. Thank goodness its only a glitch in the "Matrix".
  2. Amen! If your not into Social networking I can understand that. I don't mind it. I talk to a great many Friends I wouldn't otherwise talk to. I know it's not for everyone.... But for the people who do like it, it would be nice to have a working banner. Thats all.
  3. Thanks for staying on topic. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I tried all the tips from this post and none worked. To bad. I'm proud of my finds.
  4. I've never understood the "one box for games, one box for email/internet" thought process- having said that there is a Wii in the house for the games that aren't released across multiple platforms. There are cheaters and hackers on X-Box and PS3 online games too. There are also systems admins that boot PC game cheaters, just like there are for console on-line cheaters. You can lose your WoW account just like you can have your Live account banned for cheating. The on-line environments for PC vs consoles are almost identical with most of the recent releases. I haven't seen a virus in this house since 1998. I think it's more about user demographics and surfing habits than anything else. My father-in-law always gets malware on his PC after a visit from his wife's grand-kids. I recently worked on a PC for a friend with a pre-teen-aged daughter that had been "watching movies on-line" and I found 40+ infections of some kind of malware or another. Worked on a friend of my dad's PC and found the same. Both systems had no protection what-so-ever and had a handful of different Trojan infections that were opening the gates to let in all sorts of fun stuff. My 1.5 year old hardware is just as fast as the day I bought it too. Time for a mobo and video upgrade! Viruses are more prevalent on Windows for one reason and one reason alone- market share. Don't kid yourself. I'm not even going to entertain this anymore because this argument never goes anywhere. I like Macs, you like PC's. I can talk about 1,000's of reasons why I like Macs and you could do the same for windows. Whatever.... There are cheaters and hackers on X-Box and PS3 online games too. I also play Live and PSN and the only cheaters I have encountered are people dropping out before the end of a game. I have seen no mods or hacks. When I was online with the PC (yes I was once a Windows Fan) I played Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Warcraft and Nascar (Seirra). I always ran across guys with mods and hacks. That is why I no longer play. What fun is it if you cheat. Just like those people who Log caches they never found. Whats the point? Its about accomplishments not if you can cheat better then your opponents. Sorry, stepping down off my soap box. Like I said, there is never a winner in this argument.
  5. The touch screen works well on the Oregon but I found that using my daughters sylist from her DS to type my logs, was more accurate then my fat fingers. *Just a tip*
  6. Oh, not this garbage again. Pocket queries. Pocket queries. Pocket queries. Did I miss something here? What does PQ's have to do with EC or WM's? PQ will let you search for Earthcaches. However PQs don't exist for Waymarking- it would help so much if WM's could use PQs. Gotcha. Still doesnt earn me a "smiley".

  9. Its all about the "Smiley" man. I like to see stats. It gives me the big warm fuzzy feeling when I see what I accomplished. Both Waymarks and Earthcaches take you places you may not otherwise know about. I have seen more new things these last couple months due to Geocaching, then I would have ever found on my own. I love the earthcache idea as they are intresting and I really dig some of the waymarks. If it comes down to me searching out a EC or a WM, it will be a EC because I can get my "Smiley". Link the WM somehow and I'm in.
  10. Two words. Smart Phones. Thats how I started thie year. The iPhone has a trial period of 3 caches. I had nothing to lose. Before this you would have to buy a GPS unit and that is a hard sale if your not sure if you are going to like the hobby/sport. I have since moved on from the iPhone due to the last update, to a Garmin but the iPhone was my gateway drug to serious caching with the family.
  11. link I don't know about that one, but this one is working fine for me. How did you get it to post on your profile? Mine wont? I have see that some users were able to get it to work properly but somewhere the buttom to add it to your profile disappeared and the creater has not fixed it.
  12. Call me when I can play my games on your Mac/Linux box. I also am a Mac man. I have a 360, PS3 and Wii to play games on. There are to many cheaters and Hackers on PC online games. Not to mention my 2 1/2 year old Mac is as fast as the day I bought it and I have never installed any system robbing virus, malware or spyware programs. Call me when you get done running your 2nd virus scan of the day. Wow, this thread changed directions... LOL
  13. I had the same question. I am lucky enought to have a Cabela's right down the road from me and they have a 60 day return policy so i bought them both (on a credit card of course ). I bought them both to try them out for a week and keep the one I like the best. I'm on vacation this week so they have been put through the paces. Now I'm not well versed with using a GPS and I'm sure I'm not using even half of the features some of you well seasoned cachers would use but I must say I really like the Oregon. It's really easy to use and navigate. I even had my wife logging caches as i drove to the next one. I love my wife but tech savy she is not so this was a testamate to how easy the interface was. We didnt notice to much of a differance on accuracy so that was a non-issue. they both put us right on the caches in the open field and got us really close in tree cover. Due to the Oregon's touch screen, it can be a little tricky to read in bright sunlight until we figured out how to hold it. You will see there is a trick to reading it. What we do is tilt the unit forward and you will see there is a visual sweet spot. Bright sunlight doesnt even slow us down anymore so the srceen became another non-issue. This is just my exsperience and I am a newbie but the Oregon 450 is the unit I'm putting my money on. Both are great units but the Oregon is so easy, why make a hobby complicated.
