  1. I have been doing a lot of conversing with GPSGeek (a Garmin Dealer on Ebay that I have done a lot of business with) about this new upgrade, and he states that the only difference between v5 and v4 will be the map vendor. He also says that the old version will actually have better maps than the new one. Think of this also: new version + new map vendor = program bugs. For what its worth, I will stick with the old one until I hear any reviews or the likewise.
  2. I recently purchased a Legend after researching ALL of the mapping units including all Magellan brands. I actually got to try the Legend, Meridian, and Sportrax series before buying. My deciding factor for getting the Legend was the size factor, no difference in reception signal (even under tree cover), and ultimately more detailed maps on the Legend, IMHO.
  3. I also have been looking for the new version of Metroguide v5, and found it at: http://www.gpsworldsupply.com/gps_world_supply.php?step=productinfo&productNum=010-10468-00 for $95.00 It will not be released until sometime in May though.
  4. Just as everyone else is saying, Amazon had the cheapest price for the Legend, $199.99 with $50 Mail In Rebate. I got mine off Amazon just a few days ago for $179.99 with $50 MIR. HOW??? It requires some looking around on that site, or one of the online coupon sites (do a search on google.com for Amazon coupons), but I applied for a Platinum Amazon.com VISA with a fixed rate of 9.9% and got an additional $20 off (which is applied to your Amazon.com account) when purchasing with the card. It took me all of 5 minutes to complete. Total price for my new legend ---- 199.99 - $20 promotional - $50 MIR + Free Shipping = $129.99. Awesome deal if you ask me! Hope you get a good deal!
  5. I have a yellow etrex and have only had to upgrade the firmware once (June 2002) since I have had it and it showed no signs of a improvement over the previous firmware. Previous upgrades prior to this one seems to have made drastic improvements. If you go to www.garmin.com and check out the software downloads section, you can view the improvements each upgrade has given to the GPSr. Doing this can give you an idea of the various improvements made previously. Also, check ebay for the cables. I got mine off ebay from GPSGEEK a lot cheaper than the Garmin brand and they work great! Hope this helps!
  6. As one of the locationless cache "owners", I was distraught at what to do with these fake pics. Numerous people emailed me complaining of the pictures, but what is a cache owner to do? These people who notified me of the pictures requested that the logs be deleted, no more logs allowed by the cacher, etc. I, for one, am no great graphical whiz that can tell a fake from a real picture. In my eyes, it could be real, but closer looking showed it might not. Therefore it made it difficult for me to to decide the course of action (delete or not). On one hand, I can have the logs deleted, but rob a cacher of a find. On the other, I have cachers demanding action. What MrGigabyte did (or his "friend") made many people upset apparently (and put me in a tough spot). Am I mad? NO! Am I disappointed in the person? YES! Will I hold it against him? NO! I think the apology he offered was good enough, but he should also realize that he won't be trusted for a while and will be watched very closely. MrGigabyte--Play right & apology accepted.
  7. LOL, you guys are hilarious! Seriously though, I found the same holder at my WalMart here in NC, and absolutely love it! It is a lot better than the Garmin holder I had previously. The website for the company is: http://www.niteize.com/gps.html Bought mine while it was $14, would most certainly buy one for $5!!!!

  9. Firmware update is up, but it is not v. 2.12. It is v. 2.14!!! Yahhh!

  11. I know exactly where you are at then! Unfortunately, that is a pretty hefty drive for me, so unless I come up that way I probably won't be of much help. There are plenty of other cachers up that way though, and reading the forums and reading posts of caches should give you a lot of pointers. Also, just getting out and playing with the GPSr before setting off to find your first cache helps ALOT! That is how I learned and each time you go out, you learn something new. One more piece of advice too is to start with one star difficulty caches until you get comfortable with your unit. Hope this helps you a little!
  12. How far west in NC are we talking about? A group of us usually go out every weekend or two for some geocaches and wouldn't mind showing you the ropes. Also check for a local geocaching club (they are a great way to pick up pointers). If you are in Mecklenburg or a surrounding county, a meeting is going to take place on June 20 in Huntersville. Welcome to Geocaching!
  13. I'll second that! Have found a few already and when I go to get coordinates for a new benchmark to find, I've forgotten which ones I've already logged and found. I end up going through each until I find one I didn't log . That would be a great (and only) improvement I can think for Benchmark Caching.

  15. When you do get a GPSr, if it is a garmin, visit ebay.com and find GPSGeek. He doesn't sell GPS recievers but rather accessories to go with them. For my Etrex, I got the car power adapter/computer adapter combo for $25, garmin sells them for $50. Great service! He will have a site, but it's not up yet: www.gpsgeek.com
  16. After my last post, went and found the manufacturer's website that has a MUCH better desription and sells the holder I was talking about. The web address is: http://www.niteize.com/gps.html Hope you find a holder you like!
  17. I used to use the garmin brand case for my GPSr, but discovered I was constantly taking it out of the case to use (mostly so I could see the screen better). I eventually lost it, but that was actually for the better. When in WalMart one day found a case to carry the GPS in that was much, much better made, IMO, than the Garmin case. Found it in the sporting goods dept. Made of some kind of tough material, with a metal belt hook that can bend so you can prop the case up with GPS strapped in. You do have to take the GPS out to use it (but the case has elastic bands to hold it). Same price as Garmin brand, but I love this one so much better!
  18. Just as HawkEye mentioned, there are the three caches I placed in Statesville. Since you are coming from Memphis, I assume you will be traveling I40 and then getting on I77 in Statesville to head south to Lowe's MS. If that is the case, you will be passing by all three of my caches just before merging onto I77. Two are pretty much directly beside the interstate. The third is just within a couple miles of the others. Hope this helps you and happy geocaching! [This message was edited by FlyfishNC on May 11, 2002 at 07:45 PM.]