  14. I know it can be blocked, I'm just saying that I think the Geocache community is big enough to warrant something that post and tracks our progress.
  15. works on mine.... http://www.facebook.com/frank.wester I can't see you FB account but this is a know proplem with the app.
  16. Post the link, i do not seed any geocache application on Faceboook link
  17. I vote Mystery. My understanding for a Multi are the user would be required to find multiple caches to find the final cache. In this case you are counting what the owner is requesting, in otherwords your answering questions. But I'm new so what do i know.....
  18. I seen an application on Facebook that said it would place a cache counter on your profile but unfourtunately it doesnt work. It would also be nice to see your finds posted on your wall automatically including milestones. If they can get Farmville to post useless updates every 2 minutes you would think someone cold get something like this to work for us.
  19. Is there an easy way to create a PQ of a single users placed caches? I found a user that has creative hides and would like to create a PQ just for him.
  20. Wow, the more I learn about my Garmin (the first GPS unit I have owned), the less I believe I will be using my iPhone at all. The family and I are new to caching so we are by no means fast at finding caches but the Garmin is waaaaaay faster in the field. I think we lost focus on the thread that started out as a Garmin vs iPhone and turned it into the overall accuracy of the entire GPS infrastructure. I placed my GPS on a few caches (everyone does when they get a new unit ) and it was in the 2-4 ft range. To me, if I can't find something withing that range then I really suck or the person who hide it did a great job. I'm confortable with the Garmins accuracy and I could live with the iPhones accuracy but on a hunt the speed and seeing me in tree cover is more important . That's where the iPhone fails. I'm glade Grounspeak screwed up the update of the iPhone app so that the phone was unusable for caching, otherwise I may never seriously started looking at new a GPS. Behind every cloud there is a silver lining.
  21. yes and yes. first connect the unit to your PC and take a look at the freshly appeared storage drive, especially in the \garmin\ directory. for logging your finds, go here and upload the geocache_visits.txt file. once you're done with that, delete it off the device so you're off to a fresh start for the next time. as for the caches, both found and unfound caches are loaded from all the GPX files in the \GPX\ subdirectory. if you want to exclude/delete found caches, you either need to delete/update the GPX files you got from your pocket queries (where the PQ would then exclude found caches), or otherwise delete the individual GPX files for the found caches if you were loading them one by one ("send to GPS"). Awsome. That will make life much easier.
  22. I agree, i just bought the 450t and plan to return it for the 450. its not worth the extra 100. use that hundred and get the street navigator($100) or Birdseye($30).
  23. I started caching on the iPhone a few months ago and it is not as accurate as they say. It will not update unless you are moving. The say it gets you within 1-10ft but that is one a perfect day with no tree cover. I would say it is 10-50ft on average. When we are hunnting for caches on our favorite bike trails the iPhone will update well after we pass GZ. frustrating and that is why I picked up the Oregon 450t this week. I have also gotten lost looking for caches in the woods with my kids twice becasue the iPhone had no clue to my location. I have a regular compass but i still ended up a good distance from my car. I am no boyscout. Nothing beats the iPhone for paperless caching. Being able to update everything directly to goecaching.com while walking to the next cache is a huge time saver. Being able to pull up caches at any time without PQ's is unbeatable. I call it "Random acts of Caching". And to DFX comment about the iPhone users not admitting the phones limitations, I have not heard anyone saying it could hold a candle to a Garmin? The operating system for paperless caching is better but not the GPS. Just more Apple haters. Now i just have to learn how to use this garmin.
  24. I just picked up an Oregon 450t to replace my iPhone for caching had a few questions. There is not much information on the Geocache side of this unit. How do you delete the log files (or "Show Found") from the unit. I like to start with a clean slate so it is easier to see what we found that day and log them online. Or is there a way to auto upload your finds? Please remember that i am coming from an iPhone where everything could be done right in the field so im not sure what this Garmin is capable of. Its too bad that the GPS on the iPhone is so slow and crappy in tree cover.
